I'm not a fan of glass enclosures full stop to be honest, that enclosure in the thumbnail was given to me brand new so I wasn't turning it down, planning on putting the mangrove snake in it eventually

I researched getting a tegu for over a year .I finally got my red tegu in May of this year 23 .She has cost me a bomb to set up and set up right .I've spent hrs and hrs trying to tame her down, and she's getting there but still going to take many hrs . Lucky I work from home, and I work in the room she's kept .Think hard and long before getting one .. But if you can do it ..They are amazing ..Thanks for the vid

Thank you, is your tegu young ? Mines doesn't really like her fruit and veg either, she has favourites that are always changing, she won't have any during brumation period just the odd bit of meat.

You mentioned cleaning the prolapsed area before massaging it back in. Do you use something specific to clean it or is it just the sugar water that they're soaking in?
@reptilerich956

I just quickly run a shallow luke warm bath put a spoon of sugar in it and massaged and cleaned it with my fingers back in.

So if she comes out during semi brumation to bask do you put the heat lamp on and offer food or just leave her to it ,and i ve heard that Argentian black and white haven't been bred in the uk is that true only red to black
@reptilerich956
@reptilerich956 2 жыл бұрын
Yes if she's out looking to bask ill turn her light on and let her, if it's brumation period and she's consistently looking to bask I'll offer her a cut up chicken breast to keep her going but only if she's consistently basking even if its for a few hours a day, as far as I'm aware black and whites have been in the UK a long time and they are being bred, I certainly know of some that are trying.

I can see where health would be a concern, if an animal was “captive born” vs “captive bred”… but why is behavior different? I’ve heard many people mention it, and I’ve never really understood. If both were born and kept in a captive environment, why does one act more “wild” than the other?
@reptilerich956
@reptilerich956 2 ай бұрын
It seems to me that the more generations an animal is bred away from the wild the more it "dilutes" their fear of people. I'm not sure about the science behind it but I do have my theories 😊

I'm looking at the moment..Do your research ,the only reason I say this is when looking, there are some many up for rehousing 😢..Only get one as these are a commitment..15/20 years plus ..I do have experience with large animals..
@reptilerich956

Research is key but at the same time I find you can over think it, I've seen people obsess over uv levels and perfect temperatures, humidity and so on wheras im quite a relaxed keeper, aslong as she has all the essentials and shes happy and healthy im happy, alot of the knowledge comes from experience itself, my best advice is have plenty of money set aside for any equipment breakages or vets bills you may need and you'll be ready to tackle any challenges that may arise.

@Reptile Rich Ye man .. I get that side .. I don't want to contradict myself. But for a large lizard, they're not the hardest to keep ..say that of a Chameleons. I don't think people realise how big and how much space they need ..
@reptilerich956
@reptilerich956 Жыл бұрын
Yes lizards need alot more space than similar sized snakes that's why I only have 1 big lizard, we're already bursting at the seams 😂

I'm getting a male tegu and the enclosure I'm making for it is that size 😭😭😭 you sure that's not fine?
@reptilerich956
@reptilerich956 Жыл бұрын
My rule of thumb with my lizards is that the lizard should be half the length of the enclosure and roughly the same depth, at the very least you could get maybe away with an 8ft long 4ft deep and 3ft high for a male but personally I'd go for a 10ft long because by the time you add hides and water bowls you're taking up alot of floor space
@Ai-xtra
@Ai-xtra Жыл бұрын
@@reptilerich956 would you say then that 3ft depth is not enough?
@reptilerich956
@reptilerich956 Жыл бұрын
@@Ai-xtra for a temporary viv it would be OK but as a permanent viv I would definitely go for atleast an 8x4, males are larger and chunkier than females and I wouldn't put my girl In any less than her 8x3.
