That slide on No Expectations is chilling. I think Brian became a casualty of his fame, partly because Mick and Keith became better musicians and songwriters, both naturally and out of necessity. Brian had relied on his natural ability for years, and once the lifestyle he was leading began affecting his ability to play, it was over. Fascinating story, and mystery for many years, which has pretty much been solved now, with a confession from his killer, and forensic recreations.

The problem with "I Wanna be Your Man" is the guitar solo is too short. I like the way it sounds as if Brian is winding up (baseball analogy) right before the solo. If the solo had gone 30 seconds longer, his guitar would be flamin'.

@@SR11266 Jones DID write songs - he was too shy to present them to the group. A more strident Jones would have demanded credit on those songs he played a major part in - The Last Time for example. He collaborated with Gene Clark on Eight Miles High. Gene thought he should have got a credit on that. Jones also worked with a certain Jimmy Page on a movie soundtrack. Regarding his death, the police completely bungled the investigation - hence the Brian Jones files are not available to the public to avoid embarrassment. I don’t agree with the murder theories though. Poor Brian does get a bad rap - certainly compared with Lennon and Hendrix, who were both flawed in their own ways.

For those who wants to know more about Brian Jones I recommend Paul Trynka’s excellent book about him. It’s pretty clear that Brian, not being here to give us his side of the story, have had his story told mainly by two guys who bullied him and pushed him into a corner. Two guys who still suffer from guilt and grudge when it came to what happened to him. Brian was as popular as Mick during his time in the band and was the one a lot of people came in contact with when their paths crossed the Stones. Hendrix befriended him, so did Bob Dylan, Gene Clark, Dick Taylor, George Harrison and Nico. He wasn’t the pure evil or constantly drunk/high person some Stones-fans seem to believe he was. He is a classic case of history is written by the winners.

You are greatly simplifying the evidence. Trynka's book goes into much details and draws from dozens of sources. It amazes me how these Brian Jones apologists continue to cover for Brian. Brians had deeply rooted problems going all the way back to grade school days, getting in trouble with girlfriends, becoming estranged from his embarrassed parents. If you are going to mention Trynka, then you should know the full story. Brian was always a deeply troubled person. Extremely talented, but very capricious and toxic. I liken him to the genius of Syd Barrett and Jim Morrison, all unhinged personalities deep down inside.

Back in the late 70's I read an article or book excerpt on the Stone's. It stated that Brian Jones was one of those people who could pick up virtually any instrument and play it. Especially string instruments. According to his sister, Jerry Lee Lewis was the same on piano. No lessons. He just naturally played from almost the moment he first touched the keys. I think some people just breathe music and experience it in colors and other ways us mere mortals don't. Makes things interesting. There are a lot of us Salieri's out here and very few Mozart's!
@robertshirley3422

I wouldn't exactly analogue Brian to Mozart..a bit of a stretch. He was one of those multi- instrumentalist that could add iconic colors and textures to songs, but maybe Brian would have been better suites as a studio musician ( a la The Wrecking Crew) or been a music engineer or producer. Because, HE WAS NOT a prolific songwriter, and for a band like The Stones, competing for popularity with The Beatles, Kinks, The Who and other British Invasion bands, I'm sure it became cut-thoat knockout, drag out. I really cannot think of any of the major bands that didn't have these battles over creativity. Look at the Forgerty Brothers in CCR and the battles within The Animals, Pink Floyd and The Who are legendary. Even the clean- cut Beatles, it got very nasty.

It is true that he could pick out a rudimentary melody on many instruments, that is not an extraordinary ability, by any means. Lot's of people can do that. But what he played was always someone else's melody. Jones was a copyist with no creative or inventive musical abilities whatsoever. He was surely no Mozart... in fact he never rose to the level of Salieri either. Jones could not write, he could not sing, he knew very little music theory and he NEVER composed a single song in his entire career. Jones was by far the least talented member of the Rolling Stones.

@williardbillmore5713
@williardbillmore5713 Жыл бұрын
The key to playing slide guitar in the No Expectations style is to visually make sure you slide up to the fret exactly over it and THEN only put a little vibrato on the notes as they fade away. The tendency for beginner slide players is to put too much vibrato on every part of every note played. It takes a good ear, some restraint and a lot of finesse to keep it sounding in tune with the other instruments. Although the part is super simple and you are only picking a few notes out of really just three chords you have to remind yourself that this is not a rhythm guitar part. It is an accompaniment... In some places when you don't play is every bit as important as when you do play.

Obviously he wasn’t a master of those instruments but he knew exactly what was needed and showed up with the goods To this day Keith Richards has almost nothing to say about Brian’s contributions and if he does say anything pisitive it’s always back handed. You are a guitar master, but your explanations are very simple… until i try to play, and it become suddenly much more difficult… 😀 and you are also a great pianist and a great singer. Whow ! 🙏🏻 I particularly appreciate your enthusiasm, you live the music you do, and it makes me want to play it ! I love this video on Brian Jones. Mick Taylor was a better guitarist, but these early Stones records had something special, and Brian had something to do with it. The Stones made a great version of red rooster, but I like also the London Session album, when the great Howling Wolf explains how to play it to Eric Clapton, Stevie Winwood, Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts (😢). I had it in mind when I tried to play it A big bravo to your channel from France 👏👏👏🤩🤩🤩

I really like all the guitarist you bring up. As a stones fan in younger years, I always thought of Brian didn't get the credits he deserved. But ofcourse he died at young age in the sixties and most of the stones fans of younger age, don't remember him. Other guitarist I like very much are also not well known or at least not high in the scorecards. Angus Young or Neil Young are two examples. Its nice if a guitarist like you analyse who the particular sound of a guitarist is made. I will retire in a couple of years move back to the Netherlands and I will start to take guitar lessons myself (on Texel ), people like you are inspiring and at the same time, because of your skills, let me realize that it will be a long road to get something out of the guitar that is coming from the inside. But I have already a chinese Fender in the room ;). Meanwhile I will stay tuned on your channel.

To the best of my knowledge, the one and only song that Brian sang the lead vocals was "walking the dog". Not really a great voice. But he took the stones of the sixties to the greatest heights with his astonishing mastery of so many instruments. Perhaps the Stones might never have made it to the title of the 'greatest rock band ' of all time...

"Beast mode?" That's all some basic Elmore James type playing. Beast Mode would be Duane Allman, Derek Trucks, Bonnie Raitt or George Harrison. There's not that much to this.

Ronnie is pretty accomplished to. He plays the saxaphone,Harmonica, piano , Banjo and Steal pedal. Plus his bass playing was very influential with the Jeff Beck group. Listen to his bass on shattered. Bill did not like it. Told Ronnie bass should be more bottom not like a guitar. Well I beg to differ.

Doesn't Keith claim to have learned the key of open G in the early 70s, yet his band mate, Brian played it on a few of their songs in the 60s.

Some tme ago I read that Brian could play something called contra melodies or something like that, and was so good that if you paid attention closely he was playing a different song altogether but if you took that away from the stones songs where he did it then the song was very different. I don't know if that's true.

@@randlemcmurphy2672 Well that claim that Jones was the very first in all of the UK to play slide guitar ... absurd and silly as it is , has been predominant among the saint Brian sect of lies that I have been trying to dispel since Trynka published his fictional book about Jones several years ago. The fanboys will read "One of the first" and then retell it as "the very first" so I have to be extra diligent with that riciulous fallacy.
