Loved the tips here. Something that i've found to be really helpful, especially when working with male clients is to use oil removing paper. So instead of adding make-up on someone's face, it's just removing the oils, causing the skin to look more flattering, in my opinion. I've found that a lot of male clients are very comfortable with this, rather than putting make-up on them.

Alright my guy. I've watched DOZENS (there aren't really many on KZbin) "comparisons" between a Pro-Mist filter on and off, and yours is the ONLY one that like... actually shows any difference worth noticing, and sold me on it. Thank you for that.

In Davinci Resolve dial back the mid tone detail (MD). This will soften pores and reduce blotchy skin tones. It may also be possible to make a selection of the skin tones and add a small amount of blur. I know this video is about lighting but a software approach may be useful in addition to soft lighting. Back when film was king the Pro - Mist filter was the go to for softening skin and adding a dreamy look.

Really helpful video Daniel.Another way of perfecting skin tone is not to use light coming above but more from the m camera direction.Also, especially for the rough skin a usage of primer on the face can improve the situation.It fills the gaps /wholesome in the skin and make it more even harsh light friendly.

Great tips Daniel! Will definitely pick up a Pro Mist filter - thanks for sharing! Fwiw, I've noticed the Neat Video plugin can also be used in non-noisy shots to smooth out skin tones a little bit when you set the sample area on a person's cheek for example. It's subtle, but the noise reduction algorithm thinks some of the variance in the skin is noise and tries to smooth it out a little bit. Haven't tested it out with the latest version of the plugin though.

Daniel, this is a very cool demo. You asked for suggestions - in the 1990s I used a Nikon Soft 1 filter for female portraits. I worked very, very well. I learned about it from Nancy Brown's book, Photographing People for Advertising - she used it in her photo shoots for Revlon and other elite clients. Maybe overkill for video except special cases where you really want a diffused beauty look. I don't think Nikon makes the Soft series anymore, but they may be available on Ebay.

@danielschiffer5 жыл бұрын
Yes definitely! I was shocked at the result it had when I used it to film my girlfriend. Because she wears makeup, on camera her skin tends to appear more oily and reflect more light- but with the BPM filter it pretty much removes that "shiny" look entirely!

Also avoiding oily skin helps neutralising the imperfections.Some people sweat a lot in camera cause there are nervous or just hot.Even if you dont have face powder you can ask them to absorb the sweat with a simple tissue and it improves the situation a lot!

I wrote these all down, I need ALL the help I can get...PS banana light falling made me NOOOOOOOO out loud. Drama! Funny pro tip, almost all commercial DP's put some sort of diffusion filter over their expensive cine lenses to crank DOWN the sharpness. Almost every DP I know uses one, it's for this reason a FEW of them use vintage SLR lenses converted to CINE so they don't have that stagnant technical sharpness they need to diffuse, because it's not a desired look by anybody, especially the talent. Brilliant video dude, as always.

Hey Daniel! I have learnt so much more in this video, than any other that I have painfully scrolled through for weeks! I have also just seen your video about cheaper camera products. So, I hope you can help? I am setting up a business for bio degradable glitter and I'm interested in buying a filter for my canon 200d, like the one you have mentioned in this video. However, I dont want to spend a £100 on it. So I was wondering if you could perhaps give me a link on a dupe? I'm doing everything myself and hoping to get everyday people to showcase my work, rather than models. So a subtle face filter would be good, without looking really blown out, but again for cheaper, if that possible. Thanks so so much xxx

Hi Daniel. Just a question regarding the distance between the light source and sheet diffusion. So how come the cake pan you did still had an amazing soft shadow although the sheet is really close to the LEDs? According to what you showed in this video the wider the distance between the diffusion and light source is, the softer the shadows are.

Question: Why to use a filter that softens the image when you use a high quality glass such as sigma art 50mm 1.4 ? Isn't the point to find the sharpest aperture to get maximum details? Couldn't we use different apertures or lower quality lenses to get similar result?
@suryagurung77934 жыл бұрын
the softness coming from that filter is way different from the softness that comes from an "out of focus" shot.
