I struggled with my guitar moving around no matter how I held it - I realised the problem wasn't my posture, but the wood of the guitar body was just really slippery. I put some non-slip material on my leg before I sat my guitar on it, and now I can rest my strumming arm on it naturally and it doesn't dip. The neck is only tilted about as high as yours is, so I still will probably get a strap to try that higher angle, but my wrist is able to hold a pretty natural position already. At some point I may buy some stuff to stick on the guitar, but for now, just that spongey stuff you get on a roll at the hardware store, that people line their caravan cupboards with - just a strip of that resting on my leg first worked wonders.

I’m a beginner. Thank you for your tips, it helps a lot. One can’t go ahead with practice alone, tips from a pro really matters. Loads of love and good health to you.

Nice tips. I've been playing for roughly 4 years, so I knew this stuff already :), but it's nice to see people freely share helpful information to a large community. Great work!

Thanks for this, as simple as it seems, if you are a beginner and no one has ever told you this, you just don't know if you're doing it properly. Taking the weight out of the left hand makes a lot of sense to me!

still moves. I feel like the first curve is too large to hold it on the leg and the actual bent between 2 curves is in the wrong spot. I either tend to raise my leg or want to hold it in a classical way on the left foot instead. so annoying to balance it. :((((

One question though- If we keep guitar upright, without any tilt. How will we see the fretboard? I am a beginner. I need to see the fret board to play chords.

I really need help. No matter what I do my right shoulder hurts like crazy. The body feels so thick and i can't reach forward and down enough with severely straining my shoulder. I can only play for about 20 minutes before the pain is too much. I see others can put there elbow in front of the body without much effort but it really hurts to even do that. My elbow rests on top by default. I'm fine on Ukelele, though I need a strap to hold it up. Is there just something severely wrong with my proportions? I can't find any info on this and I'd greatly appreciate some advice. When I try and do what he says with the crease it feels too far and hurts my shoulder.

Have you tried a smaller sized guitar? There are so many sizes and some might compromise some subtle differences, but to be comfortable is the key to enjoyment. Look at the size guitar Ed Sheeran plays.

Thank you for this video. I haven’t found any position where the guitar doesn’t move. I’m short 5’2” and i have a “regular” size, beautiful Martin acoustic guitar. I don’t want to buy another guitar. The best position so far is crossing my right leg over my left. 2nd best is my right leg on a stool. But I don’t want to strain my back or neck. Any suggestions appreciated!

Surely the first thing is to learn about basic seated posture with feet on ground and upper leg parallel to floor.

I use the classical position for holding the guitar. I find it's much better to support the guitar. You do need a foot rest for your left leg.

I get what you mean by not tilting the guitar, because it does hurt my shoulder and back after hunching over for a while. I'm a beginner and getting used to the cords and how to use my fingers, and my progression is much slower if I can't see the strings, so I struggle with not tilting the guitar.

I'm glad I looked further for a good guitarist, so far had watched a guy telling me to grip the fucking neck and I really don't know how I'm supposed to do bar chords with that, he didn't show of course...

So my issue is the guitar goes forward when I try to change chords which causes me to buzz and of course I get frustrated. It seems like the weight of my strumming arm makes it move forward. I’m about ready to get rid of the guitar and quit all together.

That works if you are in a sofa where your guitar can be supported. It does not in a stool. Your guitar will go down if you relax your right hand on it.
