I can tell you from industry experience that depending on the pipeline, your roto methods will change. I'm an experienced paint and roto artist at ILM, we have been using Silhouette to rotoscope, we also do our roto whilst taking into account motion blur, that's where the shutter speed and angle come in. We roto whilst making sure the hard edges are consistent or in some cases the soft edges land in the same place as the footage. A trick I've picked up for out of focus images is to use a temporary blur setting which you disable when exporting your mattes, we export only the hard matte afterward so that the compositor can control the softness themselves. Most of the VFX industry use Nuke for compositing and paintwork, we also use Nuke and Mocha to track in 2D and 3D to speed up our workflow, if we have a camera tracked shot, we can use that data in combination with geo, cards, tracking points and corner pins to enable us to export tracking data to use in silhouette. We give the compositor full control after the roto has been completed, we export the hard mattes with motion blur as well as provide the splines for use in Nuke. More often than not the hard mattes are all we need and a simple defocus node is more than sufficient enough to soften the roto in Nuke. The rule of thumb is that as long as your edges are consistent throughout the shot then you should not have any issues with the roto itself. Frame by frame is sometimes unavoidable however in cases such as very fast movements, just like Ryan says it's important to look at your shot to determine the best approach before starting. Creating multiple shapes at once and then moving them together also speeds up roto, when it comes to the type of roto to use, B-spines are the best because they have better control especially if someone else picks up your work afterward. Bezier tends to cause a lot more issues due to the way they control the shape.

Hey Ray-ray: an important clarification when you work with the Roto Brush tool is that you need to start in the beginning of your shoot. You can't start in the end of the clip (or in the middle) and move to the first frame (like you can do in Mocha)

Great tips, as usual. I've been rotoscoping for ages, but the tip about Mocha just opened a whole new world for me! I only use Mocha for tracking. Thanks.

When you said "I have a dead body hidden at my dinner party,' it reminded me of the scene in "Rocky Horror Picture Show." I got After Effects but have not used it yet. I will give it a try.
@EricLefebvrePhotography8 жыл бұрын
+5thElemnt I think it might be a reference to Rope. A Hitchcock movie where two guys kill of a classmate and hide the body in a chest that they use as a table for a dinner party. The movie is best known for it's faked long take that was achieved by hiding cuts mostly by filling the frame of the camera and doing a fade cut or hard cut while the frame was filled.
@The5thelemnt8 жыл бұрын
Eric Lefebvre I was wondering what he was talking about. I thought he was going to be uploading some mini-movie or something coming up. Rope with Hitchcock? I'll have to watch the movie and check out that scene and fade cut...maybe here on youtube.
@EricLefebvrePhotography8 жыл бұрын
5thElemnt the movie Birdman uses that same technique.l through the entire movie. For rope, the thing to remember is that it was shot using 10 minute film canisters. So every 10 minute the camera would pan into an object or person but sonce movie theatre reels were 20 minute long hitcock made the cuts at every 20 minute intervals an obvious cut. Its an interesting bit of cinema history. The set has some cool props as well like a miniature of the empire state building in the window. In a massive cyclorama.
@The5thelemnt8 жыл бұрын
Eric Lefebvre How funny, a friend just gave me the DVD Birdman to watch. I'll check it out tonight. That is really interesting about what they did in the Hitchcock movie. Now I'm even more curious to see the movie.

@AMAStudios8 жыл бұрын
Any bag from a grocery store would do fine.
@OscarMontezFilms8 жыл бұрын
+Jared StCyr AMA obviously does not have any equipment. It's very important to keep gear safe, clean, and protected. Filmmaking can be an expensive hobby. Better gear usually come with their own cases when purchased. When they don't (some lenses for example) buy a pelican case. It's the case I've seen most on professional sets. They are nice hard cases with foam on the inside you can remove to form any shape to fit any type of gear inside. Some even have wheels. Do NOT I repeat DO NOT transport any of your gear in a bag from the grocery story. Imagine seeing Ryan putting his L-Series glass and C-300 in a grocery store bag! Haha

I did some roto for shitty ads, and here are very few tips to save your ass: 1) use graphic tablet for roto instead of a mouse if you can. You will make masks faster, MUCH easier and more accurate. 2) nuke (you can use non-commercial for free) - is A LOT better for roto than AE. Give it a try, and you wont go back. Rotobrush is cool, but there are very few situations where it really helps. Mocha is cool, I use it's tracking data every day for parenting roto stuff. It saves years of monkey job.

@DudeinatorMC8 жыл бұрын
+brickfilm maker They make money based on views and clickthroughs. As far as I know, they'll get a small amount of money for someone seeing an ad, but a much larger amount if someone clicks through the ad and even buys some of what the ad is actually advertising.
