3 Tips For Stacking Overdrive And Distortion Pedals

Wampler Pedals

Wampler Pedals

Күн бұрын

This week I give you three easy tips to remember when stacking gain pedals, whether overdrive or distortion pedals.
When stacking 2 dirt pedals together, the key thing to remember is that the 2ndpedal in the chain dictates the overall tone of the stack.
Cranking the volume on the first pedal in the stack will not raise the volume, but will increase the clipping (gain) in the second pedal.
Using a pedal with plenty of EQ options can help better sculpt your dirt tones
Bonus tip: an overdrive into a distortion channel on amp or already driven amp is another form of stacking gain

i'd recommend to put the smaller pedals on top of the bigger ones, otherwise they might fall over (especially when you stack more than three pedals)

I have to say - the Pantheon is one of those pedals I NEVER consider taking off my board... I just love it as a mid gain sound by itself, or being pushed for a higher gain. But now I feel like an idiot because one of the few pedals I haven't tried in front of it is the Tumnus!

Imo this is what makes stacking fun- I can take some of the drive pedals I have that have fixed parameters and no eq and run them through a pedal that has EQ, contour, presence, etc.- and totally change the sound. In fact, I have a few drive pedals I was going to get rid of because I didn't care for the way they sounded- until I ran them through a pedal that had the controls I wanted- now they sound amazing. The Rat for instance, not really my cup of tea- too muffled sounding, but you hit it with a midrange boost and keep the dist. turned way down- sounds great. It does a lot for my clean tone as well because I have all that eq ability built into my signal chain- just turn the drive pedals on and kill the gain. The only issue I run into sometimes- too many pre-amps. It can get a little aggravating sometimes when you have 3-4 different EQs in the chain to try and tweak.

Thank you sir for making the Tumnus. It is an outstanding tone shaper. I have a Boss BD-2W running into the Tumnus, which then runs into a Fairfield Circuitry Barbershop Transparent OD. With such a set up I have the option of running gain into the Tumnus, or the Tumnus into the Barbershop. Believe it or not, the Tumnus sounds awesome set on a lower gain with the BD-2W running into it. Sounds glorious!... And of course, it sounds great stacked into the Barbershop. As you've made clear, it does focus the signal beautifully. Thanks again for all you do.

Thanks for sharing. I guess the Deluxe reverb amp is a valves/tubes amp, right? Do you use it always with overdrive/distortion pedals/circuits? Of course, the idea of solid state pedals/circuits is to work with valves maybe, but many people, me included, have only solid state amps. Have you tried distortion/overdrive pedals/circuits with solid state amps? Any suggestion for good sound in this situation? Thank you very much for your attention.

Best to place EQ after dirt pedals - any pedal placed further down the chain will impart more of its unique characteristics on whatever comes before. Same reason Brian is saying you could move the Tumnus after Pantheon if you want more of the tonal qualities/EQ of the Pantheon.

People think the Tumnus, Klon, Architect, Merman, etc. are transparent -- for those that do not know -- because of the way the drive / gain knob works. It is a dual gang pot, meaning it is essentially two pots in one (not a dual concentric knob). As you turn down the drive knob, the gain circuit is mixed out in favor of the clean signal. The drive portion of the signal is very mid range heavy, while the clean portion of the circuit is "transparent."
@scrummyvision

this is the most succinct description I've seen. I didn't know about the dual gang pot till I tried to build one. thank you.
@austinfailz
@austinfailz 6 ай бұрын
@@scrummyvision If memory serves, the circuits splits the signal into three sections: the 'clean' signal, the 'distortion/overdrive' signal (which is supposedly based on the DOD 250/MXR Dist+ circuit), and then the bass/low end is processed outside of that. The treble affects the signal and is patched in from the last opamp section. There is a Tube Screamer version from Maxon (more or less; the hard clipping overdrive section is a soft clipping Tube Screamer instead).

The klon is the most transparent clean boost ive ever heard. Not a transparent od but transparent clean boost. If you have an amp like a plexi or jcm800, the klon will give you more saturation (when used as a clean boost) but with very little colouration. I dont think its a very elegant circuit but its very utilitarian.

I wouldn't dream of telling you anything about how you should run pedals or stack drives, but for me personally I run my Tumnus Deluxe at the end of my drive chain rather than at the front. I run my Tumnus in a typical Klon mode with gain at about 10:00 and level at about 2:00, and let the Tumnus spread its buttery goodness all over everything else. And I leave my Tumnus on all the time unless I am just looking for super clean sparkly tone. In front of the Tumnus I have a custom Tube Screamer and a Boss SD2. When I want a lot of crunch I turn on the SD2 and when I want distortion I turn on the TS turned way up on the gain. And when I want nasty I turn on all 3. I think the Tumnus Deluxe EQ gives me the best tone control which is why I put it last in the chain, and then when I discovered I just like to leave it on all the time it made sense for me to leave it there. Of course, since I don't have a Pantheon my options are a little different than yours. Thanks for the video. You make great pedals and have a wonderful way of teaching to boot. And that you know who Tumnus is makes me especially happy. :)

I have tried it all switched them around in back n front of each other fiddle with the dials and cuts and boost. The sound is always unpleasant when mixed but they sound great alone so I can’t complain but I wish I could find the best way to get the best sound from each one combined. The alpha omicron is the problem it’s so extreme n brutal, it bullies all the frequencies and bends to its will . I did a lot of stacking pedals at one point and it made me think about what people call "tone" much differently than I did before and certainly moreso than people typically think of it. Tone is how you are manipulating the strings and guitar; the notes. The gear is dictating the voicing, which is different than tone in my opinion. I realized how much speakers influence voicing, as well as amps and pedals later in the chain. Things like pickups matter to some extent, but you'll see a bigger improvement in voicing from a speaker upgrade.

Brian, thank you for these videos. And also your 'nerd' videos. Its really helped me to understand the multiple ways to use distortion pedals. Also,not much on modulation, but still find it interesting

GREAT SOUNDS and GREAT VIDEO as usual... I have a Soverign and a Tumnus. Can you do a video with those 2 pedals... I also use a SoulPog and i cant decide what i wanna use or what i wanna have first or second or third in the chain. I get great tones with all but just curious i guess on the many variations and combinations with the pedals. I use a Mesa Boogie JP2C into a 1x12 open back cab and LOVE how all the pedals sound through the clean channel of the boogie. I see we got a new Whitfill Tele... She's PURTY. Sounds great also.

I totally appreciate that you used “tighter” to describe the overall tone that we get. That has help me heaps in looking for the tone I’m trying to hit.

If you add a tube screamer or similar pedal to an amps dirty channel it tightens up. Keep gain on amp and pedal fairly low though.

I like to stack my drive pedals from less gainy od to one with most gain distortion. It's that because, on a high gain stage I would like the character of the more gainy pedal, that's why I have it in the first place. From Wampler I use a Plextortion right on the end of my gain stage and it works fine for me

Please make a Tumnus into Euphoria pedal in the style of the Tom Quayle pedal. A Klon into a Dumble? Call it the Mythical Tone Generator lol

euphoria seems to me like the other way around. It was first created and then someone thinked it is Dumble style sound pedal and Brian did not minded ...

@@stanislavmigra No even Brian himself says when he designed the Euphoria (originally called the Ecstasy) he was going for a Dumble type sound. Watch his old video on the Euphoria.

@@travislee9662 really? I have to find it. For some reason I lived under impression, that Euphoria is just Brians take of touch responsive overdrive.

The sound I like best in this video is just the Pantheon by itself. The second best sound is the Tumnus by itself.
