Villains and antagonists are challenging to write due to their nuanced and complex nature. Over the past year, I've learned three helpful tactics for making them even more memorable and powerful.

These are some really great tips. Especially giving the antagonist or villain a real reason behind their goals beyond the protagonist as that not only makes it realistic and makes it seem like the protagonist gets in the way. Also I feel like the last one has been done really well before but I'm drawing a blank on what movie or show (it's gonna drive me crazy lol). Great tips! I never thought about doing number one so I'll have to try that

Great video and really great tips on creating your story’s villain. I hope, Lord willing, to start writing a story next year and I’m super excited about it!! Your videos have helped me a lot as I think about the kind of story God is moving me to write. Merry Christmas!!

But I am wondering is how do writers add all the guidelines that are taught to them when writing their books? Do they have a list and try to get them all as a right? Do they write first and then check and see which ones they have and which ones they're missing? Or are there specific ones that are go to guidelines and others that are not necessarily as important? The more I research the harder it seems when I am writing because I feel like I am missing a lot of steps. What advice do you have for that? Thank you for your video! It's been a while since you've been on here. Nice to have you back!

Great question! Not every guideline will make sense or fit within the parameters of a book. Rather, I see them as tools in a toolbox to use where the story calls for them. The most important aspects of a story are the main character's goal, fear, and misbelief. Most other factors are optional or "use as needed." Hope that helps!

First of all, I want to wish you and your family a merry Christmas. Glad that you're back. Great video! I think the villains are just as important as the protagonist. The more real they are, the better the story arc is. It's also a more accurate expression of how it is in life, in one way or another. Tips 1 and 3 really resonated with me the most. I think it's rather interesting to give characters certain shared traits or similar life paths. In the trilogy I'm planning, the MC and the villain are really more alike than is realized at first--even by the two of them. Both share a similar misbelief in worry of loss and hopelessness, but they ultimately diverge as one (the protagonist) goes to the Lord and the other does not (unfortunately, the villain doesn't turn around though the MC tries to help him). It shows how we have one of two roads to take in the end. It can be a very effective witnessing tool, I believe. I know I've been impacted by reading such stories.
