How can I make adjustment to a layer, whitout makeing it active. Lets say I have layer 1,2 and 3, and at the top I have the result layer. if I want to make adjustments to something on layer 2, i cannot do that unless I first make layer 2 active... but then when I make changes to it it also changes other layers for some reason.

Hey Marcus, what is the best workflow for loop recording to layers with midi and then merging selected layers. I wrote a piano part and recorded the upper register to layers and the bass register to layers. Now I want to merge a single bass layer with an upper register layer. Basically merging two midi layers into one midi track. Thanks in advance for any advice, and as always, thank you for the great vids.

Wow, talk about timing....i just finished recording sixteen bar audio layers; one midi clip triggering my Juno-60 and recording several different patches as the clip loops. Nice way of building up a body of audio loops for future work.

Really helpful tips! I’ve been trying to figure out something that keeps happening with layers... so if I have a huge stack of BGVs say like 16 or 30 and I copy and paste those 16 or 30 regions to a new layer and then bounce layer 2 to new audio files. Why is it if I move anything on layer 2.... like flying vocals and then go back to layer 1 to reference the original, the regions are all over the place and overlapping them selves? What am I not doing lol? My reason for doing this would be to keep a untouched version of the regions so I can tune and tighten with something like Revoice Pro or VocALion and always have the option to reference the original takes in their original position. Oh I forgot to say I mostly pack my BGVs in folders then start the process of organising and making new layers.

Ahhh yes - that would be the "Layers follow events" preference. If you open up the inspector - you will see this option directly under the "Layers" drop down menu.. Try de-selecting that, and let me know if it helps... (it's designed to make sure that all the "Layers" hidden underneath an audio region will move and follow edits that are done to the currently active Layer. Hope this helps, Cheers, M

How can I comp multitracked drums in a simple way? For example choose one fill from the take 1 (all 12 mics/tracks), then first verse from the take 2, then the chorus from take 7 etc. What is your workflow for stuff like that?

Use track groups to apply your copies, cuts and pastes. Usually if I'm comping something multitracked, I'll make arrange markers for my song, and make a group with all the tracks I'll be editing. With the group selected, make a new layer and name it "Comp". As long as the tracks are grouped when the layers are created and switched, all the tracks in the group will display the same take (layer). Once you find the section you like, copy and paste it to the "comp" layer you made after you created the group. If you have one take that's 90% good, and you need to take a fill or something, just copy and paste from one layer to the other with the tracks grouped 👍

It’s really so bad that you just can’t grab the events on the layers as usual to move them, cut them, trim them, fade them, melodyne them like what ever you want! In Pro Tools or Cubase you can “touch” the take events on playlists and edit them while you’re comping

This vid just shows some of the Layers options... Just depends how you would like to use Comp'ing. You can use the "touch" approach as well, just set it up.
