Workflow Tip: Transferring Your Studio One Song To Pro Tools (In Minutes)

For those in need of transferring the Studio One Song's over to Pro Tools | In this video, we take a Production created in Studio One - and open it up in Pro Tools (in Minutes), complete with All Audio Files (Original Edit's in tact), Track Names, Track Order, Tempo Map, and Markers.
(This can be achieved by using the AAF export format in Studio One 4.5+)

An excellent video but it needs 1 correction. When sending to Pro Tools (PT) do **NOT** select the option to "Split Stereo Files!" This creates more work for your PT collaborator and is especially time consuming if you have a lot of stereo tracks.

Is there a way to include Layers from Studio One in the AAF? I want to comp all the vocal takes in Pro Tools. Also, thank you for this video. I've been producing music for over a decade and had no idea about AAF files. Game changer for sharing mix files between DAW's.

Unfortunately, AAF doesn't support comping. I'd recommend transforming the layers into audio tracks, then placing them back on playlists in PT.

So if I understand the tempo midi track correctly I could use my ezdrummer midi track, drag it into an empty instrument track then use the process mentioned to use that track for it's tempo markers etc? I guess I'm confused by the part about dragging a midi track into a blank instrument track. Does this apply to any midi track? Is it because the tempo is written into the midi?

That is correct. You can basically use any midi track to pull the midi info into the blank instrument track as log as it continues throughout the whole song (that's my experience anyway).

I don’t understand the purpose of creating a blank midi track then dragging a midi track into it just so you can save marker arranger and tempo info. Won’t it do it automatically with the midi track already that was there? And is the “save as” .mid just saving that one midi track? So do you have to make sure you highlight or select that track? I guess I’m confused what Studio one is actually doing there. And why. I wish studio one some day will just give you a few check boxes and make all the operations that you had to do all in one render. Including creating a so called midi track just for markers etc... anyways thanks. Always fun to learn new things. :)

I take it opening AAF files doesn't work with Pro-Tools First? That wouldn't surprise me obviously but I was hoping it might do, unfortunately my exported AAF session just won't open in PTF but maybe I'm doing something wrong :/

Hey Natural. I'm using Studio One 5 Professional and the options are there. File >> Save As >> Select AAF in the dropdown menu at the bottom of the screen. Once that completes, it's ready to open in Pro Tools. One thing I noticed though, none of the plugins on any of the tracks imported so, for me anyway, I have to re-install and configure the plugins for all tracks. There has to be a way to get the plugins to move over as well. Also, when I followed the steps in this video, the tracks that pulled over are complete so, if you've trimmed tracks etc. in Studio One, you have to re-trim again in Pro Tools. I'm sure I'm missing something but, that's what I've got to work with for now.

I have Studio Artist 1 V 4 and I'm working on a PC. There is no option to save as an AAF. Why don't I have that option? This is driving a few of us crazy. I'm trying to get a project over to a friend who works on Pro Tools to mix and it seems next to impossible or so complicated it's embarrassing. It seems other DAW's like Reaper, for example, make it really easy to consolidate and send a complete project. We've all been watching videos, trying to do exactly what you guys are doing and then we hit a snag like this. There is no option to save as AAF.

Yep.. Pro Tools.. I know there is a lot of DAW wars out there, and my personal choice is Studio One, but that doesn't change the fact that Pro Tools is still very popular and if ever you do need to collaborate with another Producer , or facility that runs PT - This video should help. :) Thanks for watching! Dear Marcus Thanks for answering I was provoking ! I know PT is widely used in commercial studios in Europe. I enjoy your Studio One podcasts and I see them every week. I have learned a lot. I bought a studiolive 16.0.2 mixer in 2012 and started using S1 then. I am very happy with it and especially the latest version 4.5 has become very good with a lot of usefull features ( i also have Ableton , Sonar and Reason but I only use them as rewire slaves and Sonar I never use anymore) Keep up the good work !!
