Keep in mind that Starlink satellites still rely on ground stations (known as gateways) to send and receive data. Here’s a simple breakdown: when you use your phone or computer to access the internet via Starlink, your request first goes from your personal Starlink dish to a satellite. That satellite then communicates with a ground station, which processes the request (like loading a website or sending a message). The ground station sends the response back up to the satellite, which relays it down to your Starlink dish, finally delivering the content to your device. These ground stations function similarly to cell towers, though they connect with satellites instead of phones. While they are equipped with backup power for emergencies, they are still vulnerable, much like cell towers in a major disaster situation. Think of it as just another tool, but never put full trust in one system! Thanks for the awesome content!

Exactly. Most are located in major cities as well (Chicago for example) so quite possibly will go down before anything else. I've said this probably a 100x by now, invest in HAM radios. You can get the Baofeng cheap and if SHTF nobody will be turning you in for not having a license.

@@haroldbleemel8537 I have family that lives in WNC. I've seen how important Starlinks are for the situation happening there. While there was major destruction, it was very localized. The ground station for that area is all the way in Gaffney, SC, which was unaffected by the storm impacts.

Great video, thank you for putting it out. As a long-time IT person and mobile power / Starlink user I have some additions that I thought would be worth sharing. 1) The mini plans do support (allow) mobile in-motion use out of the box with no "hacks". 2) The mini uses far less power than the previous models. 3) The mini will run off USB-C directly and does not require an inverter or 120v A/C - a big plus when powering it in older vehicles or off grid situations. 4) Starlink will bypass local power/infrastructure outages as you describe BUT... 4a) It still depends on down link ground stations (that require power and that have some limits on their generator run time, just like cell towers). 4b) The ground stations also depend on a functional internet backbone to be useful. 4c) Most phone apps (like iMessage, phone-over-internet, etc.) require a working back-end infrastructure / data centers / internet backbone. The main point is that a widespread EMP/CME/Cyber Attack/Government Internet Shutdown (yes, they are prepared to do this) can seriously impact what you can do with Starlink. It's fantastic for local or regional emergencies as we have seen with NC/TN/FL but, as you note at the end, is not a replacement for truly independent comms like HAM radio. Cheers!

I was actually suprised he didnt mention HAM, i see it as a much more widely obtainable goal for the most people, a Baofeng is what, $20? Some places even program them for you for less than $100. A $75,000 camper is great, but definitely out of scope for the majority of us. Not his fault tho. High tier operators like Mike are used to having the newest and best available, sometimes lotech is the way..

One recommendation that I would make to the viewers is that if you choose to install a generator for the home, select one that runs on propane. Liquid fuels such as gasoline or diesel will age and go bad over time. Propane stays stable almost indefinitely.

Starlink mini is pretty solid. I carry it in my camping/overlanding rig as a means of communication/way do my college classes from remote areas. I was able to reduce its power consumption to about 25-35W per hour, so on a Jackery 500, which is a very small power supply, I'm able to power it for an average of 16 hours on a single charge. I don't leave it on all day, just turn it on to upload school documents or send/check some messages etc then power it down. Combined with a small solar panel I have the ability to operate it indefinitely so long as I have a full day of sun at least once every week or two depending on how much I need to use it. I do want to upgrade my power supply and solar panels to be able to go longer or power more items, but as far as the Starlink Mini, its been great

If you have nothing prepared and money is tight, fill your vehicle gas tank and keep them full as best you can (ALL of them) and store some fresh clean filtered water in juice or other food grade containers after sanitizing them. If you have a propane BBQ grill, top off your tank (If you only have one) where they refill by the pound. Energy will be the first thing that the unprepared will be in line for. What Mike says to have costs money, BUT YOU can do the basics for almost free (because you would have done it sooner or later) and be "prepared." Love these videos Mike. Regarding using a vehicle inverter: for manufacturer installed inverters obviously don't go over the rated capacity. If using your own inverter, don't be tempted to run a high power inverter without checking the wire gauge connected to your cig outlet. For simplicity, if it's 10 awg wire rated at 30 amps you can safely run about 360 watts. You can easily start a fire if you're not careful.

Here is something about food storage that most people do not consider. Clearly label the expiration date, leaving the original expiration date visible. Check your storage on a regular basis or make a simple chart so that you know when things are about to expire. Don't let food go to waste! Take that food that is going to expire and donate it to a food bank, church, or some organization. There are hungry people near you and things do happen as we all know. If you can, get a receipt. And then write that donation off on your taxes. If you are donating to a specific organization on a regular basis, build up a good relationship.

I could be mistaken, but I believe that Starlink still relies on base stations on the ground. And even if it doesn't the internet itself requires hubs and servers that may or may not have access to auxiliary power. So for a power grid down situation you would still be better off with ham radio. EMP, none of it will work. We would need to train pigeons again.

@deepbludude4697 There's places on the internet where you can buy fishmox, and bird antib. though they've become less and less here lately. I'd say 90% of the "animal" antib that I've bought are the exact same as human meds. Same color, shape, and numbers... they most certainly have to come from the same factories. Sulphameth/Trimethoprim, Cephalexin Clindomyac8n, Amoxicillan, Doxycycline are all available. I even got test straps to test urine for UTI's as my daughter had a surgery that made her more susceptible to them. If you can by all means, go to a Dr, but having this stuff around just incase is such a good idea. An infection from a cut can be life threatening if there's no medical help available. There's also a great book called Altons Antibiotics and Infectious Disease by, Joseph Alton MD and Amy Alton ARNP. It's the layman's guide to available antibacterials in Austere settings. It tells dosages, symptoms and lots of other things, for when a Dr isn't available. It can be found on Amazon.

If you're mobile, those solar generators are fine little systems. If you're talking about powering your house, I'd suggest something larger. A "solar generator" is a mini transportable version of a fixed whole house solar system. Same components, but able to sustain higher wattages for long periods. Here's what you need... Solar panels, charge controller, batteries, inverter, 10g wire, solar breakers. I'm off-grid out in the wilderness and have found that all I need to run my home is 600w 10a keeping 8 12v deep cycle batteries charged. Keep in mind, whether you're running 12v, 24v, or 48v, all of your equipment must be designed for those voltages and amps. My system is 4 times the capacity of a store bought solar generator at about the same cost. You can diy this (it's not difficult) if you want to get a little more tricky, you can setup panels facing east and west instead of south (you'll pick up an average of 6 more hours of sun per day)

HAM RADIO/ BEOFANG for comms. Water 3 gallons per person per day. Get water purification tablets. Food 700 lbs per person per year of a balance of nutrients and protein. Min 50 loaded magazines per rifle. Food stocks should be of foods that you currently eat now plus the staples like rice, beans, wheat berries, Celtic salt, sugar, powdered milk. Trash bags, chlorine tablets, rubber gloves, shovels. Etc.

Bro, I love ya but you're lacking in technical skills. First off, don't run an inverter off a 12V plug. Those plugs are rated for around 10 amps max, so you're talking 120-150 watts max. Anything more you'll pop fuses/burn wires. If you're going to leave your vehicle running and wasting gas, might as well get a 2000-3000 watt inverter and tap it into battery directly, that way you can power other things if you need to at the same time, i.e. a refrigerator. Second, just get a solar generator (I built my own) to power your modem/router. Why waste gas and create noise just to power a modem/router? Dumb idea. I built my own solar generators out of 50 cal ammo cans and I use those to power my modem/router in case of outage. You can get a 50AH Lithium Battery from Amazon and a 300 Watt pure sinewave inverter for super cheap. Use that to power small things like modem/router. No noise and no wasted gas/noise. In my opinion, if its a true SHTF situation that lasts for weeks or more, the last thing you want is to bring attention to yourself by running a generator. Solar generator all the way. Just my 2 cents. God Bless

Stuff like this is not complicated. Battery has a + & -. Inverter has the same. Connect with red (+) and black wire. Inverter has outlets on it. Plug something in. Add a battery box from autozone. Add a solar panel from Menards, some come with charge controllers, just basically stack all the +, stack all the - with the previous ones. Radios are generally 12v. May not even need an inverter in the works.

@thewiredfox2691 more inaccurate information. A radio maybe, but Mike had commented about running components off the vehicle, it's not about +/- is about Amps/Watts, not volts no matter if it's AC or DC if you cannot support the Watts/Amps, you cannot run it without blowing a fuse/breaker, things must be sized correctly, this is why many office buildings tell all the women to get rid of thier space heaters, the electrical outlets are only rated for 15 and in some rare cases 20 Amps, not every outlet is on its own breaker, commonly sharing a "home run" that is sized to allow for the longest run of wire and the common applied load on said circuits, when you run, and yes you can the applied load too long it heats up the wire, melting the insulation around the wire, and this is what causes common home/building electrical fires, said wire loses what protect the electrical current (amps) from touching combustible surfaces, amps=heat, that's what trips the breaker, you can see this in practice with a thermal imager and add load to the circuit (plugging stuff in and running it) and watch the temperature of the breaker increase. Now mind you, this does not mean the heat at the breaker is the same at the outlet, given load/condition of the device on the outlet, that heat could be alot more where it's plugged in, also bear in mind as you heat up the wire it expands and contracts when cooled, this loosens the terminals at the outlet and breaker, it's not uncommon for an electrician to come in for a service call and go to your panel and start tightening lugs, and if they're not, that's questionable. Long winded answer over, Simply put, just because it can take a plug, doesn't mean you can run stuff on it.

also having a "community meet" at your house is a great idea. Because those "strangers" that come are going to be the people who WANT to get to know you. People nowdays don't just randomly go to some dudes community meet unless they really, really want to. They have to be willing to overcome the "this is a pretty sketchy idea to go to this dudes house" themselves.

We live off grid full the time at 6,300 feet in elevation. We have 42, 300 watt solar panels. They face different locations so anytime the sun is up, we are making power. We have two large sine wave inverters. Batteries store all your energy. Do not get cheap Chinese Batteries. The best batteries are Battle Born batteries made in Reno Nevada. If you have some decent Sun, you will seldom need your Generator if you have a lot of solar panels.

Lithium Batteries are a God send after using Lead Acid batteries. No more holes in my Levis. There are a few things you need to know about Lithium Batteries. Lithium Batteries need to be kept somewhat warm. The batteries need to be kept in a box that is insulated. The top of the line Batteries from Battle Born will automatically take care of the the batteries. I use two layers 2" foam board in the whole box. When you get your new batteries your batteries will may be a little low. You need to top off the batteries with a small charger. After that you will never have to do it again. Another plus is that Lithium batteries can take the batteries down to zero and not hurt the batteries at all.

Starlink only works if the ground station has power also. Just face it no power will affect both receiving and transmitting. Probably the best option is ham radio in simplex but that has limitations in range due to atmosphere bounce and weather.

Those 1 quart Clasico Spaghetti Sauce Jars from CostCo work great for canning as well. Fill then with water after you wash them out to store extra water. Then when you get ready for canning food from your garden dump the water out, or use it in your canning process. The only reason say fill them with water is empty jars on the shelf waiting for canning is a wasted opportunity.

Ive been “saving” money and purchasing precious metals. The dollar might be somewhat strong now but if things continue the way they have been, the dollar is living on borrowed time. Either way, gold, silver maintain value and as most of you know they’ve been increasing in value quite a bit lately. I also recommend guns and ammo even if it’s just a .22LR, a Ruger 10/22 is a great example and is good for hunting small game and self defense an AR would be better but isn’t a necessity. Also if you do buy precious metals I recommend buying “junk” or constitutional silver and or fractional gold, ie 1/10 Troy ounce gold eagles.
@AnMi-o3x
@AnMi-o3x Ай бұрын
Good advice. Junk silver will be great for bartering especially the dimes and quarters. I think the worth of each piece of silver/gold will be very subjective depending on how much each party thinks it's worth rather than what we pay in dollars now
Trump will win and here’s why
