I have been on a weight loss journey for the past 7 years. I have lost almost 130lbs now. I only recently (in the last week) started rowing as running on the treadmill was really effecting my knees. The accountability and having a group to support you is one of the most important things. Going on a long weight loss journey, alot of it is a mental game (yes, diet, caloric deficit and being active are also huge factors). All it takes is a couple of slip ups to get you totally off track. Having at least one person to hold you accountable changes all of that. The slip ups end up making you want to work harder to make up for it. I am working on making rowing a big part of my working out. I have been enjoying it so far, and feels great.

I'm so glad I found Dark Horse Rowing! I'm 65 years old, and I have been doing Shane's 20 min. beginers with drills for two weeks, 5 days a week. I have also added dumbbell workouts before each row. Thanks so much!!

IMHO, the best motivational vid that you have done (and I've seen many of yours) regarding the beginner's journey with the rowing machine! I am an obese, T2 diabetic, 70 y.o. who's had a machine for 2 years with little use EXCEPT for the past 6 weeks following your prescribed weekly initiation. I keep coming back to this and I thank you for your concise, and enthusiastic effort! Kudos!

Just got started with rowing a few weeks ago. Been on a weight loss journey since March of last year. I've lost weight and now I'm getting back to the gym after some injuries and family set backs. Thank you for your amazing videos!

Thank you for this video, 2 years on. I’m currently fighting myself for adding and modifying my diet and still catching my brain condemning myself for failing at times by not eating right, or “backsliding” to old food habits. I am slowly learning to think about progress being slow and not an immediately visible change.

I am so excited to be learning how to better plan for my own long-term health. Since I started rowing a couple of months ago, I have lost 8 pounds and started toning my arms, shoulders, hips and butt. Still focused on mechanics, but my stroke is starting to feel somewhat normal, and I have tried the occasional intermediate workout. I'm so grateful for your coaching and support, Shane!

I love the advice of 'everything in moderation' - I feel like too many diets are about cutting things out completely, but just like you said, this can backfire and often leave people unmotivated and disheartened.

So true! I've seen it happen so many times and yet there's no need to push back when you only add good things and never "take away" the bad.

Hey Shane, I’m stepping back into rowing . I was a rower in college (absolutely loved it) and after college pick up concept2 to continue keeping in shape. So I’ve been doing it often on for over 40 years. But the last couple of years, due to unforeseen events I’ve let my exercise fall to the wayside. Now I need to step back into it in order to lose 40 pounds in a gained. Since I was a former fitness trainer I know to start slow and work my way up as you’re telling fellow subscribers in the video. It’s nice to have your series two guide me back in the right direction. Your videos have gotten me excited about rowing again. Thank you for that. Keep up the great videos.

Prefect advice. Easy workouts with increasing times on the machine. Enjoying the machine with good form should be priority.

I started with tracking calories, now track micros and macros. Once I got this down (took about 2 months), I bought a rower and now, with DH videos, I’m learning to use it correctly and it feels great. Slow and steady wins the race in weight loss! Building healthy habits that fit my lifestyle overtime has been more effective than losing quickly. Don’t “diet,” change your diet for the long term!

My husband and I have both lost 30 lbs each by cooking and eating healthier: more fruits and vegetables, lean meats, good fats and whole grains. We are eating delicious food which cuts down on the feeling of depravation. The rowing machine has been the perfect cardio addition to my exercise routine, low impact and full body workout. It is also a great stress reliever as it requires my mind's full attention to maintain the proper stroke. I really enjoy your videos and advice!

Shane, great overview video. I’m a huge believer in everything in moderation, including moderation. I see rowing as a way to improve my fitness. And with improved fitness, comes weight loss. If you combine with eating healthy, that speeds the weight loss. Also combining rowing with a second exercise, in my case, cycling, helps keep things fresh and flexible. Nice weather -> Ride. Less time or bad weather -> Row. Love this content. Thank you!

It's not just eating better foods, it's also eating at regular intervals during the day. For all of my adult life I rarely ate anything during the morning or early afternoon, and would then binge eat from about 4pm on. For the past 7 months, I have changed that - and on a very strict and disciplined time line. No junk or processed foods, more raw fresh vegetables (sorry, not big on fruits). I picked up a used rower 5 months ago to try, and now I am on it every morning, rowing along to your videos. So far, I'm 30 pounds down, have added muscle (!), and lost 2 pant sizes.

I just saw this. Its damn motivating me. I just started rowing last week after covid restrictions lifted and gym reopened in Melbourne. I lost my shape and put 10kgs on after about 19 months of lockdown here. I wanna kill my depression and stress after all of this shit happened and start the journey all over again. I wanna get my abs and guns again. First of, lets try rowing to kill 10 kgs 🤩. Thanks for this awesome vid.

What I learned during my weight loss journey is that apart from the people closest to me, nobody gives a shit that you've lost weight. Since I started eating healthy and exercising regularly my body has transformed, not just the weight loss but my posture has improved and my muscles show and NOBODY outside my close circle has even mentioned it. It's hard when you go through rough patches when you feel tired, unmotivated and you look in the mirror only to see that you look pretty much the same as you did three weeks ago. And during that phase nobody cares weather you’re shredded or obese. But it is just a phase, and you have to just keep going, and going, if not for others then do it for yourself. As long as you feel the benefits then that's all that matters. Fuck weather your boss notices!

I like to row on the concept rower , but in the gym , now the gym has changed the rowers . And it uses the matrix rower . Is the matrix also good , I liked the smoothness of the concept , the matrix is not that smooth.

Don't let my anecdote color your experience negatively. I would also defer to any answer from our host, as he is undoubtedly more knowledgeable. However, in my experience, after rowing for 4 years almost 5 days a week in some warmup or 5k capacity at my local YMCA on a very poorly maintained and beat up C2 Model D machine, I had no problems. The first time I used a magnetic resistance Matrix rower at my last gym I absolutely hated everything about it. Even at the lowest setting, it feels too sticky - like you're at a 20 on the damper on a C2. Just a gross feeling and something I could never log any meters with. Also something about their handle and that super janky loop attachment method, it would always shift to one side and perturb me to no end. Incidentally, never in my life had my wrists hurt from rowing, but at that time I could bench 295 for a single and 5 minutes on the Matrix would kill my wrists. Garbage machines. Stick with C2. I just got a new one. Worth the wait.

So I’ve been rowing for 2 years now with 16-25 hours of work per week and I know I don’t eat a lot (max-3000cal/day) I’m 16 and I haven’t really gained any weight or lost any weight. Neither have I lost fat. Idk what’s up. Anyone?
@skystephens56534 жыл бұрын
Your calorie intake might be too high or just not best composed - proteins, carbs, fats, etc. If your concerned talk with a health care provider to determine how to best meet your weight goals.

Hari Jo, a conversation this deep deserves a full dive with someone qualified to answer. I'd advise against taking any internet feedback to heart too much as every situation is unique and so many factors go into body composition and performance it would be impossible with this info to give you an honest answer.

Consider intermittent fasting with your weight loss too, dr jason fung is very good at explaining it, i've bought some of his books. Even elite athletes can improve their performance by training in a fasted state, its a very interesting subject.

Again, just one way of doing it. For some it works, for others it doesn't feel right. All that matters is something settles and feels comfortable for you.

On the subject of cutting the fat, this video really didn't need to be 20 minutes. DH videos consistently have trouble getting to the point.
