I had a strong hatred for spiders until a year before. Just seeing them ran chills down my spine. Always imagined about things like: what happens if they jumped on me ? What if they bit me ? I thought spiders were the worst creatures. Now idk what happened with me, I don't hate them anymore. May be I wasn't phobic towards them in the first place. Oh btw, Now I hate scorpions.

for me, my conflict aversion won over the fear of spiders. when i was living with my parents i would never go near a spider and had them get rid of them. once i started living in student dorms it felt too awkward to ask roommantes to get rid of spiders so i started doing it on my own. after all this time i still wouldn't want to be touched by one, but now i'm perfectly capable of remaining calm when i see one and removing it without much issue

I almost pissed in front of the entire school for holding it in too long due to a school ceremony when I was 14. I asked the teacher to go to the toilet several times but she didn't allow me to. I panicked, I was shaking and my mind felt numb. The words from the speaker echoed in the large hall. I was sitting in the front row of the hall right in front of the speaker. Finally I couldn't hold it much longer and got up while the principal was giving the closing speech, with the whole school staring at me and ran through the long hallway. Everyone was looking at me confused. I started fearing the thought of holding in urine. I had to go to the toilet between each class (45min per class). It was a huge problem in exams which often lasted 2 hours or more. Thankfully, I got better and was able to keep these feelings in check most of the time. However, I will still panic if I ever experience a situation where I wanted to piss but could not. I think the fear of 'what if' made the situation worse than if it actually happened.

It happened to one of my trainee too. We were building a project for a test run, and he asked me if he could go to the bathroom. He was shaking visibly. I said, yeah, sure, are you ok? Then he told me of similar traumatic experience. I'm not a therapist, all I could do was to feel bad for the situation he was into, and say him that he should feel free go to the bathroom, without having to ask, whenever he needed, and take all the time he needed. Again, I'm no therapist, but I saw him much better by the end of the internship. ...and for the record, we went thru all the tasks no matter how many time he had to go to the bathroom.

Arachnophobia. In kindergarden a teacher told us that all spiders are killing humans, I feared spiders for over 9 years than i had enough and started learning everything i could find about them. It took around 4 years that i was not afraid of every little spider anymore. Now i even can hold them as long as they are not to big. Und Jumping Spiders look even quite cute in a spooky way.

I used to hate n scared of fish due to several reasons: 1. I had a fishbone stuck in my throat 3 times. The last one I had to see a doctor to remove it coz it was very deep and I had burning sensation. After that, I stopped eating fish for years. 2. When I was very young, my siblings n I bought small fish but we didn't know how to pet them. They died n noone wanna clean the fish bowl, until couple days later we threw the dead fish + water to sewage. The moment we poured the water out, the rotten fish literally opened up and become disfigured. 3. We had a biology experiment during highschool class which we put a fish into a detergent n water solution. Blood soon coming out from the gill and the poor thing died suffering eventually. 4. Another biology experiment, we cut open a fish while it's still alive (we put chloroformed cloth on its head), and while we were observing the anatomy, it suddenly jumped up and down. WTF. When it's finally dead, a friend poked the eye with needle and rotated it like 360°. It really traumatized me for years. I couldnt even stand the sight of fish after all of that. And in uni life, when I had to learn how to cut n gut a fish, I got panic attack, I felt like I was flying, I felt wanna cry and faint. Lucky a friend helped me handle my fish. But here I am, 12 years later, having my own family and kids, I gradually get over my fear coz the feeling of wanting to give them healthy food variation outweigh my fear 😄

Until recently, I had a nasty stage fright. Even standing up in front of a couple friends made me visibly and audibly shake. Everyone said to fake confidence, but I wasn't able to for some reason. Until, at my most recent course-required presentation, I got desperate and decided to pretend I was smug, like I had some sly secret knowledge that those I was presenting to didn't (which was technically true, I was doing a presentation after all). It actually worked! I stopped shaking while on stage, and was still nervous but considerably calmer than I'd ever been in front of an audience. Plus, to most observers, confidence and smugness look identical! I'm going to keep practicing this and seeing if I can refine the technique, 10/10 would recommend to anyone else struggling with stage fright!

I carried a social fear for a long time. "The worst-case scenario happening every time.", they were admittely invasive thoughts I let speak for me. Soon I intentionally provoked them, antagonised myself with them, just kept thinking about every horrible social screw up I could do. At some point, charisma became easy, I got over myself. Cause at the end of the day, I talked to people, and the hardest part of it all was realising how much I feared the thought of something horrible happening rather than it actually occuring. Silver-lining though, learned I had developed a vivid imagination throughout the entire thing. Fun stuff really.

I share the same phobia and I know that one solution is hypnosis or auto-hypnosis which is basically convincing your brain that what you are afraid of is not as important/ as big/ as scary than you initially thought. The trick is to discredit your fear by analyzing what scares you (is it the feeling, the word, the object in itself, a bad experience?) and by doing so you give less power to that fear and it no longer seems overwelming! Hope that helps eventhough I know it's easier said than done :)

I used to be very scared of thunder but not lightning, partly because one time a large hurricane tore down or chimney and my mom woke me from sleep, panicked and rushed me to a safe place. From then on I was scared. Until one day I was sick, to the point it altered my thinking (I think it was a fever) and I decided to sit outside on the porch while a massive thunderstorm raged about. But I wasn’t afraid. It was weird. Since then, I’ve stopped being scared of thunderstorm.

I know this is going to sound really weird and nobody will believe me, but I think I have a sort of phobia with buttons too! My family laughed at me when I mentioned it, but I remember it started when my mum had a big aqua blue vase (with a 'stem' apparently, called a Pedestal bowl) which was full of all sewing stuff like old buttons and bits of material. It stank and I really really hated the smell. I hated it when she got that bowl out, and it had all these disgusting buttons in it, all just different shapes and sizes, nothing uniform, and all little bits of thread everywhere. Ever since, buttons, on their own and loose, sort of make me feel sick. I can say I probably don't like thread either, and sewing reminds me of that smell also. I can handle buttons on a shirt or something, but if they come off, it just seems disgusting. It's not as though I can't handle it, but I way prefer to keep away from them. The other weird thing is that I distinctly remember in about grade 2, when we had to cut and stick material on some pages in our books at school to sort of 'colour in' some pictures, I thought for the first about texture. I remember it being real revelation to me that I had never thought of texture before. Maybe because I had always avoided that stinky material in mums vase. So it's really weird that I've come across this story, it's not just me! And it's really interesting that this boy also didn't like the smell of them. Perhaps that bowl that spilled on him had the same smell. I think if mum spilled that bowl on me I would be worse than him! The only other thing I can think of is that I'm a bit of perfectionist sometimes, and I like things to be neat and tidy, so maybe all that chaos in that bowl had something to do with it, not sure. Sorry, just adding one more thing. I can smell that smell in my nostrils as I re-read what I wrote. It's really hard to remember a smell that you don't have in front of you, but that button smell, my God, I can smell it now.

Flying insects. I was afraid of Flying insects and the sound of them would freak me out, if the insect didn't make a sound, I wasn’t scared. But if they did, I went bonkers, even if it wasn't anything that could hurt me. This actually helped me save a family member and me from a hornet swarm once, but besides that it was pretty intrusive. I remembered where the fear came from super vividly since the memory was made, and suspected one lead to another, but I didn't confront it yet. I first made peace with the insects that didn't pose a remote threat, and one thing lead to another. I'm not even scared of any insect anymore, flying or not. Funny thing: the original cause was a queen wasp, but even so I have never been stung by anything in my life... not even by that intimidating queen.

I have a phobia of moths and butterflies. It's darkly amusing because beetles and most other bugs don't freak me out (while other people get freaked out), but butterflies, that most people admire, have me flinching and running off in a most undignified nanner. If a large-ish flying creature enters through the window at night, I remain perfectly calm if I identify it as a bat. If I identify it as a moth, I'm fleeing the scene and locking myself in a safe place.

I wish I could remember the study but it showed that desensitizing therapy was horrible for 'things' phobia like spiders, dogs, rats, etc. But it worked very well for situational phobias like talking to new people, being in stadiums, being at heights. To me, this made sense. Being at the top of a tall building is something we can control, i.e., the building won't move and is a predictable situation. With an animal or thing, you are not in control of how it can or supposedly can behave.

Mine was spiders. As a kid i would be deeply afraid of them and run from the sight of one. Today i have a bit more bravery to the point i can probably kill one, but it also depends on the size of the spider. Just the way they move, their hairy bodies, the twitchy movements, possibility of being poisonous, also their webs and everything just horrify and disgust me. Its like spiders are an alien creature meant to act completely different from everything else and can inflict pain and misery. Ghost feelings also do not help. Whenever i see or hear about spiders, that creepy crawly feeling as though something is mocing on your bosy just worsens it

Question: if a "phobia" is defined as an "excessive fear of a seemingly harmless thing", why is the fear of heights (Acrophobia) or fear of deep bodies of water (Thalassophobia) considered a phobia even though falling or breathing water for longer than five seconds can be deadly? i personally just recently developed a fear of height for some reason and i can only speculate why. I'm curious though.

I have a phobia that triggers when i hear a phone ring. I noticed its only when i know its a phone and when i feel responsible to pick it up, so it doesnt happen when someone elses phone rings and it doesnt happen when my alarm suddenly comes on because i know its not a call. I never actually got over it, it is still there however i have discovered a way to function regardless of it, even though the phone call startles me still if i pick up the phone and answer without thinking anything about phones it doesnt get exaserbated and this has been reliably tested by me, in other words its the knowledge of an immediate call to answer a phone call and what that means to me that the fear is about for me, its not the ringtone or the phone itself, its tied to the objectification and thoughts of answering a phone call. Odd i know but there is a big difference between the two. Ive never been able to relieve myself of the actual fear though, its still close in strength to what it was when i was 14 and so even avoidance and exposure havnt changed it, would love to hear some peoples success stories though. I have a severe enough arachnophobia that seeing a detailed picture of a spider, crab, or similar animal sends a shiver down my spine. I think it started with my mother freaking out any time there was a spider in the house, and I inherited that, seeing spiders as something scary. It's less severe now, but how would I get rid of it completly?

I think i have something with water , i hate showers and can't find joy in swimming . I go to swimming classes but I'm obviously behind compared to others . I'm not really sure what's that supposed to be , but it may be linked with a traumatic experience or multiple ones 🤷‍♀️

I freak out at rubber balloons filled with air. Water balloons and Mylar balloons are more tolerable. It's because when I was in highschool, a teacher snuck up behind me and popped a balloon right next to my left ear. I think what he did might be illegal.

I don't know why or what triggered but I have extreme thalassophobia.....fear of deep waters. Just a picture of dark water or shark is enough to stop my breath. I never had a bad experience in water....and I quite enjoy swimming.....but any videos or photos literally just freak me out so much.

I have the common fear of heights. I get serious pain in the soles of my feet just from watching high places on TV, so does one of my sisters. It can be as intense as someone smacking the bottom of my feet with something hard, like a ruler. I developed this phobia after my 20s but as a kid I climbed everywhere and anything. But I have self treated it by looking over all edges I can find like stairs, rock cliffs, flewn in small airplanes with many landings and take offs, done parkour, wall climbing etc. It has helped a lot but I am still cautious of heights.

I am so scared of spiders it physically hurts my body to see one, even a picture of one. I ran out of the theater during Harry Potter when the giant spider popped up (I didn’t read the books). I’m a combat veteran, I’ve owned a scorpion and lizard, I play with snakes, cant even look at a jumping spider.

I have a very strong reaction of disgust when I see a rat. This feeling of disgust is multiplied when a rat touches me (happened to me last year) or if I see one of their corpses (I enter in a state of shock). Can we call this a phobia? If so, a phobia of what exactly?

When i was Younger i had a phobia for doctors lmao--- This was because when i was a baby some weird bubbles started appearing on me, so my parents took Me to the doctor, wich, instead of taking Care to make sure i didint feel much pain, just carelessly pinched the bubbles out of my skin. As a result i developed a phobia of doctors in general and, no matter if it was the dentist going to make a clean-up or a random nurse that would vaccinate me, i would just get chills and scream and sometimes even throw up. And yes, i would have these responses even though i didint remember this event. Nowdays i only get a bit nervous when i am going to the doc or dentist or to take a vaccine (in my country flu vaccines are annual lol idk If other countries do this too) but nothing else.

Kid you not I developed a phobia of crabs after watching a nature documentary and it took me almost 5 years before I could even talk about a crab let alone see one without freaking out. I became nervous and unable to breath properly sweating bullets and avoiding certain places in the supermarket . Nobody no matter how tough you think you are is so tough that they cannot develope a phobia. I was in my late 20s when it happened and nothing like it has happened to me since. Note: I had no problem with crabs or any animal for my entire childhood . Felt insane to me this could happen at all . Evaluate yourself every morning , and every night .

Interesting. I suppose that the phobia I once had was to jump into and bathe below water, however I eventually decided to face it and went diving from atop a high trampoline. The funny thing was that I stood there for about half an hour before I did, but when I looked behind me a young kid had climbed up the trampoline and was looking at me, waiting his turn. So I reasoned that if he dares to, then why shouldn't I? Great memory.

I wonder if we could use phobia treatment techniques to treat some types of picky eaters. 🤔
@LoverOfStuff
@LoverOfStuff 2 жыл бұрын
I could not be any more qualified to answer this comment- It actually is! Well, technically. For Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (a disorder commonly associated with picky eating) there’s a form of therapy called CBT-AR. A Part of it is exposure therapy similar to what’s been shown in the video, except in a much safer environment with conditions that avoid the consequences of what’s been shown in the button incident. It’s been proven successful so far! As someone with ARFID, a food phobia, and who is currently undergoing this treatment, I can say that it’s working 👉👉

While at school l knew somebody who had a fear of spiders to the extent that even an asterisk - as it resembled a spider* made her jittery when teachers wrote them on the board or on her work. A chef that made the breakfasts at one of the Casinos that l worked in had a fear of baked beans so couldn't open the cans, heat and serve it up. My friend's ex partner had a fear of buttons so everytime he came to pick up their child she would pack clothes that all had big buttons on them. Eventually, l became a Therapist and treated clients who had phobias 🙊

I have a slight fear of geckos and small spaces. I've always been afraid of geckos leaving their tails wriggling on the floor, but my claustrophobia seemed to emerge out of nowhere in my late teen years. I remember the first time I realized this when I went to a shopping mall, where it was crowded and the ceiling was barely a few feet above my head. Like if I jumped, my head would hit the ceiling. I started feeling dizzy, and when I got home I had a fever. It wasn't because I was sick that day, as some weeks after, we visited the same shopping mall, and I had the same dizziness, headaches, and fever reaction. That's when I realized I was afraid of some small spaces. Now, even when I get into a small car and the windows are shut, I can't help feeling dizzy or stop thinking about how the space of the car around me will start closing in.
