I think it’s due to cultural differences. In the USA it is more common to see the mother take this role. While in other cultures it is the other way around with the father being the protector and such. The best example of this is silent hill… in the video game it’s the father who plays the protector and nurturer…. But when a movie was made due to it being a USA production the role was changed to a woman due to the views on the USA where the mother is seen taking the role and not the father.

My thoughts on story two: I think that the dad was more pissed at the fact that the drug dealer had hurt Ted physically, sure he was upset about the affair, but after his death, he tried to keep Ted entertained/making sure he's okay, because Ted did mention that his dad would talk to him, so when Ellie(?) showed up, Ted probably thought he was gonna get hurt, but after one evening of kindness he realized that she was there to help, so when she started to throw up after seeing Ted's dad's corpse, he got scared. The dad didn't care if his murderer or ex wife got jail time. He just wanted his son to be safe. He's still a good dad even in death
