This! This exercise and notan (black and white) studies absolutely skyrocketed by painting skills. 100% recommend everybody to do this it helps with not just value but so many other things to like composition, perspective, shape design, shape/value groupings, edge control and so on.

I really like the narration and examples of breaking down images. Very helpful and comprehensive when you show it like that. Huge props for mentioning what is good and bad reference to study, I wish someone had told me that earlier when I was starting out. Don't think I can muster the time to study every day like this but you've inspired me to give value studies a shot! Definitely sharing this video with my art friends :)

Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I wanted to be as comprehensive as possible and address all the frustrations I had when starting out. Appreciate the share and happy studying! Hope it helps

Thank you Jourdan, great job editing this video. It had been totally lost on me that 3-value paintings can be used as the bones of a painting and establish exposure. I just recently had the realization after seeing the process broke down even further, creating black/white studies only and then choosing which side to put an additional value on. Seeing it work and create functional compositions near instantly was mindblowing. I realized while I understood value grouping, I didn’t understand setting up said values so they work from the get-go. Don’t know how it’s taken this long, but I’ve needed to hear it, so thanks again

Thanks a lot for the feedback Alex! I experienced something similar myself and after seeing some 3 value studies done by Sung Choi, and a post covering using the 3rd value as an accent color of sorts that something clicked for me. Very happy that it has been eye-opening for you as well 😁

There's defiitely a lot of considerations when doing them, but starting simple is the key! Thank you for your comment and I hope you find it helpful :)

i find it easier to block out the base colour of everything (or the value in greyscale) and only then apply shadows although it could be a little hard for those who are just starting out since you'll need to decide for a darker value of each base value you put down. What helped me with this problem is using a multiply layer for my shadows to see how each base value changes when the let's say 50% opacity, black multiply layer hits the layer with my base values. I learned so much from this small trick Awesome video tho! I got hooked to your channel hehe

environmental work has never been my strong point but your channel is inspiring me to try and tackle it with a more deliberate approach. i've blown through so much of art youtube that tutorials rarely offer something new but i almost always come out of your videos with some sort of takeaway! thanks for your hard work :)

Thank you taking the time to share your appreciation, it means a lot to hear it. As intimidating environments seem, I think that there generally is less resources on it compared to character design and I hope to be able to help fill that need!

Great video! Thank you for breaking down each point (I had to rewatch the part about the mid-value a few times haha). I feel like I have a good grasp of the concept. I can't wait to apply this to my studies. Please make a follow-up video:)

It'd be great to see a video approaching overcast scenes!
@jtuffdesigns11 ай бұрын
Thanks for your suggestion! I'll consider it but as a quick pointer, the real difference is that you can just play off the entire value range when it's overcast, only adding in things such as ambient occlusion and ambient light etc to help add a bit more subtlety :)
