Hi Friends! What many people love about traditional analog recording was the 'wrongness' the randomness! When I mix I love to experiment with ways to 'mess' things up! Saturation, pitch change, sometimes subtle, sometimes full-blown octaves up and down! What ideas to you use to mess things up, randomise, create wrongness that's all so right! Please let us know! For those of you watching this - This is amazing advice. The next step is: Customize your own presets!!! You can save the settings you have in one session and transfer those settings to another session ! This is how professional engineers get their own "Sound" and why people will go to YOU for a mix.

One of my favourite reverb tricks that I discovered recently for a really big, deep sounding reverb is to mix your aux signal louder than your dry signal so what your hearing is primarily verb. I found using predelay in this case will ruin the sound though. Short hall or chambers work best

My protip to share on this... I have a condenser mic hanging from the ceiling, Panned it all the way to the left and secretly recording aswell. The regular vocal mic. is in front of the singer. What I find interesting in my mixes is combining both delay and a reverb, by putting a stereo slap delay on vocals (usually about 100ms on the left and 110ms on the right) and then sending those delays to the reverb. It's not really something I discovered myself tho, I would hear it almost every time when I listened to radio. I guess you could achieve the similar result by tweaking the predelay function in your regular reverb. I don't know... Pre delayed reverbs feel a little bit different in a good way. Just putting a reverb on a track makes it feel distant and I often times don't find that useful.
@paoloolivieri87185 жыл бұрын
I think sometimes doing such tricks during tracking will help the singer interpret the song in a different and interesting way. For example one time I was playing with delays while rehearsing before tracking my band's singer on a ballad. Soon ideas came up in his mind, and he told me to exaggerate the output on the delay. He started singing around it and the song came out so great! What do you think about working on vocal sound during a tracking session? I guess sometimes it helps the singer doing his thing in a new and interesting way.
@TiqueO62 жыл бұрын
Of course depends on how the tune is to be in the end but I think it's a more "real" way to make it rather than in Post. And I've found the kind of mic really influences how much the singer (or instrumentalists) will 'emote' - if the mic is very bright like most condensers the singer will not have to produce many subtleties that otherwise they'd have to intentionally create, this dynamic also lends to decreasing creativity while a more natural mic (Ribbon Mics) will bring out more of the personality of the person as well as the sound.

Beautiful one again! But the mix-up download tracks are too easy hahaha, everything falls in place immediately, just with a smart bus structure, some balancing, press two phase switches, and an 80ies short reverb on kick+snare. So many vocal effect tracks, almost nothing more to do except delay automation, plus, to cancel boomy stuff, 2 de-essers, and - that's the quantum physics - on main voc Melda Saturator, and tweak a TDR Nova preset. Plus my synthesized reverb impulse and a multiband comp on the H3000 effect bus. It's like cream now. But the piano was hell. :) :) :) (AirW Point!; Roth-Air, panned delay 20ms, Flux Bittersweet, Pultec emulation, mid-cut. Wow that's a thunder.)

Hi, Warren! Thank you for your amazing video! @ProduceLikeaPro Biggest tip I can give is to put a basic EQ's before your time based FX (more relaxed than the filter technique you used, though that can work too). Typically with the same curve settings and even the same plugins and/or hardware EQ's (if it's possible) as whatever the most important source feeding the send turns out to be (usually it's vocals for me). Now your'e cutting what you don't want to excite, and boosting what you do want to excite. This is especially effective if the same reverb/delay is going to everything in small amounts to give things a "room" sound. The second tip I would give, is no matter how many sends are going to the majority and/or all of your tracks depending...a tiny slapback delay at the end of your FX sends and returns can be really good (say you had a delay and a reverb in a row...you would add another light delay and only feed a tiny percentage of this signal back on every track affected by this chain). This "stretches" the whole mix ever so slightly, and typically helps to "glue" things a bit better (makes the whole of things feel a lot more cohesive, but we're talking about barely adding any back in). Also loved the tips today, all of them are great!

Great video! I've learned a lot, thank you Warren. There are two things I do when I want to make my vocal sound a bit more aggressive at some parts of a song. I use the ghost voice effect of a vocoder and work with delay, modulation and distortion on it. The other one is pretty similar , but it's even more aggressiv. I use Pink Noise, EQ it, modulate it an put all kinds of effects on it like I do with the vocoder. The last in the chain is a gate, which is triggers by the vocal and only opens up, when the voice comes in. If you want to push it even more, you use a clean delay on the vocal and duck it while singing and open it up at the end of a line and do it vice versa with a delay fed by the pink noise signal it sounds pretty wrong in a good way :-)
@murraywebster12283 жыл бұрын
Feed one dense reverb into a more open one, you can go wild with effecting the first reverb, like using a Leslie effect on the first reverb, you can make it really dreamy with low rotation speeds and it’s not so obvious because it is then making the second reverb „swim“ for want of a better phrase, ramping the rotation up or down makes even more „rise or fall to the sound, gets you into some complicated automation but the added movement and variation is the cherry on the top
@JohnBassarcticsoundstudios4 жыл бұрын
Sometimes what is cool is recording like quite a few hand claps then print that on a track with the reverb printed on the track and then when you pan it left or right or down the middle it’s like those are little room pockets and you can visually see those rooms It’s like some of the 60s sounds. rooms that you hear it’s pretty cool. I believe on my best friends girl by the cars. when they come in with a hand claps you can imagine that one little room that they’re in Clapping.

Sometimes I use reverb in the insert of a snare or tom-tom bus just to bring them farther away and create a broader and more ambient sound, like in the 80s. It works well if the initial sound is too dry and "in your face". The more wet I have my reverb mix knob, the farther the source goes. Did that on my mix of this song "Stay", worked really good.

@DeltaWhiskeyBravo13579 Жыл бұрын
I really like this. Thanks much. What I do with my reverb already: Always reverb is on it's own send FX channel and that's a pre-fader send...Much more control to blend it into the dry Abbey Road EQ between 600-10K but it changes depending on the exact sound I'm after I like adding delay going into reverb I'll duck the FX channel keying off the dry, I'm after tails and wanting to push reverb into the background a bit After viewing your video, I'll add some other things like saturation and distortion, and pitch shifting, this is for "blurring" the reverb to help keep it from just being a repeat of the dry, I'll add to the EQ the mid dip as needed That separate reverb for left and right might be accomplished by my nice little Melda multiband reverb. As is, my Melda multiband delay gives me slapback and ping-pong with one instance of it. These are part of my Melda new shiny bits of plug-in toys that have a very, very deep level of editing ability.

I still find reverb hard to master, but what I like to do if I want to put the instruments in a band-like room context: Create your room reverb send, then create two sends with a time delay on it (any delay with no repeats, but 100% wet), say one with 20ms and the other with 40 and route those to the room reverb. Now send instruments you want in the back of the room to the main reverb, like e.g. drums and keys, then tracks you want closer to the listener to the 20ms delay (like maybe guitars) and the lead vocal to the 40ms delay. Gives you a nice depth with just one reverb. Not my original idea though, I saw it somewhere... 😀

Toni Fisher "The big hurt" long ago used it, and I think Led Zeppelin used it in "What is and what should never be" the other is that effect used in songs like Winchester Cathedral, video killed the radio star, etc :o) Wow that section about 3:57 the reverb almost sounded like there was a female voice hint along with the main voice..

Need a advice: recorded a song, guitar, vocals. The song tells a story so i decided to give the song more atmosphere with background rain, thunder. So but I just didn’t felt right like this. Something was missing. So I added reverb to main and background vocals. People say now the reverb doesn’t fit to the song, but thats how I wanted to song to sound like. Without it, the vocals, at least I think that way, don’t fit in the arrangement, because ya something is just missing without it. What shall I do?
