100% agree with everything you said in the video. I’m on my third pair. Second pair of custom hearing aids. I absolutely love them! I did try the behind the ear for my second pair, never again. I felt like I couldn’t hear as good with them and every time I told the Dr, she would “tweak” them but it was never right.

Dr. Cliff, I agree with your take on advantages of custom in ear hearing aids, but you omitted what I found is another important advantage. I have been using hearing aids for several years (beginning with non-prescription aids from Eargo). Unfortunately, my hearing loss became greater than Eargo's design limits. I began trialing prescription aids. Trying RICs, I was completely unsatisfied! My Eargo's had spoiled me in one important aspect - directionality. Using RIC aids, my stereo became monophonic sound absent of soundstage. While hearing birds, when accompanying my wife on field trips, I could now hear birds but had no clue as to their location. My audiologist switched me to custom ITC aids. What an improvement! Stereo was now stereo, and now I can locate sounds much more easily, although not perfectly. If they were further in the ear canal the pinna effect would be improved providing better directionality, but they would lose both Bluetooth connectivity and rechargeable batteries.

I do not care about having rechargeable because I never had them before but I would like to have Bluetooth now to connect my hearing aids to my phone and TV and IPad because you can hear things better if just the sounds I need to hear go to my hearing aids. But you are right and I have a problem with directionality too and do not know where the sounds are coming from and they are just sounds in my hearing aids. I can kind of guess now where the sounds are coming from because I learned first what they were so if I hear something and know what it is now that is probably where the sound it located. At first it was really difficult because I had enough amplification to hear some sounds but I had no idea what they were because I never heard them before and I did not really think about some things making sounds and you think that they would sound different or in different tones but not how my hearing aids pick them up.

Your video sounds so clear I also got my starkey bte power plus hearing aids .evolve ai works well I’m server to profound these aids are pair with iPhone .so good i still Have to use captions on iPhone. But these are still good hearing aids .

Dr. Cliff I recently had moderate sensorineural hearing loss went to an audiologist and he recommended me CIC and IIC hearing aid. But he didn't explain clearly why only these options what i wanted to know was if i can go for Behind the ear hearing aid or not? Have been to multiple places but all i have come across are the distributors or salesman trying to sell me the hearing aid instead of helping out.

Yesterday my ENT recommended that I consider a BAHA. I’ll try it out later this week but I’m skeptical that a BAHA would be that much better.

Yes you can. I have a severe loss and my audiologist recommended I get the Phonak Virto Paradise custom ITE. Of course, talk to your own provider about it.

I think you can but I asked me same question here too. My Audiologist showed me Oticon Exceed Ultrapower hearing aids and they were over the ears and I think that he would have went with Custom if he thought that they would work better for me now instead of my Exceeds.

I would like to have custom hearing aids because of my receivers getting caught on everything and with my receivers behind my ears when I hear some sounds I am not sure where they are coming from because it is wherever my receivers pick up the sounds for me. I think with custom hearing aids I might be able to tell more where the sounds are. With my last hearing aids I had more amplification to hear some more sounds but they are just sounds in my receivers and not like I think that Hearing people here them because they know where they are and I really do not. But my Audiologist showed me the Oticon Exceed Ultrapower hearing aids and my receivers would be in back again and bigger than that sample because I have more amplification. But if custom hearing aids would have the same amount of amplification they would work and if you have custom earmolds you hear more sounds because the seal is better to get more sounds I can amplify enough to hear them. How are custom hearing for hearing and understanding speech?

Larry, only your audiologist can help for a more complete answer based upon your hearing loss. I am using Signia Insio AX7 aids and they work well for understanding speech. My loss is about 70 Dbs at 4 K Hz. I found the best way to test for me was to listen to one of the British shows… with their accent I cannot guess what was said, I actually need to hear it. Without my aids watching is very painful.

@@russtanton3141 That is what I do and I read lips and try to guess what they are saying. For me I was not hearing speech with background sounds around me because I need my hearing aids to pick up the sounds of speech and amplify it above the background sounds so I can hear some of it. So my Audiologist got me these kind of hearing aids that are supposed to be better at hearing and understanding speech. But hearing with hearing aids is a challenge because I am not hearing tones of sounds because everything is amplified so much for me to hear it and it is difficult to know where the sounds are coming from or what they are if you never heard them before.

Any word on when your review of jabra enhance is coming? :) Would really like to hear some words on how they perform as hearing aids regarding meeting perscriptions, how good their focus mode is and streaming and such, and whether they are better than bose in any way since the price is pretty comparable. I have never had an Audiologist recommend this style of hearing, even though it looks like the perfect thing for my hearing issues. I assume they are way more expensive then the behind the ear that i have been wearing. I actually don't know where to find a provider who would help me decide if this would be the right way to go. My ENT is a one size fits all kind of place .

There are more disadvantages of ITE hearing aids than advantages. The biggest one is the shape of your outer ear changes and ITE will become loose. Second, the repairs cannot be done in the clinics and you will be for a week without hearing aids. The repairs are also more expensive. The only two reasons to get it if you have problems with your hands or if you spend mostly time in the hospital bed.

Hi Dr Cliff, Please may I ask with custom hearing aids how long will the fit last? Do they become loose over time, I did start out years ago with custom aids and as I lost more of my hearing I was told they would not have the power for me(they were cic). At the moment I use Widex 440. But it looks like I may be able to go back to them? Regards Dave.

Yes, over time you ears will grow. However, this usually takes a number of years to happen.

But RICs aren’t just “rubber domes”. You can still make a RIC a “custom” hearing aid and manipulate venting with a click mould or C shell? Interesting points about wind noise however

That's what I have ... a receiver in the canal HA. I wear glasses, but the only time I had problems was when I'd want to remove my mask at church. Luckily right now we don't need to wear masks at churxh.
