This series is an educational project sponsored by Google.
We all know that being active in some form is good for us, and no I don’t just mean physical activity. What I am talking about is socializing, practicing mindfulness, and exercise. But what I want to learn today is why that is. I also want to find out how much exercise is good for us, and when does it become bad? Or does it ever become bad? Why is socializing good for us? What if we don’t enjoy being around people? And what about mindfulness? Is it really helpful? We hear about all of these things every day, but no one really explains if and/or why they help. Because much of this is way over my head I reached out to my friends Cassey, Suze, and Alexa! They are going to share their expertise when it comes to fitness, mediation, and socialization!
I'm Kati Morton, a licensed therapist making Mental Health videos!

I wish mental health was treated more like physical health. People are told to take a multivitamin everyday and do 30min of exercise 2x a week but there isn’t that push to do similar preventative care for your mental health. No one recommends self care activities 2x a week. Kat’s doing so much great work to change that and end the stigma!! ❤️❤️❤️

This video was super helpful! As someone who was never diagnosed with an eating disorder, I definitely went through low periods in my life where i binged and restricted calories as well as exercising past my limit. It’s crazy how at the time I thought that was the best way to achieve results i wanted. Now I eat mainly at home but i don’t restrict myself from snacks and sweets and i try to do yoga consistently. Like you said in the video; I have really loved my body way more from allowing myself to eat and doing exercise I liked rather than being tough and abusing my body.

I was going to skip lunch today but this video made me realize I need to be kinder to my body. I am just so busy and don't want to cook when I am tired at the end of a long day or tired after forcing myself to get out of bed. Food costs a lot since I buy fast food... It takes me so long to cook food I like at home.

FAQ Question - I am a recovering alcoholic with social anxiety. I get so much help and comfort from AA books but anxiety makes going to meetings hard and asking someone to be my sponsor feels impossible. Many of the steps involve talking and reaching out to people. How can this program help me stay sober when it relies so much on social interaction, which I really can’t handle right now. Thanks !

It is great to hear that excercise doesn't has to be overly intense or hard from somebody that knows that much about it. Excercise and weight los have always been harsh for me, specially since I was raised to "give it all" and go with the "no pain no gain" idea. Mentally, it got me to the point I couldn't even face competitions out of pure fear of not doing well enough, and it also got me a broken bone. I knew I could just do something easier, but sometimes we need somebody else to tell us so. All the information in here is so useful! Thank you Kati

Guys if ur scared to be judged at the gym or not motivated I highly suggest you go to orange theory. (As long as ur doctor has cleared you to work out) you have to book classes (they’re 1 hour and if u cancel with less than 8 hours before ur class u have to pay which is a great motivator) you have a heart rate monitor and work to get your heart rate in certain heart rate zones (your screen will change colour depending) it’s a dark lit room with orange lights (so dw u can still see) and everyone is so focused on their own heart rate zones that they don’t even look at you. It’s legit 1 hour and there’s music blasting and a coach who tells u where to get ur heart rate into. I love it. Best thing I ever did for my bulimia. And I love it. It’s so fun and I’ve only been going for a month but I MENTALLY feel better than I have since I was 10.
@coreyjacq

I will say that ur calories are tracked based on your heart rate and so if that’s triggering at the moment maybe consider it when you’re able to handle the anxiety that accompanies this 👍🏻

Hey Kati, I'm a male with CPTSD Anand my past hit me out of the blue 7 yrs and I actually lost everything over time. I'm tryi n so hard to get better mentally and get past horrible trauma and I've been in therapy for 6 yrs and I'm on that doesn't miss my appts and do the homework with 100% of my heart in it. My last therapist stopped taking my insurance and it devastated me, we clicked so well and I just really loved her. Well I found another amazing therapist who is a real free spirit, has a flavor of hot tea made for me when I get, she kicks her shoes and sits Indian style in her chair, etc. I've told her more about all my sexual abuse and don't hold anything back from her because she has me relaxed so much before the hour even starts. Well because of this closeness I feel very attracted to her, not anything I would act on, but I feel bad at times 2with thoughts when we're together. I'm sure you'll say this is sooooo wrong and I need to not go back. I've watched you for a couple yrs now so I feel like I would get the best suggestion from you do to you being so real and down to earth. I also started having feelings with my last therapist as well and I'm a man of God so I feel terrible with them both being married and I know I would NEVER act on it. Please help me Kati if you read these.

Hi Kati! I was wondering if you have a video on what to do if your therapist tells you that she is pregnant? Or what to do/ how to express your feelings about her pregnancy and maternity leave. Personally I feel kinda abandoned by her even though I know she will come back. It’s hard to tell her how I’m feeling about it because I feel it’s not appropriate even though she tells me she will help me process it. But anyways I love you videos! Keep doing what your doing!

Meredith Shaw most schools have some sort of counselor on staff. See if u can set up an appointment. If you’re too nervous to ask for one, you can go to a teacher you like ( if you have one) & ask if they can set up the first appointment for you. Even if it’s about to be summer break, it’d still be very helpful and the counselor may help you find someplace budget friendly for the summer. Hope this helps and know that with the right help it DOES GET BETTER!!! ❤️

I don't know where to ask this, so I hope this is alright. I struggle with depression. I am trying to get out of the house more and pursue more kinds of relationships. I have a date with a girl coming up, and I hope it goes well. My question is, when is it appropriate to tell someone new in my life about it? I've ruined friendships and relationships in the past by mentioning it too early, scaring people away, and too late, ruining the established tone of the relationship. I know I have to tell people that I'm close to about my depression, but I hate doing it because it always goes wrong.

Kati, what do you think about the popularity of "Law of Attraction"? Most people that I know that applies that law is that they say that it makes them mindful of their deeds and words and thoughts. So yeah, what are your opinions about LOA?

Love this. On long road trips I will do glute clenches. When I had a position where I was confined to my desk I had stationary pedals under my desk and a weight bell. I would also do push-ups (forward and backwards) using my desk. Or while grocery shopping, I use the bags as dumbbells and curl them on my way to the car. I Love that all and any exercise can be creative. On the flipside, I definitely will need to learn and practice the meditation piece. And most definitely the socialization!! Another great video, Kati!! Thank you!

Excellent production quality. At one point I wanted to see your name but you were presenting things. Like they do on CNN, MSNBC basically most programs leave a small version of your logo outside the “safe” zone which is reserved exclusively for your show. Part of the goal is “top of the mind recall.” Who’s production comes to mind in your category?” If they say you, it’s hard name ID(you want hard name ID). Soft ID is when you mention something about your production and then they recall your brand.

Really needed this at this point. I use exercising as a way to replace self harm. But being the perfectionist that I am I have to be my best. So now I'm thinking I may over exercise.

Just finished cleaning half of my room and I was sweating as well as vacuuming. That’s the only time I’ll break out a sweat and exercise 😂
