Actually, some TVs do supply full-time power to the USB port. It just depends on your tv. I have one that does.

Tampatec Awesome! Thank you so much! I absolutely love fixing electronics, but I'm trying not to spend a fortune on parts due to uncertainty. Basically, I'm not entirely sure which part to get for one of the TVs I mentioned. I got this 55" Westinghouse flatscreen and there's no standby light. The TV isn't getting any power, and so I think it's the main power board. However, I need to be absolutely certain before I order the part. The TV worked absolutely perfectly a couple weeks ago, but after watching ALL of your videos, and reading several other articles, a few have suggested it could be the main board. I know it's gotta be one or the other, but I'm only 80% sure it's the main power board, considering there's no standby light.

Thanks for the video ... I’m still having an issue maybe you can help with. I have an Onkyo TX646 and I have my tv going to my receiver via HDMI... I thought I could just hook the 3.5 to RCA jacks from the echo to the “TV” audio input on the back of the tuner. It shows TV on the front of my tuner when I’m watching tv but the echo doesn’t play over the tv volume. I was hoping that the echo would play over the tv programming.... but instead I can’t hear the echo at all. Any other ideas? I appreciate it

Curious as to why you had to launch straight into Netflix in order to turn the TV on? Is it not possible to say "Alexa, turn the TV on"? It would have been nice to see it go straight to a normal TV channel from standby so I can see if that's at least possible. Also, the time it takes to go from your voice command to taking action is just far too long to be of practical use. When you want to say 'Alexa, pause' who wants to wait like 15 seconds for it to respond? Furthermore, most modern TVs already have smart features, for example my main Samsung has Netflix and so forth built in - so having to add a FireTV stick into the mix is doubling up on all that functionality which seems like a considerable waste (Smart TVs were pretty expensive at the time it was purchased). It's such a shame that Amazon can't just add this connectivity to their smart-TV app in order to allow existing tech to connect to their Echo devices in the way I think most people would expect. I'd love to set this up for my parents so they could control TV with voice - but it's far too convoluted and unresponsive for the expectations of a non technophile imho. Lastly, I'd like to see how this method compares in terms of functionality and responsiveness to installing a Samsung Smartthings Hub to link the Echo to a Samsung TV as their recommended IoT setup. Is there any chance you could make a video comparison sometime? I'm sure other people would like to see the different options available before making a purchase - and for that your video was really valuable - thanks for taking the time to document it!

chances are, most TV's nowadays if are in standby mode will not pump out power to the ports in hope of a signal, so the stick will require its own source of power in order to receive signals and commands to power on tv or update etc.

"Alexa, turn on tv" only works if you have a smart plug, but since you're using fire tv stick with hdmi control the fire tv stick will turn on tv once it receives a command from remote or echo dot.
