What a very great tutorial. Excellent detailed advice that I did find very helpful. Thank you. Just a note, the work you were doing on stripping the wire, I find the better way is to use a lighter to heat/burn the part of the insulation you want to strip off, then simply blow on it then while it's warm, pull that piece off with your fingers or a pliers. Takes 4 seconds. Way faster and no need to purchase a wire stripper.

The pre-out sub out on a preamplifier on a AV receiver is the worst connection for music, it’s a specialized connection for HT and limits the subwoofer from playing very high. High level connections are the best for music but some amplifiers can’t connect directly to subs. LFE connections are the most friendly in most situations and doesn’t limit music.

Played with the settings and changed speakers to small but it then doesn't display subwoofer settings. I changed them back to small and I can then turn the subwoofer to "on" and I also tried "plus" mode but nothing. Tried it in direct mode, advanced surround and all the other modes. Hi can I use a passive subwoofer to a av receiver
@spokje2 жыл бұрын
I still don't get the difference between LFE and the Line-in (left) input. Some receivers have a subwoofer LFE out, and obviously you connect this to your LFE input on the subwoofer (if it has one). But what is the best option if your receiver only has subwoofer pre-out and your subwoofer itself has line-in (mono) and LFE? Do you connect the cable from pre-out to line-in (mono) or LFE input?
@henrybutchy3242 Жыл бұрын
Good question. I think it is not as simple as using a Y connector to combine the 2 rca out - red white - into a single rca. I think a crossover issue looms. The LFE out has already filtered out the highs. The sub rca in is expecting a full range signal and will apply its crossover function (and does your sub have variable crossover knob?). Will the lfe (out) crossover result fight with or limit the crossover function in the sub. I dunno, but I think this sitch is more than just a cable thing.

Its hard for me give advice for this because i cant see it in front of me. using LFE vs the internal crossover will really depend on how you plan to use the sub. If its for the .1 LFE channel then the LFE input. If using it....for example in line with the rear surround speakers then the internal would probably be it...but again i cant see the equipment to decide. Are there any advantages or disadvantages to the way you connect the Subwoofer LFE to the Audio Receiver? I have an PolkAudio RM20 speaker system that recommends hooking up the speakers the third way you showed on this video. I'm just curious as to why they suggest it that way. I was using the LFE input on the powered subwoofer to connect with the audio receiver. I havn't been able to compare the audio in two different setups yet and like I said I'm just curious if there is an advantage or reason why to connect these speakers a specific way.
@gratmatassa5432 Жыл бұрын
it's recommended to use the speaker outputs (high level input) rather than the lfe inputs (low level input) as it is where the final sound comes from, it's the power output stage of your amp/receiver rather than from the pre amp stage. think about it your speakers are powered by the output stage why not use the same output for the sub both receiving the same signal, it's a speaker at the end of the day.

Great video, very informative, but I have a few questions that didn't quite get. My receiver has a sub out, does this mean I can go both options 1 and 3 at the same time? Currently i'm doing option 1. My front speakers frequency response can go down to 55hz per the manual, so if doing option 3 also, can I set the crossover for my front speakers as low as the receiver can allow me to set? If i'm doing option 3, does this mean the receiver is supplying power to the speaker level input of the sub, and into speaker level output?

I have a Yamaha RX-V465 receiver and a JBL TLX PS10 subwoofer. I originally connected my two speakers through the high level input (on the sub) to the receiver. After watching your video, would it be in my best interest to connect my sub using a male to male RCA splitter to use the lower level input or would that overload the sub?
@OldtradesReviews3 жыл бұрын
I would not do both. And this depends on the application as to the better choice. For example I have my surround backs connected to the subs high level speaker wire ( receiver is set to large for those) I have done that with front speakers as well. I would not connect the receivers rca output to it as well. Another sub for that. The sound will be cleaner and less overloaded. You could experiment with using the rca or speaker wire
@trevorwoo36933 жыл бұрын
@@OldtradesReviews So my full build would be 5.1 and also a passive sub. So with my setup you would say to connect my 2 surround with my subwoofer through the high level speaker wire. @OldtradesReviews3 жыл бұрын
Hi, here is the problem I see. I have not listened to the speaker BUT.... The top woofers are passive radiators. Which will only move based on your receivers wattage moving the 5 1/4 mid bass drives. So its a 2 way design. The problem is it takes lots of power to indirectly get passive radiators moving. The Definitive techs have a big 300 watt amp and even with that, the passive radiators many times at lower volumes are only moving at a fraction of what the powered woofer is. When i had the kef q950 at lower volumes using my receivers 120 watts, I could not feel the passive radiators even vibrating with my finger. The point is I would want a amp that is 250 watts plus for pass speakers.

I personally do not like their horn tweeters. I find them ear fatiguing...like concert speakers. With that said I have not listened to that speaker. It has very high sensitivity so it should play loud. The tone of the horn tweeter may not match well. The low frequency response is rated at 57 hz....so bass will probably start to drop out around 70hz. The Polk Audio reserve r400 may be worth a try as it uses tech from the legend series. It also has same parts from the tower I reviewed and those are favorites of mine. The tweeter should blend well with the 9080s

Is the front speaker being connected with speaker wire? It depends on what the manufacture says in the manual. Always read it over. Typically for best performance, its best to only do 1. so left and right speakers with speaker wire or. left and right pre amp out puts......or just LFE. But doing both(even if manufacture allows) will overload most subs during big movie explosions.

The other problem with doing that is you cant set the volume for different inputs. For example using the L/R receiver pre out into the sub will require adjustment on the subs volume knob.
