I'm getting into audio again after a long time away. So I'm building my audio system now. How well do you believe this will sound. I'm getting a SONY SA-CS9, I'm getting a set of BOSTON ACOUSTICS HD5 I'll have them hooked up to a TOSHIBA SD-6109C? Another question my bedroom is roughly 10 feet x 11 feet. I know pretty small. Would you recommend adding a larger set of floor speakers I've got a vintage set of PIONEER (I believe were from the 1990s). Looking for advice. T.I.A.

Hi Randy, amazing review..Can I ask a quick question, I am complete beginer in this HT journey, just bought myself a Kef Q950, Kef Surrounds, Denon x3500 (old one from my cousin), SVS SB1000 and AudioaLab 7000a.. Currently Denon is running the Surround and Centre, and the SUB.. Audiolab is running as pre-amp with those Kef950s.. I am currently happy with the setup, but want to try connecting SVS to AudioLab... Not exactly sure with the cabling part, will it be a Y Splitter type RCA, 1 Male to the "In" socket in SVS to 2 Male RCA in the Pre-Outs sockets in the AudioLab

The speaker inputs on the SVS are for left and right channel. From your amp you would run a separate set of speaker cables to the sub, and a set of cables to the speakers. This is a clarification from the SVS manual.

Yes! Even if the sub has high-level out, run 2 sets of wires. The high-level out is just a chunk of metal in the signal path to your main speakers, plus depending on the sub's location, using the high-level output could make wiring difficult to nearly impossible.

I did it a bit differently myself! I was building a system on a serious budget. I got some used Tannoy Proto-J bookshelf monitors, a Sony STR-DH190, and a Klipsch R12SW (subwoofer) from a firesale when they were discontinued. But the R12SW doesn't have speaker level inputs, and the Sony unit is only 2 channels - so what I did was I bought a line-out converter (Access AX-MLOC725) to create a set of RCA outs, piggybacking off the speaker wire, which I could then run to the sub. And it actually works really well. The line-out converter is intended for automotive use, and it even has a power wire, but the signal system is passive - the power wire is just for amp switching, but not required to pass signal. I also used a little insignia DAC to connect it to my TV - and the DAC is... Not great, but it gets the job done well enough, kind of. Ordered a Schiit Modi 3 the other day, hasn't come in yet, but it should be way better than the Insignia one. All in all I spent somewhere in the neighborhood of $650 to get a system that, IMO, punches way, way above its weight. And the line-out converter allowed me to use a miraculously inexpensive sub that otherwise wouldn't have worked. I'm quite proud of myself for that one

Something is off a bit here my brother. About 6:17 you talk about speaker level input. The third way.... You mention putting in the speaker lines(you tap across 4 binding posts on the amp output) into the sub. Where you also then tap, on the sub's 4 binding posts. But on the sub, you actually tap 2 posts up top and say - speakers input. Then you tap the lower 2 posts at 6:21and say... speaker outputs. The 4 binding posts on that SVS sub are all inputs. 1 pos, 1 neg for each - right and left. You need 8 binding posts or connections on a sub for high level input from amp to high level output for your speakers. I'm not sure if anyone else mentioned this to you. Figured I would chime in and help a bit. I mention this because I'm upgrading across the board. I have a Schiit HEL 2e running into the Aiyima a07 as a mini desktop solution. I have the KEF Q150's paired with an old Sony SA-W2500 sub. It has 8 connectors for this 3rd way. However, the sub is sloppy and slow. I also have the META's arriving either tomorrow or Wednesday to test out. I wanted to pick up this sub you have featured. It looks as though I cannot hook it up this third way with my current setup. I do need a sealed, moderately accurate, somewhat fast sub... This SVS seems to be right for my budget. With that... I need your help. Heck, I just need help period. I am considering ordering the Aiyima A3001 - www.aiyima.com/products/subwoofer-amplifier-aiyima-a3001?variant=29384225554507 Would the 3.5mm output from the A07 to the RCA inputs on the A3001 via 3.5mm to RCA connect help me get connected to this sub, through this sub amp? Quick, Dirty & Cheap! Got any thoughts? Is this a credible 4th way? Wondering how to dial it all in if it's doable. Aiyima sells the lower powered sub amp paired with the A07. Thoughts? Side note: D320's came today... box was really damaged. Wharfedale is offering me a refund. Would have loved to test them out. Maybe put them into my kids gaming setup. Oh well. Thanks for your time and attention. Maybe a Subwoofer 3.0 video is in order.

Hi Randy - BTW you **CAN** hook up a subwoofer to an amp's speaker terminals even if they sub doesn't have high-level inputs. You just need a small passive device known as a "speaker-level to line-level converter" - these are often used in car audio. They are reasonably priced (a.k.a. "cheap"!) and a nice option for people who don't have a sub out and also don't have speaker-level inputs on their subwoofer.

Randy, there is yet another way of hooking up a sub! For subs without speaker level inputs, you can use what's called a line level converter to turn a high level input into low level RCAs. This is often used in vehicle audio systems but it works just as good for home use if your receiver has no RCA output and your sub has no speaker level inputs.

Many thanks for this video! I thought you might be interested in the following, alternative approach to connecting a subwoofer to your sound system if your audio card or DAC has no 'subwoofer out' and/or you want more control over the audio signal that goes to the subwoofer but are not able to achieve this by other means (e.g. through software): - Split the left- and right-channel analog audio outputs of your audio card or DAC; - Use low-pass FMOD plugs to filter the higher audio frequencies from the duplicate left- and right audio outputs that you want to use with the subwoofer; - If the subwoofer does not have separate inputs for the left and right channels: merge the output of the two FMOD plugs using an audio Y-splitter cable; - Send the merged signal to the subwoofer. This is how I added a subwoofer to my PC audio system, with a crossover point that was appropriate to my other speakers.

I own the entire line of Sith Audio products and all have in different ways improved my HiFi considerably. One of my favourites which I don't think you have showcased and might want to review are the "STA family repellant cod liver oil skin lotion". It has three effects where it firstly softens your skin to such a degree that it actually turns your body into a functional bass trap. The second function is improved aerodynamics which let the sound waves pass by objects with much reduced resistance. You can smear it on all of your furniture and equipment as well as on yourself which will make your room sound bigger and will open up your soundstage, especially in the depth dimension. It also works a lot better if you listen naked. The third gain is the repellant function where the smell of the product will make nosy or needy family members less prone to interrupt your HiFi Worship Hour. It has really worked wonders for me and I don't think I can ever go back. My wife even lets me sleep in my listening room now.

Excellent tutorial! While I didn’t learn anything, I sure wish I had known about you when I first started out. You very clearly and succinctly lay out a lot of info that many audiophiles just “pick up” along the way through trial and error. I’d highly recommend this for anyone just starting out. On a side note, would be nice to see you do some side by side comparisons between budget pieces and more expensive pieces. Eg, how does that emotiva amp compare with a parasound that costs six times more? Well-done.

The 3rd way to connect the sub left me a bit confused, because on that one, you have 4 terminals, unless it is R and L (IN) and R and L (out) you can't get connection out to a pair of speakers, you can only connet to one of the towers (left or right). So as I see it, to pass the signals to the subwoofer and then to the speakers you would need 8 connectors, 2+2 IN where the amp connects and 2+2 OUT to both towers. If those 4 you have are all IN , you need an amp with 2 channels A+B where A connects to the towers and B to the sub, on the amp you have to select A+B to run at the same time. A=speakers B=sub
@mattbarton8480
@mattbarton8480 3 жыл бұрын
Great vid again. Just thought I’d pass on the 4th way to connect to a sub if you don’t have a subwoofer line out on the amp and also don’t have high level inputs on the sub. Jumper the speakers either at the amp or the speakers and run them into a line level converter. You can then join the two rca’s from the line level converter into a single rca and plug that into the sub line in. (I do this with the Reisong A12 into a JBL stage A120p sub and it works a treat)

To set level, I find it’s best to turn it up until it sounds impressive and then down just until you can’t “hear” it. That’s usually the right level or still slightly high. I usually turn it one more notch down. I recently boosted the sub on my HT sub (I have a two subs for stereo and HT. Both are SVS) because someone was less than impressed by it. I turned it up two notches and Wow. I did this blind. After a bit, I found it too much. I turned it down one and then up and generally kept messing with it. I finally got it where it sounded just a little meatier than it did before. I got the flashlight and finally looked. It was exactly where it was when I started this debacle! Lesson learned.

WOW! This is so helpful! I just bought this same sub and I'm trying to hook it up. This video is a gift and it was even uploaded on my birthday! lol Seriously, it seems like 98% of YT creators do unboxings and reviews, but very few explain how to set it up and even fewer explain the reasoning behind it. This is extremely helpful to a beginner like me. I bought a new TV on Black Friday which has led to a cascade of additional purchases I had no intention of making, including a Denon receiver, 5 Polk speakers (front and rear + center) and this sub. The receiver has been a BEAST to understand. I'm sitting here last night with all these boxes everywhere and I'm watching TV on my laptop because I couldn't figure out why I had no sound. I've contacted Denon several times and finally gave up when I realized no one there seems to be able to help. Anyone, sorry for the tangent. I'm grabbing my coffee now and finish this video, right after I subscribe! :-)

Another way you could do this is to run your power amp's "B" speaker outputs to the speaker level inputs on the subwoofer. It took me like 3 months to figure that one out. LOL. It's not as elegant as RCA jacks, but I didn't want to daisy chain my preamp to my equalizer to my sub to my power amp. This is a lot simpler and I think it sounds a little bit better? Could be placebo effect but it feels like it blends a little bit better. Or maybe I'm just crazy

I have the Sith Audio toilet seat. It's like the vertical freezers at Target, when you get within several feet of it in the dark, it lights up a luminous green color, so you can see it in the dark. Sometimes if you've eaten some spicy Mexican food or something, you don't have that extra second to turn on the light switch. It also warms the seat up within seconds. If you urinate standing up and any of it hits the seat, a 98 decibel siren comes on, loud enough to wake the neighbors, until you either put the seat back up again or sit on it. It also then gives you an electrical shock on your bum, "but just once". It might have been designed by a woman. If you don't want to miss a football play on TV or something while on the toilet, it has a feature that if you wiggle your rear end while sitting on it, it will turn up the volume on either your TV or stereo so you can hear it. Audiophile quality sound of course. It is a known fact that most touchdowns and Grand Slam Home Runs occur while you are sitting on the toilet, or in the kitchen fixing a snack. I favor twinkie and Ding Dongs with mango juice. After you flush, it makes a boat whistle sound and says "This is your Captain". "Thank you". It is not only audiophile approved, but also NASA approved. It just goes up and down, not to outer space, although I haven't read the manual fully. Larry has one too. Wait a minute. It's not Sith Audio that makes it. Their stuff is a bunch of crap. I see it's made by the Captain Melvin Seahorse Co., that makes short life tubes. Don't ever flush a dead sea horse down the toilet. Heaven forbid, who knows what would happen then!

I found this video just wondering if I could hook a surround sound subwoofer up to my guitar amplifier. But I'm gonna have to watch this one or 5 more times to figure it out. Plus, you look like one of my childhood heroes, Mick Foley. Except you have all of your teeth and you are more clean cut. Great video, sir. Have a nice day!

I got duped buying a Yamaha integrated amplifier but it wasn't a total loss... what he gave me I just need to throw away except for the subwoofer! It's a cheap one (DSE) but it's pretty big and has a variety of ways to connect, I used the wired way since my amp doesn't have a line out.

You missed talking about high low adapters, I think. If your amp does neither have a dedicated sub out nor pre outs and you subwoofer doesn't have high level /speaker level connections, you can still connect the sub to the amp if you use a high low adapter, that converts a speaker level signal into RCA signal. These are often used in car audio and also very affordable.

Great video on an interesting topic. I must tell you that I am delighted you have picked up Sith as a sponsor....after trying their toilet paper for the first time I filled out the included survey and mailed it in. My responses were generally favorable---I mentioned that I didn't mind the $35.00 price per roll but I found the product to be slightly coarse and a little scratchy. A couple of days later I received an email thanking me for my comments and that I should expect a thank you gift very soon. I was simply giddy with joy when my gift arrived: it was a personalized leather biker vest inscribed with this message: "I'm Just a Big Sith-y Boy, Butt That's the Way I Roll!". So give us a honk if you spot the wife and I rollin' down the road (I'm the one on the back of the bike)!

3/29/22 Two questions please . .. while explaining choice #2 ( as in two of 3 ways to hook up a pwrd sub ) 1- finish the thought as to the RCAs coming from sub to the power amps - - - WHAT ? What connection would I need on the power amp to take the signal from powered sub RCA OUT ? 2- is it necessary to have a dedicated power amp to even have a second of three ways to connect a powered sub ? 3- concerning the 3rdway to connect a sub . . . Wouldn’t the sub need 8 binding posts ? If running two speakers ? The sub needs to have 4 in and 4 binding post out , yes ? I’m so confused ( and new at this ) . I was stopping the video to take notes , so thanks for making it . Nice job!

You can connect a passive sub to any cheap goodwill reciever. Just connect all 5 positive and negative ports to the sub and get up to 500w or more. Plus if you have another reciever with sub out you can use that one for the speakers and the other one for a dedicated subwoofer amp.

I'm not sure if I'm setting mine up correctly, so was hoping you can steer me to the right direction. My subwoofer has high-level input and LFE. I hooked up my front speakers via the HLinputs, and set the cross over of the Front speakers to Full Band, then in the subwoofer, have my crossover set to about 120. On the receiver, I also have my subwoofer crossover set to 120 and connected a cable to the LFE input on the sub the .1 So far, I don't hear issues or clippings, other than every once in a while my subwoofer would turn on and off unless I unplug the LFE from the sub even if the receiver is already on standby.

Thank you for the tutorial CAM! Between all the settings and connectors on a sub, on audio amps and HT amps, your video is very helpful in knowing where to start. Also, some HT amps have the room correction modes - another variable into the mix for settings that (for me at least) adds confusion in getting a nice and dialed in adjustment. I do a reverse sub crawl every Halloween when my spouse dresses up as Princess Leia in the dancing costume with a speaker cable chain. I sit on the couch like Jabba the Hutt giving instructions on where to place the subwoofer. I tend to hear the perfect spot quickly, in order to avoid getting choked by Princess Leia.

I've got the Polk Audio RM10 5.1 speaker setup with the subwoofer. The sub isn't nearly as fancy as the one you showed here, and I'm sure not nearly as nice either. The sound is so-so, but I'm not doing any fancy crossover stuff. I still have to research if my receiver is even capable of that, and I've had it 4-5 years. Even so, it's an entry-lvl receiver with not much power. I'm currently looking into upgrading the receiver - also used but should be better with more power. But hey, w/ the low budget I have, the speakers will have to do. I'm upgrading the front speakers soon, but it's also the budget option.

D class amps have floating speaker outputs. This means neither side of the speaker is tied to ground, both the red and black terminal ffloat 20 to 40v above ground so if your going to try and hook both speaker outputs of a class D amp to a single sub something is going to be unhappy because inside the speaker inputs of a sub are usually connected to common and if your sub uses a 3 wire power input (hot, neutral, and earth ground) and your class D amp also has a power input ground you may be shorting out your class D amplifier. IF YOU USE THE SOPEAKER INPUTS OF A SUB LOOK AT THE INSTRUCTIONS OR CALL YOUR DEALER TO FIND OUT WHAT YOU SHOULD DO. i have a pair of PS Audio M700's and their instructions say to use the chassis of each amp for ground and use the red binding post as positive - the m700 chassis is grounded through a 3wire power cord.. This means you will only get have the voltage for the input of the sub but that should not matter. I'm using dual Sumiko S9 subs so I just connect a single amp output to each sub, also the S9's do not have ground connection so they are "floating. Just check with whoever made your class D amp to be safe.
