Heel-toe shifting only finally made sense to me when I took my car to the Tail of the Dragon with friends who were faster/better/braver drivers than I. There were many times when I had to brake before a very tight corner AND downshift to exit the corner at the proper speed/RPMs. I felt myself hesitating as balanced the brake vs shift decision. Sometimes I needed to do both at once (but that wasn't possible) Then it dawned on me: if I knew how to heel/toe, I would be doing them both at the same time.

Seriously though - Don't powershift into OD! Your over-driving the driveshaft faster than the engine. This consumes gobs of torque to accomplish that and under full power will really shock the gear train. Ease into the upshift to OD then get back on it.

Actually I find this vid so good, he does explain pretty good these techniques, maybe not everyone are gonna use it, but it does work. I do use double clutch on my gearbox, firstly cause it's an old truck engine, so if you don't want to switch gears and hear a noise, you double clutch, and afterwards, when we wanna down-shift, mostly on Diesel engines, we gotta have the right rpm in order to make a good compression, if you don't have the rpm, you won't be able to down-shift, you'll stay on neutral, and that's risky if you're going down the road. Greetings

@V8Roehrldrifter
@V8Roehrldrifter 5 жыл бұрын
Heel and toe is a racing technique to keep a car stable while braking and downshifting when driving as fast as possible (on a track for example). In RWD cars, if a lower gear is put in very quickly without a rev match or heel and toe, then the rear wheels will lock temporary, causing clutch/gearbox/drive shaft wear and bringing the car out of balance. It's like when you would pull the handbrake while entering a corner, resulting in snap oversteering. In FWD/AWD cars it's less dangerous in terms of car stability but it produces an excessive amount of clutch, gearbox, drive shaft and engine wear. A race car driver wants to be in the right gear with slightly applied throttle before corner apex or even earlier, so he has to find a way to finish everything he needs to (slowing down, putting the gear in he needs, coupling the engine with the wheels) as fast AND as smooth as possible. Heel and toe is the solution! Rev matching is a good technique to reduce clutch/gearbox wear (if done correctly) while driving in normal traffic every day :) Greets from Germany

V8Roehrldrifter I just got a 5.0Mustang gt for my first manual and sometimes I'd down shift and the wheels would lock a split second this explains alot what you said
@V8Roehrldrifter
@V8Roehrldrifter 5 жыл бұрын
@@jebasun02 Exactly, now imagine this happens when you are on the limit and about to enter a corner at 100+mph, not funny. The reason for the wheel lock: The rear wheels are connected to the engine (and the tarmac) while in gear with released clutch pedal. You drive 50mph in 4th gear for example, the rear wheels are turning suitable to this speed and the engine runs at 2500rpm. Now you press the clutch pedal. The car is still moving 50mph, the rear wheels too (they are not connected to the engine now but still to the tarmac) but the engine is still at 2500rpm (even lower because the rpm drops when pressing the clutch pedal). You put 3rd gear in and release the clutch pedal quickly. There is a problem now, 2500rpm in 3rd gear isn't enough to spin the tires the suitable speed for 50mph, it needs way more engine rpm in 3rd gear to drive 50mph. The rear wheels are spinning too fast for the engine, the engine is spinning too slow for the rear wheels. But you connected those together by releasing the clutch pedal. Now the rear wheels tries to accelerate (because spinned by the tarmac) the engine to the right rpm for 50mph in 3rd gear but can't do it fast enough because of mass inertia of the engine. At the same time the engine slows down the rear wheels because its not spinning fast enough for those. The connection can't be hold anymore because of the different speeds, so it breaks at the weakest point. Fortunately the weakest point is the connection of the rear wheels to the tarmac, the wheels turns too slow for the tarmac which moves with 50mph under those wheels, thats why they loose grip and lock (they don't really stop turning but turns way slower than needed). This weakest point of connection in FWD and specially in AWD cars is often a different one. The clutch, drive shafts or even worse. You bypass this problem by rev matching or heel & toe. Sry for the text wall, i tried to explain it as good as i can in english.

Nicely done. I used to do this on my 1968 Etype where the brake was real close to the accelerator mainly for heel and toe while racing. I would sometime get in trouble after I downshifted and then tried a spirited acceleration out of the turn. The car would swing out of control from oversteer and the "open" differential and was a bear to get back on the road safely. It was a racing monster and I miss it.

Manual shifting in a Mustang GT or higher is work of beauty and complete driver experienced satisfaction. Many haters out there actually cannot drive a manual anyway if the truth be told. In a muscle car as in the newer Mustang's, speed is very important, however over the life of your Mustang ownership, the experience of driving a manual is a highly rewarding experience.

Why double clutch? Why not just hold the clutch in, rev, and put it in the gear you want (skipping neutral)?
@toasty4000000
@toasty4000000 6 жыл бұрын
Since posting above, I have discovered a reason, however it is a bit of a stupid reason. Basically, all modern consumer cars (read cars made after dinosaurs went extinct) with manual transmissions have some things called "synchronizers" inside. Literally, the job of the synchronizer is to make it so that you do not have to double clutch as explained in this video. However, as with anything, through use comes wear. Thus, double clutching is effectively like saying "I don't use my blinkers because I don't want my blinker bulbs to go out".
@Vauun
@Vauun 6 жыл бұрын
Double-clutching is used more often on work trucks and specialty transmissions. It's also helpful for when the synchros in a transmission are messed up. It also helps reduce wear by making your shifts smoother. It's also fun to do, which is as good of a reason as any. Maybe you should do some research before you say dumb things on the internet.
@toasty4000000
@toasty4000000 6 жыл бұрын
1) A professional driver of a work truck will not only never double clutch, but he will also not use the clutch at all, unless he his stopped/stopping. Of course, you would not know that because you're talking out of your ass. 2) In no way does double clutching make your shifts smoother, obviously you could improve at downshifting if that is your impression. 3) Certain people find a lot of stupid things to be fun, I find efficiency (removal of useless actions) to be fun 4) Nothing I said above was incorrect 5) Maybe you should do research before you say dumb things on the internet

The "select 3rd" part is easier when you do a full double clutch downshift. This is why double clutching is ever done to begin with; to help with the gearbox. Depending on your vehicle this is or is not important. 6th to 5th, doesn't matter. 6th to 3rd on the other hand is sometimes pretty harsh and/or takes a lifetime. That's all there is to it. No flat earth theories.
@eNC0REx3
@eNC0REx3 6 жыл бұрын
but why is it easier tho? if i clutch in neutral, it's the same as if I just kept the clutch pressed, isnt it? so why do i need to double clutch? i could just press the clutch down and keep it pressed, rev, put it in 3rd and release? that's my confusion, i don't see the need to release it in between...
@jbsuckssooo
@jbsuckssooo 6 жыл бұрын
@@eNC0REx3 maybe he meant that it's easier for the car, when you double clutch your transmission has the same rpm as your engine because it's connected while reving up, so you save the transmission which doesn't have to rev up using the synchro rings

It depends what you wanna do. If I want to reduce my speed I brake a little and shift down ( first gear more braking is necessarily since engine braking is strong) and release the clutch slowly and brake even more. If you want to accelerate like overtaking faster, I shift down but push the gas and slowly let go of the clutch, exactly like how you normally take off at first gear. It works fine but I don't know if that causes any unnecessary wear.

The most fun I ever had in a manual car was engine braking in my old 96 Saturn wagon with a muffler delete and a glass pack resonator. Dropping from 4th into 3rd around 45 mph without rev matching and coasting gave some of the nastiest exhaust pops I've ever heard lol.

I still don’t get the double clutch. If you want to do 6th to 3rd, just rev match like any downshift. It works. Just unnecessary imo

thats cause double clutching is for up shifting why he said that for down shifting is beyond me

@@rodriguezdelbydr double clutching is for up/down shifting an unsynchronized gearbox, and downshifting when skipping gears. If you don't double clutch when skipping gears you put a lot of stress on the synchros.
