As someone who learned 3D in the late 90s and early 2000s, written/KZbin tutorials used to treat people like they were learning a professional craft and that their time was valuable. Because the industry was way smaller and the barriers to entry were WAY higher (Maya cost $32,000+ at one point and you had to request the learning version be mailed to you on a DVD), most of the people creating content were industry professionals from Pixar/ILM/DNEG etc. So the quality was very high, but there was much less content. Since the prices of all 3D software have reduced dramatically over the years and programs like Blender have come along, the learning content market has exploded, but also become heavily diluted. The target audience has also changed dramatically. Now it's not just people in their 20's+ seriously building their career who learn 3D, it's literally anyone of any age for any reason. All that being said, I love that we have so much content around these days but I definitely skip people telling me this one HACK will do THIS to my work, lol.

I appreciate the candid overview. I too have fallen victim to clickbait-y thumbnails sometimes. Trust is a big part of it. Creators (including me) don't always _trust_ viewers to click play, so we go out of our way to coerce them to, even if they don't want or need the video. Viewers don't always _trust_ creators to be honest and upfront, so they're more tentative and jump away when it isn't what they expect. That's why I appreciate platforms like Mastodon or Patreon that level that playing field - fewer third-party incentives, little to no automated curation or algorithm to work with. Just creators and their communities, sharing and receiving. Yes, it takes more initiative and accountability from both sides. But the world could do well with more of those.

Glad you opened this conversation. It's such a tough balancing act of providing actionable value, tutorials, but also appealing to a larger audience. Buzz words like "Beginner", "Cinematic", or "Secret Tips" get the most clicks. As an artist it sucks to box in what you're doing to appeal to the masses. But only a super niche subset of the internet is going to click on a video titled "volumetric raycasting with procedural nodes in blender" for example. At the same time, I felt like I created such a good video, but the thumbnail isn't click baity enough. Constantly trying to find this balance of naming things that will allow blender users like myself to actually find the video, but also being vague enough to appeal to new users.
@01Beaker5 ай бұрын
I feel like the right balance is somewhere in the middle. If you just title a video, a basic descriptor of what the video has, a lot of people aren't going to be interested in clicking on it. Of course, if you go really clickbaity, that will turn a lot of more mature people away. You've got to find the right balance to name something that'll inform, but also intrigue people to actually be interested in clicking on the video. Your IES title could be something like "Using IES Lights to Improve Your Renders" because it still introduces what the video is going to be talking about and tells you why we're even talking about it and how it can be used by the end user and how it'll actually be a benefit to them.

If you go to the developer's showcase video, you'll see a comment from me saying the same thing. I was like "Do you want to remove all aesthetics from videos?" But after using it, I don't really feel like that's happening. Because I can whitelist channels that I think are okay. And for the rest of them, I usually think the edited versions are more interesting than the originals. Like this from Tom Scott: "The first jungle gym was meant to hack kids' brains" became "The first jungle gym was designed to help kids understand the 4th dimension" I often like these better. Not always, but often. I may be unique in that, so I wouldn't pressure anyone into using DeArrow. But for people like me, it's great. And if more people do it, we get better crowdsourcing for titles.

@@robinsquares I can certainly understand. I've installed the plug-in and I'll test it out for a little while. I'm more speaking towards the request to other KZbinrs, rather than the plugin itself. But it is all down to the end user and what what they prefer when scrolling on KZbin. 😀 Ps, love your vids!

Dude! I really like this. As a youtuber I too struggle with thumbnails and the balance of clickbaityiness and truth. I often opt out for the truth because I can't bare the shame of obvious clickbait, but then later I think, could I have written it in another way and get just a little bit more views??? Anyway, I'm drunk now, but I'll watch this again tomorrow. It deserves another view! Cheers mate! ❤😊🎂

The main issue is that most of the Blender people on KZbin trying to teach complex topics like lighting and animation, are simply not very good themselves, frankly. There is not enough professional content for Blender. We just have a lot of course grifters and addon affiliate marketers.

I started learning Blender in 2019. Over the years, I've watched fewer and fewer Blender channels/videos, partly because I've learned enough to spend more of my time making than learning. The second reason is because I've learned enough to become jaded by the clickbait trash that teaches either nothing or, worse, bad/lazy practices. So much of it is just the exact same video made over and over again by different channels. I just stumbled on your channel today while procrastinating on my next personal project and ended up watching several videos back to back. Some of them shared concepts I'd never seen anywhere else before (the faked IES profiles was a really nifty idea that I will certainly use, and I made your camera rig for future use). Anyway, I just wanted to say, good on you for striving to make better legitbait instead of bad clickbait (especially by moving away from objectifying hypersexualized feminine anatomy). I rarely subscribe to new channels, but I genuinely look forward to seeing what you post in the future! And I hope your channel continues to grow because you're making high quality content that isn't purely repackaged tips we've all seen 100 times before. Cheers :)

Funny thing is that I only saw one other video before subscribing to your channel. Then I wanted to see what else you had made, as the other one was really high quality, and I came across this one. The clickbait title made me almost unsubscribe, but, it was just too on the nose. Little did I know that not only were you ridiculing the very concept, but I learn of a community driven project that solves my frustration elsewhere. Thanks!

I'm totally fine with a new video upload being all clickbaity for the first few days to get that new video traction going, but after like a week it should change to something more accurate and easy to search up later when it comes time to rewatch and apply the video contents 🤔 Think it would also help those who want to curate a playlist to recommend to learners to bring more attention when it's most needed.

Thank you for your video. I'm not a fan of that kind of marketing either. First, it happened with Smeaf, and then I noticed the same style in Kaizen videos. It seems like there's more packaging than 'product' itself. More clickbaits and meme's than actual value. Too bad because I like them both.
