All gorgeous options!! You have chosen the perfect backgrounds for each of those collage pieces. Before I ordered your horse pattern, I made a mini version just to see if I would enjoy the technique (which I do immensely!!). I decided to use fabric ink to make the background for my mini horse. I watered the ink down and did a color wash. It turned out great for my small project. I realized I have been collecting books (one of yours!) and fabric and art supplies for years and they are all coming together in this wonderful artistic technique which you have inspired me to practice. I have lots of fabric and thread and a good quilting machine which are all being utilized. I have made tons of traditional quilts but was losing my motivation. I'm so happy to have this new outlet in these crazy days. You are a great teacher! After I complete the horse, I think my next project will be your woodlands set. Thanks for your inspiration and best wishes in all your endeavors. Debbie

if I have a collaged bird that I'm putting on a single background piece, would it be better to quilt the background separately first, then add the bird and quilt it when it's in place? or just fuse the bird and quilt all at once?

No~ I would recommend fusing the bird to the background and then quilting the whole top as one piece.
