Hey guys! If you're experiencing 2 days of battery, another tip is to just RESET the watch to factory settings - I didn't mention this in the review, but it helped A LOT! There must be an app constantly draining the battery for some reason - this reset will help you fix that. Try it and let me know! :)

I just bought my galaxy watch 5 days ago. So far I've only had to charge my phone once. Straight out the box I wore it for 3 and 1/2 days and the battery was right around 30% when I put it on the charger. On the next full charge should I run down the battery all the way down before I charge it again. I just want to try and keep the battery healthy and strong, just so I can wear it for the next few more years.

Good tips. Lithium Ion does not respond well to overcharge or over-discharge. Avoid both extremes for the best battery life. This is the reason that your new phone/ watch probably had 1/2 to 3/4 battery life when you bought it. If you really want to prolong battery life do *not* drain it too low and avoid charging it to full (most people find it too inconvenient to not fully charge, but some phones and phone apps will allow you to charge to 90 to 95%)

Great overall tips BUT the last tip about battery draining to 10% etc will actually degrade your battery life over time and its better to charge the battery at higher %'s, the lower you go on the % of the battery the more you degrade it over time.

I just read an article about this in Popular Science Mag and they agree with Itay. They say charge often but never let it sit on charger at 100%. Also recommended letting completely drain once a month.

@@MikeWat There are two schools of thought for electronic devices; one is that it's a device, you're meant to use it. Use it till you need to charge it, and let it charge to full because you want to get as much use out of it as possible, at the detriment of the long term health of your device because by the time it's a serious issue and you can't maintain a charge, you'll have already reached end-of-life of the device and require a new one. The other method is that you should do your best to keep your battery in the best condition possible to make it last as long as possible, and to maintain that you should never let the battery hit the 10-20% extremes on either end, as they cause the most 'damage' to the battery health. Which means that if you are trying to 'optimize' your battery, you should do small incremental charges that keep the battery between 20% and 80%.
@MikeWat

Thank you Seiji, I will definitely keep that in mind and do that with my devices from now!

@@stevesoltz3102 I read a similar article and they agreed as well. But, they said for phones go ahead and leave it on there, that modern smart phones have a throttling mechanism that allows it to only draw what it needs and not over charge. i'd be interested in which one is true, and if that applies to smart watches. my bet is probably not.

The 10% battery status when you start charging from is a good plan in my line of work were trained to do this with the equipment we use . ( a full cycle charge ) Its a way of keeping your battery healthy meaning extending the overall life of your battery to last year's to come . Also try start getting in the habit of charging it from a lower point say 5% . Too many people juice up before leaving the house on a 70% status onwards. All their doing is decreasing the life time of the battery Tip of the day !!! Also I forgot to add . Watch faces stored on the watch it self ....Only have a few that u prefer . Too many watch faces actually take up ram even if there not being used so to speak . Trust me ditch the faces u hardly use . You'll see a better battery performance

This is a myth, Lion batteries do not like to be over charged or over discharged. Just ask anyone in an electric car how they manage their battery as recommended from the manufacturer. (this even takes into account the EV has a much higher coulombic efficiency, so it's even worse on your device batteries)

Can you tell more about that Li-Pol battery reset method? Does it also increase the battery life overall? And why wait exactly at 10%? The watch usually notifies low battery at 15%. Is it supposed to reqch 10% to get that reset or it's your preference? Thanks in advance!

Just letting you know its actually just a myth stemming from Nickel-metal hydride battery technology (found in things like electric toothbrushes/ razors) where that technique would work. But Li-ion batteries are a different technology and don't have this 'memory' like Ni-mh batteries do. Best way to take care of a phone/ watch battery is to not let it drain below 15-20%. That will greatly increase the battery life. I guess what you do cant hurt though.. Nice review btw :)

My 42mm galaxy watch lasted around 2 days and a half (almost 3 days sometimes), it seems like after few charges and settings that I set for quite some time, it somehow learned the pattern and are able to optimized the battery life. Btw I do everyday an hour of activity tracking, bluetooth ON, the rest of connectivity are turned OFF, HRM set to frequent, used a dark watch face (Dashboard), AOD off and gesture on, few necessary notifications (Whatsapp mostly) and brightness set to 2.

Hi Rifaie, Can you tell me more about the activity tracker? I'm a runner and having trouble making it last 2 hours. I have turned the weather updates off, bixby off, location off. I still need Spotify, and my bluetooth headphones. I just need it to tell me each time I do a kilometre, but don't need the seconds ticking over on my watch face. How do I stop this but have the voice input? Also, I would like to be able to accept phone calls and use the watch as a stand alone phone when I run, but the battery can't handle it. Any suggestions? Samsung staff not helping.

Thanks for this video @Mike Wat. I've recently purchased a second hand S3 watch and the battery is good (around 2 days when used with Samsung Health features). Looking to optimise battery as I lost about 40% when using location services for a few hours! Love the watch face, was looking for a battery optimised one. Will definately use this and your other tips when I need location services next! Slightly annoyiong that to see app battery usage on my Gear app, you need to go into each app. I hope Samsung change this in the furture.

I decided to only connect via Bluetooth once or twice per day to sync because constant Bluetooth connection was actually draining my Note 9's battery twice as fast. I keep my watch on LTE now and get about 57 hours of regular use. And my phone can last ~a day and a half! I'm still experimenting with different settings, so hopefully I can get it to those 4 days Samsung said.

My fossil gen 5 was at zero in about 13 hours. I did change the face and some settings based on some suggestions and it might have added maybe a couple more hours. Instead of zero I'd have 15-20%. But I accidentally discovered something and now it's at about 35-45% in the same time frame. I bought a Qi charger for my phone and the power surge strip that's built into the desk organizer that I was using on my side table had a few different power bricks. Had an old samsung fast charger attached to the cable for the watch. Had an old LG charger for something and had an older Samsung non fast charger on my old Qi charger. I switched the fast charger for the new Qi charger for my phone and the slower charger for the watch. So yeah the watch does charge slightly slower. But I firmly believe it's a healthier charge and the battery seems more satisfied and thus, the watch now lasts longer. I have come to find out slower charging methods like Qi charging vs connected results in healthier and longer lasting batteries. If you look at how fast charging works, say qualcomms quick charge tech (2,3,4, etc) you'll find out that the charging speed drastically slows in the final 10-15%. This tells me they're worried about the battery life not only in terms of how long a charge will last, but also how many "recharges" out may have left. I'd bet if I just used a USB port someplace the watch would last even longer because it took longer to charge and the battery would feel more satiated. Try it.

Just an observation i made myself in the years of using electronics with rechargeable batteries. If u rarely fully charge your device, lets say, 70% of the time the device is below 50%. After years of use, the battery efficiency will decrease but what you will notice is, that when it is charged to 100%, the battery life seems to be alot longer above 50%. Once it reaches that mark the battery performance decreases. This is caused because physically, only certain areas of the cells have received extensive use. The rest, was only used 30% of the time. To answer your Question from my understanding, charging the phone at 10% or so will definitely make sure that the cells, that are used when the device has low battery are always at its best condition...eliminating the effect, that your device dies fast as soon as it has reached 10% which devices are known to have, if they arent fully charged and kept mostly at around 40% Battery life, tops. By the way, thanks for the info! :D

I appreciate you videos! They are very informative! Just one thing. You said to comment with ideas about charging patterns... You may already know this because you seem to be a very informed dude. However, in case you don't know I read somewhere that you shouldn't allow your phone to drop below 50% when discharging and don't allow it it charge above 90%. Now, I've seen a but of an improvement in doing this. Then again, I've also watched my father-in-law basically leave his S9 on the charger all day and his phone indicates that the battery life is something ridiculous like 2 days. Granted, he's older and doesn't use his phone very much. But I'm hesitant to do my phone this way...I just want my phone's battery to last a long time.

Hello! I haven't reviewed the S3 - however I can tell you the new galaxy watch is BASICALLY the S3 repackaged with a bigger battery BUT without MST. S3 should be great for use - nothing much has changed except for looks. In my research LTE seems to drain A LOT of battery, you'd only get 8-12 hours with it. So I wouldn't recommend it unless you reaaaaaalllly need it. Hope that helps bud!

Use plug provided if ur charging off computer or car raduo USB etc it can be slower (not 10 hours though..damn)....Mine charges in about 30 minutes to an hour depending on how flat it is.. but try turn off auto wake up it drains battery (always comes on when driving etc) I get 2 full days if I only use it for time and messages but 1 day if I'm playing around with it a lot.....you can turn off things like HR monitor so it's off permanently (this drains battery)..but definitely something not right with your device mate.....

You are making a huge mistake!! You can never discharge the battery that low, and by doing so you are killing the battery cycles. It is always recommended to charge the device when the battery is 50% or so. I have a Samsung Galaxy S8+ and even after 2y I am still able to have more than 24h battery without problems. The main problem with smartwatch, people think that it is a bloody mobile phone and install hundreds of apps and expect its battery to last a month, really???

Great tips Bro & glad to see you've done some research. 👍🏻👍🏻 but... you've gone from one extreme to the other? First you had practically everything on & now you've got bugger all on... lol. You've practically turned all the features off & sacrificed the good looking watch faces to gain an extra days battery on top of the 2.5 days you were getting. You don't need to go THAT far man. You said you were hoping to get 3 days out of it with AOD on, Brightness 3, Gesture Wake Up on & Heart Rate Monitoring set to Always. Based on those settings, I believe you'd only need to make a change to one of them in order to achieve the 3 days you were hoping for. You could: -Be a bit more sparing on the AOD, only use it when you're out & about. I get that its all about the real watch aesthetic (thats me too) but if you're selective about its use, you could get 3 days easily I believe. -Change your Heart Rate Monitoring to Frequent instead of Always. -Turn off Gesture Wake Up when you go to sleep. -Then as you pointed out here, if you turn Airplane Mode &/or Night Mode on before you go to sleep too, that would get you to 3 days also. Remember, you'd only need to do ONE of these things to get you to your 3 day goal, more than one will obviously get you more. This is all based on the settings you gave in your last video. I'm of the opinion that if you can't/don't use the features of the watch & can't enjoy it, whats the point in having a smart watch? Couple things I might add to this short story... AOD watch faces automatically default to 15% OPR anyway so unless you are REALLY trying to be miserly on the battery a plain old 10% watch face isn't really worth the sacrifice I reckon? That is if, like me, you really like using AOD. I only use it when I'm going out for dinner or to a mates house though cos I like showing it off... lol. There is a battery monitoring app you can get called Battery Graph that I would highly recommend installing too. In lieu of Samsungs constant updates that have the capacity to make or break the watch COMPLETELY from update to update, this app allows you to monitor your battery performance a little closer without having to go into the Galaxy Wearable App. It also lets you nail down on a particular app or watch face that may be draining your power more quickly too, which is always a good thing. I think its a paid app but I can't recommend it highly enough. Keep the good vids coming & lay off the shit ones yeah... lol! 😆😉😛

Hi Steven. I've had the watch for 10 weeks now and it's been sent off 3 times and returned 3 times, every time telling me there is nothing wrong with it. Even though on one occasion it died after 2 hours!!! The battery has never lasted even one day in my case. Samsung said they replicated what I did. Hilarious - they didn't even contact me to ask me what I did, so how can they replicate it? Anyway, this is really great advice about the battery monitoring app, it may be the solution to my problem. Samsung refuse to change my battery and it's obviously under warranty. They blamed me for what I'm using. The samsung staff at the service desk said even if I was using everything it should still last more than 24 hours. Bloody terrible.

So, basically- don't use the watch for anything it was designed to do. Seriously- WTF. Appreciate the video- but they need to tweak this $hit so you don't have to find work-arounds to normal functionality.
