I did the Inlet box (3rd option) several years agoa and although it is more complicated to install, it is set up to run my entire 2400 s/f house using a 35K watt tri-fuel generator. I tested it and although I didn't turn on everything in the house, it worked flawlessly with the normal power draining things on including the HVAC split unit, 2 freezers and the fridge. I have also swithced the entire home to LEDs for less power requirements. Obviously, in a power grid failure you won't run everything as normal, but having tri-fuel capabilities gives you more options. Thanks of the videos!

@@mae2759 I 100% agree. And it's quite frustrating. I planned on doing this with my furnace till told it was against code. I'm not clear on how it's dangerous to plug an appliance that uses typically under 1000w into an electrical outlet.

@@mae2759I can’t remember where I’ve seen it, but the only explanation of why domestic appliances are direct wired is for safety. Not everyone understands how this is setup, and an unaware person might unplug the furnace to plug in something else, thereby not having heat, or whatever. I know this is probably not you, but codes are for worst-case scenarios.

My last boss has one setup; it's far from bulletproof or maintenance proof 😉. The permits required too are a headache. We tried to get one setup for our office and because we were in a multitenant building we were told the main gas line would have to be increased to keep our 20 server data center running. ... Headache to say the least. At least with a portable genset: just do the oil change and maintenance when you do a season tune on your lawn mower. 😁

I installed the EZ Generator switch that came wired for a bonded neutral and tested the setup using a gas generator that has a bonded neutral. As expected, the furnace worked correctly. Just bought a power station that has a floating neutral. The EZ Generator switch needs to be rewired if using a floating neutral generator. The furnace seems to operate correctly with either the gas generator or the power station with the switch wired for a bonded neutral. I bought a neutral bonding plug but my tester states there is still an open ground. What are my options? I can’t see rewiring the switch when changing from the power station to the generator.

In deciding on what generator I needed for a few critical circuits in my little 1250 sq. ft. house, I tested my York gas furnace and was very surprised to see that it used a whopping 1220w at 10.1 amps when running heat. The blower itself used 930w at 7.4 amps. My dad’s Trane furnace in a same size house only used 695 when running heat. Any reason mine was using twice the wattage of his?
