You sir are a lifesaver! Great demo of the back focus adjustment. I would not have known about this when I rent this camera tomorrow. Assumed (wrongly) fixed lenses did not need adjusting. Perfect explanation of the diffraction problem. I have been talking about this to students for years but this absolutely demonstrates it perfectly. I always thought that you had to go smaller than f11 for it to be a major problem. Happy to stand corrected.

Thanks for this well thought-out video, Doug. It's a nice rebuttal against uninformed opinions on this excellent camera. Folks wanting grab-n-go without any learning curve might want a simpler camera, but this camera is absolutely excellent, and I've achieved so many great results that we bought a second one for documentary and live events in run and gun situations. Agreed on all fronts!

@@DougJensenVortexMedia a couple of quick questions. My other camera is an EX-3. The EX series seems to have a sticky zoom issue where it's not a smooth movement..it sort of sticks at the beginning of the zoom. I've noticed this with other EX cameras we've bought or rented, so it's not just the ones we own. Does this camera have a smooth zoom?......2nd question: Some of the reviews stated when using a remote zoom you can't get slower speeds. We do a lot of 3 camera concerts where that's important feature. Do you have any knowledge of that?...Final question: what would be a good 7" field monitor? Thanks and keep up the great content!

@@ricklavon3632 Hi Rick, I would have to admit that the servo zoom control on the Z280 is not as good as I would wish it to be. I can usually get smoothly-ramped starts and stops to my zooms, but it takes more concentration and effort that I would like. Of course, I have to keep in mind that the entire Z280 camcorder costs 1/6 of what the Fujinon 24x lens on my Z750 costs, so I have to cut the lens some slack. But yeah, the bottom line is that I do wish it was better. I've tried three different external zoom controllers and they all performed about the same, so I doubt you will find one that suddenly makes things better. I don't have a suggestion for a small 7" monitor. It is not something I own or wold ever need so I don't have any suggestions. Personally, I find the flip-out LCD and OLED at the rear of the camera to be more than adequate for normal shooting. And when I do need a monitor, the minimum acceptable size is 17". Anything smaller than that is of no use to me.

@@DougJensenVortexMedia Hi Doug- I am really liking the Z280 so far. I have found that the rocker zoom is not sticky at all. So that is an immediate improvement to the EX-3. I wound up getting the Shinobi SDI on-board monitor because we needed something for a concert configuration and the other cameraman preferred one. I also got the Manfrotto remote zoom. Does the remote zoom depend on the internal camera settings?...Right now it is on variable with high at 8 and low on 3, which was the default.

I made that pan bar myself from the handle of a screwdriver I got at Lowes. I love it. Incomprehensible that you never mentioned the Z280's 3-chip sensor as a selling point. That's its major distinguishing feature. Doesn't it make post-grading unnecessary, thereby speeding up/simplifying post-production workflow? Personally, I can't wait for them to finally make a "full-frame" 3-chip camcorder to shut those cine-snobs up for good, who are just so in love with shooting video using photography equipment.

Thanks for this Doug. I’d watched this video before but have come back to ask a question specifically related to your discussion on diffraction. You’ve been saying the thing for years; I’ve heard you discuss this in your old DVDs that I happen to have. Is this phenomenon specific to 3chip camcorders? The reason I wanted to ask is because still photographers will frequently give advice counter to what you’re saying. They like to stop a lens down to an f-stop like f8-f13 to hit a typical sweet spot and achieve maximum sharpness; especially when photographing wide vista landscapes. I’m not disagreeing with you - just interested to hear your comments on this. Thanks, John.
@DougJensenVortexMedia
@DougJensenVortexMedia Жыл бұрын
Hi John, potential issues caused by diffraction are not unique to three-chip camcorders -- or even video cameras in general. Diffraction is a potential problem for all cameras and all lenses. The reason is it more closely associated with video cameras is because historically video cameras have had smaller sensors, and smaller sensors are more susceptible to diffraction. And the more a lens is stopped-down (smaller iris hole) the more that diffraction will degrade the picture quality. The Z280 has 1/2" sensors and the Z190 has 1/3" sensors so that means they are much more susceptible to diffraction than a camera that has a full-frame or Super35 sized sensor. Both sensors are many times larger than those found in the Z280 and Z190. Thus my advice to shoot with the lens wide open as much as possible. Even though you might not notice a problem in most situations until you got down around f/5.6 or smaller. It's just good practice to shoot wide open as often as possbile to avoid diffraction and achieve the shallowest depth-of-field that a certain camera/lens combo can create. The electronic variable ND filter found on the Z280 and Z190 makes it super easy to set the iris wide-open and do all our exposure adjustments with the variable ND. It is a game changer. A serious photographer shooting landscapes is probably going to be using a FF or S35 camera so they can get away with stopping their lens much farther down before diffraction becomes a problem. So if they want to get maximum DoF, stopping down to f/8 -f/16 may make sense. But with that said, I mostly shoot with FF cameras right now and I still keep my lens wide open 90% of the time. I hope that helps answer your questions. You can probably do a Google search for diffraction and get a better explanation! 🙂

Doug thanks for the great info, I previously had a Sony PMW X160 and there were some great aspects I liked about that camera especially the sharp pictures and wonderful low light capability. Similar to the EX range they just blow other brands out of the water in this regard. Is it fair to say the Z280 is a 4K version of the x160/180 range for the layout looks almost identical. One thing though that put me off the x160 and that I hope has improved is how that camera handled blue LED in stage show filming. I found them really washed out. In fact I sold my x160 for this sole reason. I quired this problem with a chap in Ireland who like yourself also uses Sony's higher end Sony ENGs like the 400/500 range, and he suggested this blue led light issue is a common problem with Sony cameras. In fact I've seen news footage of Police/ambulances and the blue flashing lights have this weird sort of sparkle to them. Guessing they are Sony's. Can't say I remember this issue with the Ex1s but thats a long time ago now and pre LEDs being used so much in stage shows. Thanks Doug, been watching your videos for a long time so its nice to be chatting to you.

@DougJensenVortexMedia
@DougJensenVortexMedia 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Jason, that is a very difficult question for someone else to answer for you. I wouldn't take my advice no matter which direction I told you to jump! :-) As I have said many times before, I still believe the FS7 offers the most bang for the buck of any camera in history. The Z280 comes in a close second, but I still think the FS7 is the better camera. But that does not necessarily mean it is the right choice for everyone. The two biggest selling points of the FS7 are shallow depth-of-field and true CINE EI S-LOG mode. And the biggest selling points of the Z280 are the 17x lens, simplicity, and speed of operation. I would say you need to decide which of those things are most important for you and the work you do. Either camera is capable of great results. Fortunately, I find it more than worthwhile to have both!

Hey Doug, I loved the video, it was really nice to see an informed take on the Z280. I was curious if you wouldn't mind offering some feedback on deciding between two setups for recording in 4k60 (and I apologize as its a fairly uninformed question). I'm going to be filming martial arts competitions, and wanted to set up two fixed position cameras at different angles to record the matches. I was considering the z280s because I want deeper depth of field to avoid auto focus blurring a shot as the action changes, and as they won't be actively monitored while filming, I thought the smaller sensors on the z280 might help with that. However, since I don't really need the zoom lens and have good control over the lighting, I was wondering if I might be better off with the fx6s and a fixed prime lens. Any insight would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Thank you for the compliments. I really, really try not to recommend specific cameras for other people because there are so many factors to consider. But you have explained your circumstances and thought process pretty well, so I will take a chance and tell you what i think. If I was in your shoes, I'd rather have the Z280s. The zoom lenses will give you more options for framing. The deeper DoF will actually help produce sharper images. I think the Z280 has overall better picture quality. You have far more control over the "look" of the image to fine-tune the kind of picture you want. Good FF lenses for the FX6 would be expensive to buy. The Z280s would be easier to use. The Z280s have viewfinders. The Z280s are more versatile cameras, should you ever decide to use them for some other kind of shooting. Anyway, that is my thinking and what I would do. I hope it helps.

Excellent video Doug. Two questions: 1. Looking at the specs I see that the camera is capable of a solid 600mbps at XAVC-l QFHD. This would seem to be one of the selling points for this model compared to cheaper models in the PXW-Z line. Do you find this extra data is noticeable in terms of a better image produced? I have the computer processing power to handle the extra bit rate data, so the question is more about the qualitative value the higher bit rate. 2. I don't doubt your knowledge and I'm sure you are correct, but your explanation about the refraction issues when stopped down seems counter intuitive to me, and counter to my experience on the dslr and cinema camera side. Specifically with almost all my stills lenses, including very good professional ones, the image is generally softest at the most wide open setting e.g. 2.8, and then gets sharp a notch or two more closed e.g. 4.0. This is also true with cinema lenses. Is this a function of sensor size or camcorder geometry or?
@AW-go1tf
@AW-go1tf 4 жыл бұрын
Ok. I partly answered my first question by finding your Z280/Z190 split screen video. The 280 was significantly better. I'm not clear though how much of that difference is the sensor and / or the lens differences. I'm assuming you recorded both those at the same codec / bit rate / fps. so that may not directly address how much of an advantage the high data rate would be (too).

You're only going to see a difference between XAVC-I (10-bit 4:2:2) and XAVC-L (8-bit 4:2:0) if you're going to grade your footage. If you don't care about color grading, enhancing footage in post, or chroma keying, then I think it would ne impossible to see a difference with the naked eye between the same camera recording two different codecs. But when you compare the Z280 recording XAVC-I and the Z190 recording XAVC-L you're definitely going to see some difference whether you grade or not. The difference is between two camera where one is simply a better camera regardless of the codec being used.

Oh yes, 8-bit 4K is plenty good enough for stock footage. The key is to get the footage as close to perfect (finished) in-camera so you don't have to manipulate it too much in post -- because that is where you'd see the difference between 8-bit and 10-bit. Shoot with a good custom Picture Profile, expose perfectly, have a correct white balance, and shoot some interesting content and you will have success with stock.

If you had asked me about the CX350 before you bought it I would have steered you away from it. In 2019 I was involved in testing and evaluating various cameras for a high-budget sports/reality show that was produced in Fiji. The CX350 was one of the cameras that was in the mix, but it was eliminated in the very first test due to poor low-light performance. The difference was gigantic between the CX350 and the Z280. The show eventually went with 25 Sony Z280s, 30 Sony Z90s, and 22 Panasonic Varicams. I don't have any special insight into Sony's plans for upcoming cameras, and if I did, I couldn't discuss what I know anyway. But I would be really surprised if Sony releases a replacement for the Z280 anytime in the next couple of years. The pandemic put new camera development on the back burner and Sony can't even meet demand for the Z280 and other cameras right now. Plus I don't know what they would change or do differently on the next generation of Z280. Personally, I'd like to see 120 fps in 4K. touch-screen focus tracking, and the option to use Picture Cache and S&Q Motion simultaneously (only the FX6 can do it right now), but other than that, I can't really imagine what they would improve or features they could add.

Hi Matt, I have suggested to Sony several times that they need to release a EX3-style version of the Z280. Or mayb a PMW-320 style Z280. I think that would be exactly the camera you would like to have. But, I don't see that camera on the horizon. I hate the FS7 handle and would never use it, so if you're looking for something like that, I can't be of help. The Z280 has a grip on the side of the lens like an ENG camera should have and it works just fine for holding the camera. The issue with turning the Z280 into a good handheld/shouldermount ENG camera is not the grip -- it is the placement of the viewfinder. Having the the viewfinder at the rear of the camera makes it impossible to use the the viewfinder with the camera resting on your shoulder. So that means the flip-out LCD must be used as a viewfinder and that means it needs to have a loupe. I have also suggested to Sony that they release an FS7-style viewfinder loupe that could be attached to the Z280 to turn it into a quasi-shouldermount camera. I have experimented with the kind of setup and it actually worked very good. I also suggested to Hoodman that they design a custom loupe for the Z280. I even met with one of the Hoodman owners at the Sony booth at NAB 2019 to show them exactly what was needed. But I never followed up and I don't know what they did about it. They seemed to think that one of their existing loupes would do the trick but I never tried it myself. So the bottom line is that Z280 makes a pretty good quasi-shouldermount camera if you can find a way to rig a loupe over the LCD. You don't need a cage and you don't need a grip. You just need a 3rd party viewfinder or loupe for the LCD panel. Good luck.

What if I want deep focus? Can adjusting the detail settings counter this softening problem? What if I downscale 4K to HD in post, would that help the issue? One final question. Does your class go into the best settings for the video-look as well? I know I want deep focus & a high frame rate, but I don't want to end up coupling those with other cinema-look settings, just bc I'm not familiar with them & I end up blindly following cinema-look advice. The colours not looking muted is important to me, hence why a camcorder with a chip for two primary colours & green is of interest to me. I noticed for instance you called the sensor(s) "small", comparing it to a single 35mm one. But 3CMOS sensors are in a class of their own. The largest I've heard of is 2/3".

Shooting with a deep depth-of-field is no problem at all for the Z280. The 1/2" sensors make that the easiest way to shoot with the Z280. The camera has literally dozens of paint menus with thousands of combinations of settings you can can program YOUR camera for a very wide variety of looks. If one person wants vibrant colors and strong contrast, they can have it. If someone else wants more muted colors and a little different look, that is possible too. The camera is extremely flexible. I don't understand your questions or concerns about detail settings or downscaling. You can program the camera for whatever looks good to you.

Hi Doug. Another great.video. I had not looked at the Z280 before, as I was going for at least a 1” sensor camera (e.g. Z150) as my step into 4K that gives some cinematic reduced depth of field. The Z280 has some great features and codecs. It is a shame that is uses expensive, and now redundant SxS or XQD media, to be able to use all the codecs. Sony’s lineup is well overdue for a refresh. Do you know of anything hiding in the wings, like a camcorder with the sort of specs that the new A7S has in mirrorless?
@DougJensenVortexMedia
@DougJensenVortexMedia 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Raymond, the differences in depth of field between the Z280 and camera's with 1" sensors is not nearly what you'd expect. For one thing, the Z150 has an f/4 lens while the Z280 has an f/1.9 lens. That difference right there wipes out most of the difference. Also, the Z280 is a far superior camera that produces better overall images that more than compensates for any slight increase in DoF. Don't fall victim to the belief that shallow depth of field is most important. If you disagree, then you should be looking at camras with Super35 or Full-frame sensors anyway. Like I said, the visual difference between 1/2" and 1" is not that big. As for a new camera coming out, you might consider the Sony FX6 when it arrives in a few months. It should have many of the specs of an A7 but in a camcorder body.

There's no question in my mind that a genuine video camcorder is a better tool for shooting video. Although DSLRs and mirrorless cameras can be used to shoot video, that is clearly not their primary purpose. The analogy I use is that I can pound a nail with a screwdriver if I want to, but a hammer will allow me to get a lot more work done in a lot less time. I've seen very nice footage from a GH5 so I don't question that the video quality is good enough for stock footage, but it is not a tool that I personally would want to work with. Other people may feel differently and that is their right.

Hey Doug, I know this is kind of a difficult question to answer, but I am currently an FS5 owner, but I'm looking to upgrade to a camera that can shoot 4K in 10bit, and I am torn between waiting and getting the FX9 when it comes out, or going the more economical route and getting the Z280. I primarily shoot sports documentary content, interviews of players, and some on field content. I know that both cameras are vastly different (full-frame vs 3-chip half inch) but part of me thinks that the Z280 would be more useful for type of shooting that I do, but then again, I don't know how much I would miss the look of a large sensor camera, especially with it's newer color science/profile. You mention that you ended up using your z280 a lot more than your other large sensor cameras. How do you think the Z280 compares to my current FS5? Is it a higher quality camera? Would I be happier with the picture quality if I made the jump to it rather than going for another large sensor camera? Also, have you had a chance to use the FX9? If so, do you see yourself using it more than your z280?
@DougJensenVortexMedia
@DougJensenVortexMedia 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that is a tough question to answer for somebody else. Between the Z280 and the FS5 there is no doubt that I prefer the Z280. For picture quality they are probably about the same, but the Z280 is so much easier to use and packed with all the traditional XDCAM features and functions that aren't included on the FS5. To me, the FS5 is almost a glorified consumer camera with it's very limited capabilities. And there is no way you're going to find a 17x f/1.9 lens for the FS5. The Z280 is all about versatility and zoom range. Your choice really ought to be between the Z280 and the FS7 because they are almost the same camera except for the sensor size and lens mount. Really, they are brothers much more so than the FS5 is to the FS7. So that makes your decision really down to small senors and 17x lens, or a big sensor and nice shallow depth of field. That's what you have to decide. And then you will know which camera is right for you. Yes, I've used the FX9 and I've posted 10 videos of test footage. Here is one of them and you can find links to the other nine videos in the description. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eIGtZIhjptOchrc In my opinion, the FX9 is very nice but is basically a Full Frame version of the FS7Mark2. If you don't care about FF then get an FS7Mark2 and get shooting.

Hi Andy, thank you for the compliments. I generally do not like to recommend cameras for other people because there are too many factors that need to be taken into consideration, such as budget, size, weight, intended use, level of operator experience, etc. Also, I have never used any of the Nikon and Fuji cameras you have mentioned and know very little about their video capabilities. But with all that said, I am strongly against the use of DSLRs and most mirrorless cameras for professional video production. In general, most of those are cameras that just happen to shoot video as an afterthought. A video CAMCORDER is always going to be the better choice for the day-in- and day-out needs of professional video production. They offer better ergonomics, better viewfinders, better codecs, better audio quality, XLR inputs, and many other functions and features that a lot of people don't think about but still make a big difference. Things like better zebras, peaking, timecode, custom clip naming, more customizable paint menus, and the list goes on and on. Also, the rolling shutter problems of DSLRs and most mirrorless cameras, that is most visible with longer lenses, disqualify them from consideration for shooting wildlife. The Z280 is an excellent camera for wildlife and stock footage plus all other kinds of professional video production. It's not designed for shallow depth-of-field, but other than that, it beats all other cameras in it's price range. The Z280 is essentially a FS7 Mark II with smaller sensors and a 17x lens. A great camera. The Z190 is also pretty good, but does not perform very well in low light so I don't recommend it to most people. Another camera you might want to consider is the Sony Z150. I've shot some nice wildlife footage with my Z150. vimeo.com/207652687 I hope that helps.

@@andyobrien6263 I think you'd have a tough time using the viewfinder on the X-T3 when shooting wildlife. Shooting moving wildlife or any telephoto action smoothly while tracking focus would be next to impossible. Have you ever noticed that almost all DSLR and mirrorless video you see (which can look very good) is shot wide angle? Yes, the Z280 is still the top performing camera in this category, but I wouldn't classify it as "prosumer". The Z280 is a full-featured professional ENG camcorder that has no rivals. It is basically a smaller version of Sony's $35,000 Z750 camcorder (which I also own and use with the Z280). As for the dynamic range, it is certainly good enough to create spectacular images,but I don't know what the actual number is. I don't think Sony has said what the dynamic range is and I don't have the necessary equipment to measure it myself. BTW, the Z280 has been out for three years, but the pandemic put many things on hold, including camera manufacturing and development of new models. So you really have to look at the camera as being only a year or so old. And to be honest, besides 120 fps in 4K and even better face/eye detect AF, I don't know what features Sony could add to a new model that would matter very much.

I own several of the official Sony BP-series batteries because they go back 12 years to the EX1, EX3, F3, FS7, FS5, etc. And that is the only brand of BP batteries I've used, so I can't comment on other brands. But you'll want to be sure any other batteries communicate properly with the camera. BTW, I use Anton/Bauer v-mount batteries for everything else (lights, monitors, bigger cameras, etc.) but Anton/Bauer does not make any BP batteries.

@@DougJensenVortexMedia Do any of your videos talk about media recommendations and have any links of what/where to buy? I just realized the 8TB worth of SD media is not usable. This seems like a whole mess to navigate and I probably need the ability to record 2 hours at less than 29.97 - most likely at 1080p but need to plan for 4k in the future. I mainly record speakers and presenters. Final output for my recordings is 1080i. Thanks again!

@DougJensenVortexMedia
@DougJensenVortexMedia 2 жыл бұрын
Kevin, I don't recommend using a computer monitor for editing. I edit using Premiere and DaVinci Resolve and I output a true video signal to two regular video monitors. One is a professional Sony 17" production monitor and the other is a 60" Sony Bravia. If you are color grading or making any adjustments to the picture you need to be monitoring the program signal on a video monitor -- NOT a computer monitor. Here's the test: If you can put your mouse over the image, then you are not monitoring a true video signal. Blackmagic makes several UltraStudio devices for getting a true video signal out of your computer with Resolve, Premiere, Catalyst Browse, and other apps. This is the cheapest one: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1578062-REG/blackmagic_design_ultra_studio_monitor_3g.html?sts=pi&pim=Y A big advantage of outputting the program video signal to a real video monitor is that you don't have to worry about jumping through a bunch of hoops to calibrate the monitor. You just set it up to color bars and you're done. If you want more information about how I monitor my video in post, I cover that topic extensively in my Resolve training video. vimeo.com/ondemand/resolve

Hi Tim, it sounds like the location where you are shooting is simply too dark for the camera. All cameras have a limit on how they can handle low-light situations, and it sounds like you have exceeded the Z190's capabilities. If that is the case, there is nothing you can do except to add lighting.

Hi Phoebe, you are are 100% sure you have configured the camera according to the instructions and it still doesn't work, then my advice would be to reset the camera to factory default mode and start over from scratch. But before you do that, go though the process one more time because I think you must have missed something in the steps.

Hi Doug, Very interested in this camera! Do you know if it still has issues with the Lanc port for remote zoom control? There saying it is unable to go at a slower speed. Also, do I wait for somethin new to come out beside the z280?
@DougJensenVortexMedia
@DougJensenVortexMedia 3 жыл бұрын
Hi MIke, I'm not aware of any "issues" with the LANC port. No camera with a built-in lens is going to offer the same precision and performance of a true ENG lens that costs more than the whole Z280. It is what it is. I have learned to live with its limitations and I don't believe there will be any forthcoming changes or improvements via a firmware update. And I'm sure some LANC controllers will work better than others, but I am not in a position to test various controllers or make recommendations beyond what I talk about in my video. As for something new coming out to replace the Z280? I would be shocked if there was anything remotely like the Z280 to come out in the next couple of years. There is really nothing to improve on at this point in time.

Compared to the FS5, where does this rank? I need a secondary camera and see that the FS5 has dropped in price.
@DougJensenVortexMedia
@DougJensenVortexMedia 4 жыл бұрын
The Z280 is a vastly superior camera to the FS5. Not even close. Not just in terms of picture quality but also in professional features and functions. The only thing the FS5 offers is shallow depth-of-field. If you can live without that, the Z280 beats it hands down. The FS5 was designed to give DSLR shooters a camcorder alternative with minimal features. On the other hand, the Z280 was designed to be a miniature version of Sony's high-end professional ENG camcorders like the Z450, Z750, and even the FS7.

Hi Saby, to the best of my knowledge Sony does not publish how many stops of dynamic range the Z280 offers. I do not have the necessary charts to measure it myself, however, it is my understanding that is is little over 12 stops.
