What if we could solve the climate and housing crises at the same time? Financial institutions have pledged trillions to transform the economy and accelerate climate action -- but right now, that money is not flowing at the speed it needs to, says sustainable investing expert Veronica Chau. Illuminating the links between climate change and affordable housing, she suggests a playbook of moves to start mobilizing big money and transform climate financing challenges into opportunities.

I think it's most efficient in these kinds of spaces to narrow in on smaller topics that people can focus on to take action. But you're totally right...that's another way we need to be mobilizing our governments...

A good summary of arguments on how the private and public sector can be "motivated" to work on climate action. The focus on people needing to push them is placing the blame a little squarely on individuals though. Simultaniously to working on lobbying and placing out own assets in line with our morals, governments and certain cooperations have been profiting off exploiting the world, former colonies etc. and should re-invest some of these profits from places they have extracted them (Congo, Guatemala, Bangladesh). It cannot be squarely on the individuals to work and clean up the gread of the few (though it does play a part)

One difference I've noticed between the U.S. and Canada with regard to housing is the mortgage tax deduction in the U.S. results in the building of much bigger houses which require more resources -materials, labor and energy. The planet can no longer afford this status seeking nonsense. I'm encouraged by the tiny house movement which I plan to be a part of when I finally decide to settle down.

Summary of talk: banks and their private equity holders that make their money by financing fossil fuels need tax payers to guarantee they won't lose money by investing in sustainable energy. No mention of divesting in the industries that are causing the problem. Could it be they are owned by the same folks that want guarantees? Convince your local politicians to change zoning laws somehow...so banks and investors get whatever they want(?) before they finance green, affordable housing? Demand investors to change their portfolios to be sustainable before you give them your money

Better use those money to solve economic inequality and give people who wish to have children opportunity for it. Retirement will be old myth soon if nothing will change. People are working 12 hr/7 day and barely making living. That's much bigger problem.

And how much money will be needed to keep fixing the climate in perpetuity Veronica? Since I'm sure you know the stellar evolution of the Sun has (always) been increasing 10% brightness per billion years and will continue this pace till it radically accelerates once it begins fusing helium

Hopefully in a billion years (if we are still around, lol) we will have figured out a lot more about ways to make cleaner energy. Also cleaner ways to manufacture, etc. If not, then there's no hope anyway, lol. Not that I'm agreeing with anything said in this presentation, I left after a minute as it sounded like it was going to turn into rah rah all the little people need to spend their money on this while all the rich people will get richer. @@Geekabibble so this is a TEMPORARY "solution" how temporary? 5 years or 5000 years? and is the $4 trillion annual also temporary? Maybe if we move to hovels we could do better and spend $40 trillion annually? until HOPEFULLY something improves? You do realize tho meantime a solar flare of large enough magnitude and direction is unpredictable unstoppable and can wipe out a thousand years of human "climate correction" in a week?

Not drop it, but it does need to be changed and have some more regulations. The very rich get richer and richer off the rest of the us. They are extremely selfish. Still building megahomes, mega-yachts, mega-jets etc while many people go without basic needs. And, the middle class gets smaller and has to tighten their belts. All so people who are disgustingly rich can have more money that they don't need.
