Also, is a reflex port the same as a bass port? And what is the advantage or disadvantage to front ported versus rear ported? I know part of it would affect the proximity you could put it against the wall.

Yes, provided it's bigger than your monitors it will extend your low end. I just hooked up my Yamaha HS8s sub after making this video and realizing I have HS7, and not HS8.
