Three-wheeler era (1967-1987)
Production of three-wheelers ceased in 1987 due to safety concerns: three-wheelers were more unstable than four-wheelers (although accidents are equally severe in both classes). The duration of the ban lasted 10-years and thus since 1997, manufacturers were free to once again manufacture and market three-wheelers. A ban on sales of new or used three-wheelers and a recall of all remaining three-wheelers has been proposed by the American Academy of Pediatrics. However, it was determined in a CPSC study that three-wheelers are no more dangerous than other ATV's. The ban lead to widespread thought that the machines are unregistrable, uninsurable, dangerous, and even illegal, but is false.
These safety issues with three-wheel ATVs caused all ATV manufacturers to upgrade to four-wheel models in the late 1980s, and three-wheel models ended production in 1988, due to consent decrees between the major manufacturers and the Consumer Product Safety Commission-the result of legal battles over safety issues among consumer groups, the manufacturers and CPSC. The lighter weight of the three-wheel models made them popular with expert riders. Cornering is more challenging than with a four-wheeled machine because leaning into the turn is even more important, to counterbalance the weight and keep the machine stable. Operators may roll over if caution isn't used at high speeds. The front end of three-wheelers obviously has a single wheel, making it lighter, and flipping backwards is a potential hazard, especially when climbing hills. Rollovers may also occur when traveling down a very steep incline. However, in most terrain with the proper riding technique and safety gear, accidents are not an issue. Three-wheelers take more time to learn to ride properly than other machines and require a different style that others as well; such as leaning to the inside of the turn and steering with the throttle. The key is to break traction with the rear tires and "power slide". The consent decrees expired in 1997, allowing manufacturers to, once again, make and market three-wheel models, though there are none marketed today. Recently, the CPSC has succeeded in finally banning importation of three-wheeled ATV's with attachments to bill HR4040. Many believe this is in response to Chinese manufacturers trying to import three-wheeled ATV's. The Japanese manufacturers were also behind this legislation, as they have been held responsible for years to provide ATV Safety training and to apply special labels and safety equipment to their ATVs while Chinese manufacturers did not. Three-wheelers can still be continued to be built and sold by American manufacturers if any chose to build them.

My girls got a dirtbike and 4 wheeler for early Christmas so my hubby found me a 1985 trike. I totally love it at the track! I've scared him and the kids enough that they've done everything they can to convince me to get a regular 4wheeler but i love my trike too much!

To the untrained eye, going that fast through a flat turn through the trees may not seem that big of a stunt when compared to the rest of the wheelies and the donuts, but to those who know... holy shit! Don't think I don't see the body english in play to keep that thing from flipping its ass and paralyzing the rider into the nearest birch.

+Neil Bolin I just put those new knobby tires on a few months ago. They made the bike a bit@h to corner. Too much grip! Would have looked much faster if I could've gotten the back end out! Hopefully they'll be better in the snow ;)

+Neil Bolin yeah, even moreso being a Yamaha, they're a little shorter and higher off the ground than the Hondas, but Honda was able th get a patent on the geometry and engine placement on theirs, even so, it does take some leaning on a honda as well, it took me a bit to get that right on my 185s

I have the Cheng Shin Mud Buster ( Now called Lumberjack) tires on my trike, with a Chevron pattern tread. They corner quite well for me, I can turn quite well at even very low speed, versus knobbies. I usually have to lean to turn even at low speed on knobbies.

Three Wheelers are the best ever , they should have never stoppe making them , its all because dumb people rode them and got hurt so they sued , its all bullshit. after the second year of quads being made there was more people killed on quads then all 17 years of three wheelers being made . all i know is all three wheelers and especially the Honda will be here forever .

I had one of these when I was little, a 225. I remember it could not idle in gear, once you popped first you had to accelerate. I doubt that is how it was supposed to operate, I just don't think my dad cared enough to get it fixed, ran like that until the motor seized and someone paid us 80 dollars to take it away. That went toward a Honda 250 Big Red.

My buddy got the ytm125 built for flat tracking. He kept the motor stock, but put some proper tires on it. Those little fuckers are wicked fast for a trike tho, and its got a mean 2 stage purple powerband. Takes off like a proper dirtbike when it hits the sweet spot in the rpm range.. im pretty surprised they sold it to the average consumers as a utility rig. It'll walk on any of my atc thumpers. Not quite as ballzy as an R of course but Im pretty sure it does a little over 55 at the top
