I will need to get my hands on a driving iron for a vid, but in general they are all iron diameter (either .370 or .355). In either case you will want to use a hybrid specific shaft or long iron shaft. They will almost always be .370 tip and require that you just sand down the tip a bit if using in a .355 hosel.

I didn't have the grip tape layers on that end and didn't have the ferrule or epoxy on the tip end. The adapter in the head gives you the same basic distance as a bonded hosel golf club. Usually around 1 1/2 to 2 inches for a driver and 1 to 1 1/2 inches for fairway woods. So a 3 wood with a 43 inch playing length would have a shaft that measures 41 1/2 to 42in.

The shafts themselves don't have any differences as raw shafts. 3 woods usually have been tip cut a little to make them a bit stiffer and support the heavier 3 wood head weight. They are also obviously shorter in final length. Putting a 3 wood shaft into a driver will likely make the shaft stiffer and shorter in overall length. 3 woods also often have heavier weight shafts though not always.

You would need to remove the butt weight before cutting and then reinstalling it. Other than that, you have it right. Just butt cut it and reinstall in 3 wood. Will play slightly more flexible fyi because of the heavier head weight of a 3 wood vs driver.

Love your content, AJ. do you have a video of you hitting the longer driver and 3-wood? I am trying to shaft a PW, i bought a head off of ebay to match my set of Hogan Apex Edge CFTs. I pulled a hogan #4 apex shaft out of an extra 8i i had and cut it down, but now the SW is so far off (too light). True temper says not to tip these shafts as they are tapered. So I'm so confused, how do mfgs get matching SW in a set if they are just butt-cutting the same shafts, something doesn't seem right.
@EFGMC3 жыл бұрын
Ideally, all the shafts would be the same weight in a taper tip set. That means the 8 shaft when cut down to PW will be a little light. Also the balance point may be slightly different, contributing to the weight issue. Simple fix is just use a shaft tip weight when assembling. Club companies will have the correct shaft weights in a set for assembly but even so, the head weights can be off some. They use tip weights also to get everything matched up.

How does the tip weight affect the seating depth of the shaft? Do you cut the thickness that the weight protrudes from the shaft tip? It seems it would have to have some effect on the seating depth given the thickness of weight. I would love to hear your thought as this has always drove my OCD crazy! Thank you.
@EFGMC2 жыл бұрын
I usually tip the extra 1/4 inch to replace the bore depth lost to the tip weight. Don't do it every time, as it will be player dependent. I think it's most important with an iron set where you may have some heads that need tip weights and some that don't. There I want to make sure everything has the same feel.

Some hybrids can be bent although it's a risky job. Obviously if you have adjustable hosel clubs you can change it. Just need to make sure that the starting hosel position is the most upright like a Ping for example. Player style heads are often flatter than game improvement ones also. Would also recommend checking your lie angle with a dry erase marker if you have not. Just because the toe sits up at address, doesn't guarantee it will at impact.

Hi guys I'm new to all this, dunno if I this is a dumb question. Is the shaft in a driver, 3 Wood and 5 wood all the same except the length? Ive heard people saying that they switched their driver shaft with a 3wood shaft and 3 Wood shaft with a 5 woof shaft to make them both shorter. I can see the logic in that. But it seems to be 2nd hand drivers are cheaper and would be easier to get hold of the shafts for so if they are all the same I'm thinking just get them and cut the shaft down, then sell the extra heads...
@EFGMC3 жыл бұрын
Any shaft can be used in any wood head. Difference is how much you cut off the tip in order to account for the added head weight of the higher lofted woods, and the final length which is from butt cutting the shaft. @EFGMC3 жыл бұрын
@@sfmgolf I have a video on the docket for this topic but the short answer is no. Not for amateurs, not for pros, not for anyone. What is important is having a shaft with good radial consistency (ie similar stiffness regardless of which plane it bends in). Spining a shaft is like driving a car with a flat tire where you just more that tire to a different axil. The tire is still flat and still a problem. If you have a "bad" shaft aligned via spine, FLO, or SST Pure, it's still a bad shaft.
