The shoes you wear are damaging your body (causing foot, back, ankle, and neck pain) by changing the way we walk.
In this video we explore what I've learnt over the past 3 years in barefoot shoes.
Are they the solution to a naturally stronger more pain free bodies? Let's find out.

I've been aware of vivobarefoot for a few years now and have always been interested but never convinced. I finally took the plunge after discovering your channel and its safe to say I am a convert! The barefoot ethos has reignited my passion for being out in the wilderness and on the trails. The shoes have given me back the sense of touch which is usually locked beneath an inch of rubber. No more rolled ankles, or feeling like bambi on ice over the loose stuff, I am now planted and feeling everything - that is why I will never go back to a normal pair of shoes for hikes. I'd like to say a huge thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts on barefoot life and I hope you manage to convince others to take the plunge 🤙

Simplifying my footwear has helped my 57 year old legs and feet progress towards walking without pain. Complex didn't work. The main factor in my pain was decades of desk work, worse than tight, cushiony shoes. I've switched to vivobarefoot shoes and boots, have changed my stride, and exercise daily. It's changing my life for the better. I feel in control.

For me I think the transition to barefoot shoes has been easier for me as I grew up on an island and ran barefoot everywhere. Now that I live in California for the last 6 years I wanted to go back to that feeling of being barefoot. My first barefoot shoes were the Vibram Five Fingers, and I wore them every day for years. It was an easy transition for me, but I did have to stretch my calves and Achilles a lot. I got questions about the shoes all the time. Some people thought it looked weird, but I didn’t mind. Haha. I loved those shoes. Walking never felt so good. Now I’ve been wearing mostly Xero shoes for many years. There is one more advantage to cushioned shoes, though: if you are walking on rocky terrain in barefoot shoes, it’s easy to step on a pointy rock accidentally, which is uncomfortable. So I’ll still occasionally wear regular boots for that.

I have always been comfortable being barefoot (real barefoot). Since some years, I train at the gym with a Fivefingers KSO EVO and I feel really good, so recently I got the Vivos Primus Trail II FG to use them as a daily shoe. It is being nice so now that is winter I ordered another pair of Vivos (Decon FG2). Just waiting to test them as a daily shoe too. I have to say that I also have a Merrell Vapor Glove 3 LTR for more "dressed" situations and a pair of Saguaros for daily use too. Although I still use normal shoes for Hiking or semirrigid boots for Alpinism (I live in the Pyrennes), aswell as my work boots (firefighting), Im trying to go barefoot in the majority of time. Great work with your channel, I will stay tuned for more videos ... Specially the one about the DIY barefoot shoes. Hugs!!

Great video! One of the first barefoot videos I’ve seen that also mentions the time and place for cushioned shoes, and that we need to stretch out our calves and Achilles if we’re to go barefoot Been looking into barefoot shoes as recently I’ve been suffering from Plantar Fasciitis and adding cushion to my shoes temporarily elevated the pain but didn’t cure it. Turns out I’ve been living the partial barefoot life as I go barefoot at home and at work (we’re not allowed shoes in our office) and I stand for hours at work so I’ve developed super tight calves which probably contributed to the heel pain. Hopefully the pain will be completely gone once I target those areas! Also I’ve got pretty spread out toes according to these vids which is cool lol

Are you saying barefoot shoes makes your achilles and calves more tighter?
@MarkLee-my8er
@MarkLee-my8er Жыл бұрын
@@topboi9392 no, your achilles and calves will initially be tighter because you don't use them as much when running in thick soled running shoes with a heel-toe drop. the tightness goes away once your muscles have adapted. It's like going to the gym and using weights for the first time, you'll be sore and tight as you won't have used those muscles before.

Great summary of the history and benefits of 'barefoot' shoes in addition to your personal experience. I made the transition about 7 years ago and will also never go back, I ended up selling all my 'normal' shoes on eBay because normal shoes are not foot shaped and feel very unnatural, which becomes very apparent after making the transition to natural footwear. I also took it a step further (pun intended) and enjoy hiking totally barefoot whenever I get the opportunity. My biggest barefoot achievement so far is to hike 25 miles continuously in the Yorkshire Dales barefoot and did it happily and without issue, and didn't have any significant soreness the next day either (took me a few years to develop the extra fat pads to walk long distance barefoot without pain but the foot strength and endurance came relatively quickly). Also agree about the calf muscle development, that's my experience too! P.S. for longer distance running I still need some cushion and really enjoy Topo shoes (founded by the guy you mentioned in the video Tony Post) which are wide, low drop and have varying amounts of cushion, I only use their most minimal shoes as the ones with lots of cushion have way too much toe spring, are inflexible, have arch support and so aren't that much different to conventional footwear except for having a nice wide toebox and low drop.
@TheBarefootStrengthProject
@TheBarefootStrengthProject Жыл бұрын
Hey Christian - that’s awesome, all of that is an achievement but 25 miles in barefoot shoes on the Yorkshire dales, that’s really impressive! What season did you do that in? @@TheBarefootStrengthProject hi, as I mentioned the 25 miles was *totally* barefoot, no footwear. It was early summer and a route I put together in the Grassington area where about 80% is dirt trail and grass so not much rock. The limiting factor is eventually the soles get too tender if there's a lot of sharp gravelly rock so had to make a more barefoot friendly route to get the 25 miles completed.

@@christianlangfield9303 haha apologies - I fumbled barefoot and without shoes 😂. 7am here in my defence. Very impressive, I’ve done some long ‘true’ barefoot work around the Lake District but as you mention, the soles definitely get tender on rock & gravel.
@christianlangfield9303
@christianlangfield9303 Жыл бұрын
@@TheBarefootStrengthProject yeah the Dales tends to be 'softer' underfoot than the Lakes for the most part, especially the main popular routes in the Lakes with all the small sharp rock they put down to prevent path erosion, that stuff is horrible for barefoot walking, even Vivo shoes.

They were first theorised back in '99 by the guys over at Vibram but they didn't come into production till the 2000's. Vivo is relatively new to the scene by comparison (although they are owned by 5th generation cobblers so they do have the jump there!). Another good barefoot shoes brand is “bearfoot” they make suede and canvas high tops and low tops they look like regular sneakers they also have slipper type shoes which I think are too expensive for what they are but I bought a pair of high top ursus and absolutely loved them they just came out with the bearfoot bruin boots and I bought those as I wanted my barefoot shoe wearing to continue into work as I’ve started hating regular shoes and only wear barefoot ones now the brand is super high quality they offer a lot of things to fix them aswell if they do break so yeah that’s another great brand

13 years in Vibram Five-finger. I use them for work, gym, hiking, etc. The only problem I experience is heal pain from standing too long on hard surface without an ortho-pad while working. I have a mobile dog grooming business. Because streets slope down at the curb, my work space also slopes. This make it impossible to stand properly.
@coryburns4309
@coryburns4309 Жыл бұрын
vibram 5 fingers are still the best. Despite individual toes being ugly... they allow your foot to simply act more like a foot, than any shoe that keeps your toes together, even barefoot shoes. Our toes are separated for a reason. I love barefoot shoes... for times where wearing the nerdy toe shoes just wont work. But most of the time... you should be wearing vibram 5 finger shoes.
@TheBarefootStrengthProject
@TheBarefootStrengthProject Жыл бұрын
I would disagree, the 5 fingers effectively put each individual toe in a brace and predetermine/limit it’s mobility. Wide toe box however the toes *should* be free floating within it so as the sole moulds to whatever surface you’re walking on, your toes can individually react without restriction of lateral motion. But I think we can agree, no matter what, both options are leagues better than any thick soled, highly cushioned alternative 😆

Nice video. I am considering the transition to Vivo as I have plantar fasciitis and want to have stronger feet and ankles ultimately and deep down I feel zero drop shoes will be the way to make the arch and foot stronger. But I’m worried about walking in these with my current issue. I’ve read that Altra are a good transition shoe as it’s zero drop but with some stack for cushioning. Did you have PF when you moved over to Vivos?
@TheBarefootStrengthProject
@TheBarefootStrengthProject Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I did, PF, osgood-schlatter and patella tendonitis none of which I suffer from today (which I attribute entirely to wearing barefoot shoes). The transition isn’t easy and altra would be a good first step to get you used to the zero drop and anatomical toe box aspect. But it will also be important to make the final step after that to barefoot shoes proper with time spent improving your total body mobility, strength and gait. I’m working on an accessible barefoot transition guide at the moment, keep your eyes peeled as I think it’ll help you a lot 🙌🏽

Definitely BUT as they’re my spring/autumn boot I didn’t bring them out to Indo so won’t be able to do it until I’m back in the UK ~ April. They’re awesome boots though, right up there with the tracker forest ESC. More fabric around the upper though so if you’re planning on stomping puddles they’re not the one, everything else though they’re send-it central. One of my old buddies used them to walk 100km in a day as a challenge.

Any recommendations for an all-around daily barefoot shoe, that can be worn in rain and wet/muddy conditions, and also offers some support for hiking? I know this is asking for a lot in one shoe, so the priorities are: 1) a shoe that can be worn in rain and mud, 2) a wide toebox and flexibility that allows you to feel the ground and build strength in the foot, 3) something you can wear daily in town/city, 4) a shoe that is functional for outdoors and hiking and some snow. Size is 45 EU wide. Any recommendations / advice would be much appreciated!

Interesting brief but 2 shoot to the top of mind depending if you wanted ankle boot or traditional low top. The ankle boot choice would be the Magna Forest ESC, really nice, versatile with a great aesthetic. Alternative to that would be the Primus Trail All Weathers as a low cut, multipurpose option 🙌🏽. Code GT10 would get you 10% off on either, let me know what you end up going with!

I mean, you could in theory run in any barefoot shoe on the road as the shape concept is the same, but the sport variants have better flexibility, durability for that type of activity and ventilation. I started with FiveFingers, got sick of them being $150+ and being full of holes in 6 months. Then found a brand of barefoot shoes that are super cheap. It's been 8-9 years since I stopped wearing "normal" shoes. I now can't even put a pair on without my feet screaming in pain. I always had wide feet and they are now wider. My toes spread. My arches are bigger. My whole body is more healthy because of barefoot shoes :-) The only issue with Barefoot shoes is that there are NO good waterproof ones and I live in the Pacific NW. I found a pair of semi decent canvas upper ones and just waterproof them. They are as flexible as the more athletic shoes by the same brand but.. still better then any padded shoes.

For a couple of 100milers, probably yes unless you've spent a long time and a lot of miles fully zero drop as it'll put less 'stretch' on your achilles and calf helping mitigate the risk of injury. Ideal would be some cushioning, small drop and wide toe box IMO!

@TheBarefootStrengthProject
@TheBarefootStrengthProject Жыл бұрын
When you say original, do you mean something like a vivobarefoot shoe or something more like an espadrille? The thin sole can make people more susceptible to cold during the transition while your body builds up more resistance and fat pads under your foot. You can bypass that with something like the thermal insole vivo sells without compromising on sole thickness or ground feel. For uncomfortable, can you go a level further in what you mean?

As the other commenter said, you’d manage if you were already in barefoot shoes a lot but if you’re brand new it could be painful as there’s zero cushioning at all. If it’s a few hours here and there then a shoe like the Primus Trail could work well for you (I’ve just posted a review video on that to my channel), but if it’s long days then Altra or Xero could produce better options for you (cushioned, zero drop, wide toe box). Re: grip on flat and wet, it should be fine unless it’s polished concrete but I’d start by considering the above points

@TheBarefootStrengthProject
@TheBarefootStrengthProject Жыл бұрын
Depends on the shoe OFC but I’d normally opt for a trail style barefoot shoe as the lugs would add some thickness to the sole, and then companies like VivoBarefoot produce incredibly good thermal insoles. In the comment section across videos on the channel there’s been people wearing them year around through Nordic winters, hiking up some serious mountains etc and I myself have used them through Canadian winter (-30) so definitely doable. Just get the right model (something like the tracker forest ESC). As for socks, pretty much always to keep the shoes smelling okay. Hiking socks in the hiking boots, thin ankle socks in these

Hey Islem, It's unlikely that wearing barefoot shoes will cause your feet to grow as the size and shape of your feet are determined by genetics, so wearing certain types of shoes will not alter the size of your feet. But, barefoot shoes, are designed to mimic the feel of walking barefoot and can help improve foot strength and mobility which may in turn change their shape. Mine 'grew' by a half size as the muscles and tendons under my feet became less tense allowing the foot to relax and expand it's natural shape. I hope that helps!
