Fertilizer it more make it bloom more ! For 3 years old this is a tiny tree . These are supposed to grow 10 feet each year for the first couple years of it's life.

Yeah I've just been hesitant to fertilize because there's all sorts of conflicting information online. Some sites recommend a 10-10-10 slow release fertilizer. Other sources say don't even fertilize Jacarandas and that fertilize will cause them to grow to fast, reduce blooming and have weak limbs. It's planted a heavily amended yard and rich soil. I can easily dig a foot down and the soil is black and sandy because it's a sand+compost blend mixed with the native clay. I did use some fish emulsion a few weeks ago. I might add more in another week or two.

Yes you need to fertilize the tree. Leaves are yellow, and is indeed small for 3yrs.

@@frenesimyers1895 I'll fertilize it after it flowers. It's close to 8ft tall now and grew about 2.5ft after i planted it last year. It's also colder here and we're in it's marginal growing zone where it would have had die back from the cold this last winter if I hadn't provide cold protection with both a frost cover frame and artificial warmth. I wasn't ever expecting it to grow as fast or tall as they do in southern CA or Mexico simply because of our climate being much colder.

@@frenesimyers1895 I'm now experimenting using sand, peat moss and perlite as a potting soil over the bagged miracle stuff sold in box stores. Those bagged potting soil mixes might have been the best to use and the new mix I'm using will allow for better watering, draining and fertilizing. If they grow 3-4 feet the first year then it was the soil mix and lack of fertilizer that kept this one small but if those other seedlings are also slow growers and only grow to a 10-16 inches after year one then it's just our climate being too cool for them to grow fast.

Mine didn't bloom this year but it is almost 2.5m tall. We only have warm weather from mid April through October. Last winter we had probably 60 nights of frost and 0c or below nights and a lot of cold rain which is probably why it didn't bloom this year.

I have bought Jacaranda last year (July 2023). It was 3 feet tall then and grew well making it about 10ft before winters (December 2023) then stopped growing due to cold (+4°C - +11°C). It also shed all of its compound leaves. Now It has started sprouting new leaves in spring (Feb 2024). I am not giving it any fertilizer. Desperately waiting for its flowering. How many years I have to wait?
@segapena5033

It depends on whether that tree was grown from seed or from a cutting. If it was grown from seed it will take at least 8 years to flower. If it was grown from a cutting it can grow after 2 years. My tree was grown from a cutting in late 2019 and flowered in May 2022. It didn't flower in 2023.

@@segapena5033 I don't exactly know but I assume it is propagated through layering probably. The seller told me it will produce flowers after 2 years. 1 year gone, waiting for another.

According to AccuWeather you guys have already had lows down to 18 and 20. If your winter lows can get that cold I would plant it near a larger evergreen that still allows it to get 8hrs of sun or near a building. One of avocado trees I planted last spring and didn't protect at all this winter and it had zero cold damage because it's surrounded by every a 7ft fence to the north side and evergreens that allow filtered sunlight but also protect it from frost and cold winds. Our coldest temps only get down to 26 or 27 maybe 5-6 times a year so I have mine in the open. I would also protect it the first 1-2 yrs with a frost blanket and an artificial heat source like incandescent Christmas lights. This is to prevent any mass die back during a cold snap and not let the tree grow shrubby because of cold damage stunting it while young. I also built an 8ft frame in 2022-23 and covered the tree with incandescent Christmas lights and the frame with two 10x12 frost blankets. This past winter I only put lights on it but didn't cover it at all. Next winter I probably won't use any lights at all unless there is some unusual cold snap expected to bring temps into the mid 20 or lower. Other than cold protection the most important thing is drainage and sunlight. The more sun the better. If you have slow draining clay or just heavy clay plant it in a slightly higher mount and dig the hole really wide. Good luck.

@segapena5033
@segapena5033 4 ай бұрын
Yes. They thrive in areas of California with clay soil like southern California. I have a seed grown one in heavy clay in my back yard. It's not doing anywhere as well as this one but it's also competing with turf grass and large valley trees that shade it in the morning. This one I planted in heavily amended clay soil and it gets 10+ hours of direct sun most of the except for winter it does well.

@@pauls8620 they do drop their leaves this time of the year. At one one foot tall it wouldn't have branches yet and would look like a stick when the leaves fall. As long as you didn't plant it too deep it should be okay. Mine was about 2ft tall when I got it in 2020 but I kept it in a pot for two years before planting it outside. @@gotravel2736 if you're in a zone colder than 10 provide cold/frost protection in the winter, don't over water especially if you're growing it in a pot. If you have clay soil plant it higher than the ground or slight mound. I had it potted for two years before planting it in ground last year and it did well with no frost damage this past winter even though we had a really cold and long winter. If you're growing it in a pot overwinter it inside when it starts to get into the colder than mid 30s. I put mine outside in the sun during the day and bring them into the garage or house at night in the winter. And if you're in a really bad heatwave and it's potted, keep it well watered and move it into the shade during the hottest time of the day. I have another one that got stunted and almost died when I left it out in the sun when it was like 110 during a heatwave. Three other jacarandas I had in pots that summer died from the heat.

That entire yard where I planted it in was heavily amended and is really rich soil. I added probably two yards of compost and raised the soil level 3-4 inches. I don't think they can grow anywhere that fast here. Even though we're zone 9B we are a cold zone 9B. Florida is much warmer than Northern California where we have frost by mid November often through March. Our cooler climate limits its growth rate. I think Orlando's annual average temp alone is like 8-9 degrees higher than Sacramento. It's about 11ft tall now with a pretty thick trunk now compared to when it was a stick in this video.

@@segapena5033 I’m from WA I actually would of figured NorCal soil was way better than the crap sand we have here in Central FL. Apparently they don’t mind here. Though the state typically gets hit by a mild frost once a year and they die back … a lot. But then when it warms up they take back off like weeds. I love the jacarandas, only 1 of my 4 is just starting to flower for the first time. Hopefully yours come along.

@@ryandixon1102 We had 50+ nights of frost here last winter. Now we don't get deep freezes and I would say the average overnight low during our winter is about 33-34. It could be 40 for a week then we can have lows in 30 for three days then back lows back in the upper 30s then another night or two in the low 30s or even upper 20s. This cycle goes on all winter until late February. But we won't get anything crazy like 25 or less. The other thing is that I had this tree in a pot for two years. I got it in April 2020 and I never really fertilized because I had always read to never fertilize Jacarandas and they preferred poor soil. It was about 18-20 inches tall then i first it. I have two other Jacarandas started from seed in 2020. One is in a pot and probably still only about 4ft tall even though I fertilize it and have it in a 20 in pot. The other I planted in my backyard last November and barely grew maybe a foot this year. That planting area was also amended since that soil is heavier clay. I protect all my frost sensitive trees. Last year I built a and 8x4ft wood frame for this Jacaranda and tacked on two big frost blankets to cover the tree entirely and also used several strands of Christmas lights to keep it warm. This year I probably am not doing it because it's too big to cover now. It had one small limb get frost burn at the end but has had no real die back. I might still out a two strands of Christmas lights on it to provide some warmth for the sub32 degree nights we get but I'm just hoping it gets enough protection where it can grow as big as possible to get as hardy as possible for when I can't and won't need to protect it anymore. I also have royal poincianas with the same growth issue in pots. One in a pot is only two feet tall and I grew it from seed in 2020. One I grew from seed in 2021 was also stunted in a pot and only like 1ft tall earlier this year. But after planting it in the ground in May it took off and grew to 5ft in just 4 months.
