Great Lakes Arms is making a LLLong action(30-06, 270, 300 win) gas gun...24 inch barrel, under a grand.
@jamesstewart997010 күн бұрын
@@chrisferguson1911 believe I’d stay away from anything semiautomatic for calibers above 308 due to accuracy and repeatability concerns and even 308 and below they still have to have careful considerations about how the barrel and handguard attaches to the upper for really good consistency and accuracy.

This past deer season I used Hornady factory ELD-M ammo for the first time. Only reason I considered it was a buddy of mine got his first bull elk with his 300PRC and the 225 ELDM ammo. In fact, this is the first year I've killed anything with Hornady bullets. And I used quite a few. I shot a buck and doe within 30 minutes with a custom built 7PRC - 24" #5 Benchmark 8 twist barrel, Lone Peak Arms Razor Ti action, AG Composites stock, Trigger Tech Diamond trigger, Hawkins Hunter DBM. The buck was 245 yards and the doe was 70 yards. The 180 ELD-M performed like any hunting bullet I'v used. Passed through the doe's shoulders and one of the buck's shoulders. Both deer dropped. Thus, comparing the ELDM in this ONE experience to every bullet I've used, from Hornady ELDX (this year), Speer, Barnes TSX, TTSX, LRX, Nosler AB, btips, solid base, factory Federal power shock, Berger VLDs, Swift Scirocco IIs, I could not tell any difference in performance. I did buy a ton of new Speer Impact 190 grain bullets to try in my 300WSM. I may try them in one of my 30-06 rifles. If you don't mind sharing, who is your gunsmith? What does he charge to thread a muzzle? Thanks

I got the stainless steel 30-06 Remington 700 ADL and I took it out to 1000 yards and no problem on coyote hunting and I use a 4x12x40 Vortex diamondback tactical but I get it out and take it out long range!! But I used a 22 mag out to 400 yards before I got my 30-06 and seen it was a good deal out of the box

Understand that the original 06 was 150grain at 2700 fps. Research and development over the span of 2 world wars and several armed conflicts produced what you have. Just for a laugh 270 win started out with 130 grain at 3140 and then was detuned to 3060 and stayed there til now. With a 26 inch fast twist and 165 grain bullet it to becomes a magnum.

Cool video. I'm thinking about a long range rig also, but in a smaller caliber like .243

Depending on what you plan to hunt with it that may or may not be a good idea, farthest whitetail I’ve taken was with a 6mm creedmoor actually at 614yds. I was using 115gr Berger bullets and pushing them to 3000fps, at that distance they still had 1000ftlbs and were moving 1800fps, but the rifle also has a 24” 7.5 twist 6mm barrel in it. It got the job done but there was very little margin for error at that point.

Wow!... I have been loading my two 22" barreled howa 1500s with 225eld Ms at 2650 fps...... that's with multiple powders... I was getting 2725 just last week....I know what you mean.
@jamesstewart99706 ай бұрын
Be mindful of your stability factor if you are using a standard 10 twist barrel with bullets that heavy. That’s the reason I stopped at the 208gr at 2800fps because it would have a 1.5 or higher MSF even down near freezing temps and I would still have good stability and not sacrifice any BC.
@RobertSmith-xh4lx6 ай бұрын
@@jamesstewart9970 yes I wondered if it was possible.... Hornady says 1/10 twist.....I have been grouping in freezing, and Hot weather, getting 1/2 moa....I have taken it out to 500 yards and still got 3/4 moa...also the bc seemed to be right on. I'm hoping to take it out to 1000, and maybe mile here pretty soon....I need to get some 208s also...I figured I would get 2750 out of my 22" barrels, extrapolating the data from my 225.... The ballistics calculator shows it's a wash either way as far as trajectories concerned... The 208 being a little flatter to 1000... That's why I said Wow when I heard your 2810.
@jamesstewart99706 ай бұрын
Barrel length on this rifle is 26”, don’t know if 22” would get there.
@RobertSmith-xh4lx6 ай бұрын
@@jamesstewart9970 I believe it would do 2750 in my 22" if you look at the muzzle energy numbers...if you are getting 2810 from a 26" barrel, and you figure 20- 25fps gain per inch of barrel....that would be 2830-2850fps...just slightly higher than what you are getting.... I'm using RL-26 which is quite a bit slower burning than 4350...I would like to have a 26" or 28" barrel, I just love how short the 22 inch is, especially after adding a muzzle brake.

Yeah the history of the 30-06 is incredible,... I've never realized it's older than the Titanic.....its been a battle rifle, machine gun, and snipers cartridge...and it's more powerful than ever in 2024.

What reamer are you using? PTG has the Serengeti Germán Salazar Chamber Reamer. If you look up German Salazar (R.I.P.), which the reamer was kind of named after. I believe it has .080 freebore (good for heavies) and a 1 degree lead angle instead of a 3 degree. German wrote a lot of columns about the 30-06 if you can still find them, plus won lots of matches shooting it.
@jamesstewart99706 ай бұрын
The test gun was a factory remington 700 long range, no idea what reamer they used on it.
@Chumlee10006 ай бұрын
Probably SAAMI spec reamer. I thought maybe you said custom. Sorry for the confusion.

Problem lies with wt happens on 150yds and in with the match bullet!
@jamesstewart99706 ай бұрын
Not entirely, if something comes out that close in and you are expecting to take longer shots you can just go for the base of the neck and turn whatever it is off like a light switch without having to worry about excessive tissue damage. Or if you already know your maximum range will only be 150 or less you can certainly use another bullet all together, something like the Hornady sst would work well in that situation. People make this a lot more complicated than it really needs to be.

@@jamesstewart9970 I’ve used 168 Amax for years and took deer out to long ranges with them , too much damage to meat when it would get a pass through you could put ur arm through the deer when it wouldn’t pass through it would explode rite away like a bomb, if ur shooting whitetail under 200 lbs u probly ok but I highly recommend a stronger bullet if you hunting mule deer or elk
@jonah-n8l6 ай бұрын
How’s the recoil on that rifle? Ik that’s a heavy gun so it should be really mild, just wondering ?
@jamesstewart99706 ай бұрын
@@jonah-n8l with lighter bullets the impact velocity is even higher at short range which is what causes even greater destruction, heavy bullets like the 208 will bring velocity down to a more manageable speed even at short range over something in the 160gr range, it would likely be near or over 3000fps for a 160gr bullet. The weight of the bullet isn’t technically what makes one bullet more or less destructive over another.
@jamesstewart99706 ай бұрын
@@jonah-n8l it’s very close to a 300 win mag in performance and therefore recoil, the gun is about to gain 3 pounds however which will help in that area a good bit.
