My late father suggested the 30-06 Springfield to me a long time ago! He said.. if you can't kill it with the aught six.. you shouldn't be hunting it! All he ever carried was his Winchester model 70 chambered in it ❤

Blackie, my dad and I always have shot 30:06, because we thought, no matter what, even a small mom and pop store would have a couple boxes of some type on the shelf. Then the ammo shortage hit, could not find any 30:06 on the shelf. However, there were .308 everywhere. So, bought a Ruger American in .308. Wonderful rifle really. Now can find 30:06 again, so I switch between the '06 and .308 during deer season. No complaints for either rifle or cartridge.

@@JAEUFM the 308 Winchester is the best modern day cartridge! Basically the short version of the 30-06.. and I experienced the same during the shortage. However.. the only cartridge on the shelf in my neck of the woods during the height of the pandemic was the 350 legend. However.. once ammo started trickling back.. 308 was by far everywhere! It's a NATO standard cartridge.. so they didn't have to change production lines in order to pump them out so to speak. I don't own a 30-06 anymore.. but I have a 308.. 350 legend.. 358 Winchester.. 35 Whelen.. 357 mag rifle.. and my favorite 7mm-08

Thank you, Ron. It's refreshing to see some good points made for the old .30-06 cartridge. The .30-06, at 118 years old, is still in the top 10 best selling rifle/cartridge combinations, delivers good, all-around performance out to 300 yards, is capable of harvesting any game on the North American continent, ammunition is ubiquitous, has looong barrel life, and new powders can send a 150gr bullet at velocities of 3,000fps. The old ought-six may be a little long in the tooth, but it still has a formidable bite.

​@@rickyanke9407 Doesn't matter if you bought it out of spite, you still purchased the #1 do-it-all caliber out there. I have been shooting a 30-06 since 1970, first with my father's rifle (a Montgomery Wards Centurion) and then a Browning A-Bolt since the middle '80's. If you don't reload this is the Holy Grail of calibers! You can buy more variety of factory loads in the most out of the way places than any other caliber made. Everything from 110 varmint loads all the way up to 220 grain monolithic solids for dangerous game it's easy to find ammo for, and more importantly it's cheaper than most any other center-fire ammo out there. My only other advice from years of experience: I don't know how much you paid for your rifle or what brand but, spend at least as much or more on your scope. It doesn't matter if your rifle is renowned for shooting sub-MOA groups, if you can't see the best, you can't shoot up to the capability of that rifle; and there are many very good scopes out there in the $300-$500 range. Maybe you can shoot good with a bargain scope but I'll guarantee you'll shoot better with a better scope

30-06 owner here, and I want to direct non-owners away from the bad information arising feom nostalgia, given here. it is pointless to shoot less than 180’s out of it. 1:10 is not made for 110’s, 130’s, 150’s. Discard that idea entirely. If you intend to shoot 150 to 165, get a 308 and enjoy less recoil, more accuracy, just don’t listen to these chaps. If you will shoot long range 165, then maybe, maybe. Or get both, but for God’s sake, don’t use less than 180 grains in a 30 Cal rifle with a 1:10 twist, 165 …. Ok but still… If you’re looking ahead to battling rioters, invaders and communists from some forest or mountain hideout, Then forget everything I said and get a 30-06 and not a 308, and get used to the recoil, noise and heavier 180’s, because it will serve far better than 308.

Here in Canada the most popular rifle was the Remington pump with the detachable mag in 3006. This was the hunters moose rifle and is lethal with 180 grain bullets. It's easy to carry and and reliable at -40. which is something you can't say for a number of the rifles you showcased.

Here in Colorado, this is my go to. 150 grain Remington core-lokt for mule deer. 180 grain for elk. Freezer is always full. No need for fancy bullets and boutique cartridges. Remington sportsman 78. It’s a bare bones model 700 that is long out of production. Love the videos

thanks Ron for 30-06 week! I truly enjoyed the videos. I understand that a lot of folks shit on the 30-06 & don't believe in the old cartridges. That's ok but I know what, I'm teaching my youngsters to shoot & hunt with the old cartridges. Why? Because of the affordability & just because that's what been handed down for generations in my family. I'm sure all these new PRCs are more efficient and sell good to the young generation, but those of us that have been shooting with the old cartridges for generations, we simply just don't care about the new stuff because what we've been using has been working & don't feel the need to spend the extra $$$ on what the Internet says is the best. Keep up the good work Ron.

I thoroughly agree. The modern, high BC bullets with magnum cases are very efficient, but they only come into their own at extreme ranges for their type or extreme hunting ranges. 95% of hunters are not capable of hunting to those ranges and the older cartridges still work well enough, so why not use them.

Yes,you can, such as trigger pull or trigger upgrade and stock bedding or stock replacement and bedding and a limbsaver for barrel harmonics and those that reload their ammo. These are some of the smaller attributes that can increase accuracy in a large way, even the bullet. Find the one your rifle likes. I hope this helps out. Have good hunting.

Well, I inherited mine. Unfortunately all the "old" and actual old (AP) ammo is long gone, i don't think that I ever got to shoot any of the AP as far as I recall. I do wish there was a 20 rd mag and it was semiautomatic, not because I can't hit a target, but up here in a place of ice and snow you might set the rifle down at the wrong time to warm the hands and what not. I still remember taking a tree stand, more like a tree house, trying to teach a younger hunter a bit. My rifle was leaning by the window when a very amazing buck starting to cross the clearing, powerline type clearing. I'm going to say that was 1991, so memory isn't as clear, but it was no closer than 500 meters but perhaps 700+ . Full running, grab my rifle and he was almost half way when I spotted him through the scope. Missed, fired right when he jumped into some depression/gully for 2nd round, popped out where I wasn't quit expecting and basically wasted two more rounds out of frustrated excitement and he was gone. I hadn't shot 50 rounds through it in the 3 years since I inherited it, had moved north from the south and had then detoured through Ft. Sill before returning back north and not liking the cold. I must admit too that I was too close to my scope and got punched in the eye during this. All that aside, would've been my first deer and a great mount and a big freezer worth even after dividing up the total haul. Oh well, believe it was the next day or two that my dad's old school bus driver brought us sandwiches. Big slice of onion with this really different meat, I didn't expect to be told it was deer heart. That really wasn't so bad, just a surprise, and I'd eaten much stranger game or water creatures anyhow. Just not seasoned my way. That $500 would've been nice for a partial can of .30-06 right in early of the 2020/2021 ammo shortage. Until this year, .30-06 had been harder to find around here. Had gone to Arizona November of 2020, only thing that was in plenty was 30-30 and .30-06, but I didn't know how the regulations with flying were. Still have a bunch of .308, just no rifle for it after it was stolen. That's an entirely other aggravating situation, but because of the ammo shortage, I went out and bought an overpriced rifle in 7.62 x 39 just a season after had bought a different rifle without ammo enough for on the shelves and hadn't sighted in the iron sights or any optic yet. The 7.62x39 was very plentiful yet as Blinden hadn't banned Russian import ammo yet, and the rifle loves brass or steel. More old calibers, please. Well, maybe I'll look closer as to what's on this channel. Getting the itch for another rifle or a big sidearm and everything that goes with it. Been stuck between wanting a powerful modern "Black Rifle" all the way back to an old beautiful hunting rifle or even something pre-dating WW2 or WW1 and used in that capacity, refurbished a little though. So many firearms to want, don't need them all though.

My wife’s family went in together and bought a Stevens model 200 in 30/06 for me one year (years ago it was $189), it’s a Savage 110 in a cheaper stock. I’ve since added a Boyd’s hardwood stock, a leupold Vx freedom scope, and reworked the trigger. It shoots under .5 groups with 168 grain ammo at 100 yards.

I hunted with it all four years of high school and got a deer each year with it until it was traded off on a Weatherby Vanguard. I was considering a BAR and the Benelli equivalent, both in 30-06, until I saw Ron do a full segment on those two auto loaders - and not only were they choking on all 3 different types of ammo, they were as inaccurate as anything I'd ever seen on KZbin. Tight groups like that on a 300WM anything, let alone a semi-auto, is impressive. Do you have any advice or comments on Ron's experience with those two auto loaders? Is your dad's BAR a specific year? Like, was it made in Japan or the USA? Both of the leading auto loaders fouling every shot & cartridge eject like they did, seemed more than just coincidence. They were both out of the box, but that should mean they can keep a tight group @ 100yrds, right? I'm looking at the Sako S20 Hunter in 30-06, but if I can rely on a B.A.R. being super accurate, I'd rather get an auto loader than a bolt action. Ron's video was a real turn off for the semi-auto genre for me.

@@breakheartorchard4761 I'd like to see a follow up to Ron's video. I'm not sure why a BAR should be any less accurate than any bolt action with a barrel of the same length. I am pretty green on the subject, so I don't know if the action directly contributes to an instability during recoil/reload - but especially for the price, both the BAR & Benelli (at 30-06 anyway) really fell short in several ways. I'm in Canada, but I do see buying American as 'local', so I'm hoping the Browning - despite likely being made elsewhere - is found to be accurate & reliable with an adjustment for the ammo. If a rifle is advertised as one MOA @ 100yrds, just like Tikka, each rifle should be tested to be within that claim before it ships.

I obtained a 30-06 Ackley Improved from Lex Webernick on a Winchester pre-64 Model 70 action. I’m currently working on a load with the 190 gr Hornady CX. I’m getting 2850 fps at the muzzle with N560. At 5000 feet elevation that makes this load a 700 yd elk rifle. The old ‘06 isn’t far behind. I’d imagine that it could be a 550-600 yd elk rifle with the same setup. These are sweet cartridges.

If you're giving them away, I'll take the Browning BAR. I don't shoot at game farther than 250 to 300 yards, so it's accurate enough. In the bolt action, I'd take the new Winchester Model 70 with a 24 inch barrel. That Browning BLR, because it's a takedown, would be my third choice. The Howa 1500 have always been a 1 inch to 1.5 inch rifle out of the box would be my all around pick of that group.

Have many rifles in the WBY Vanguard aka 1500 action all have been good usually around 1 moa & priced right. 20yrs. Ago new price was about 400$ If I had to say something negative it would be that are a tad on the heavy side. In my opinion the WBY Vanguard or 1500 Howa is the best for the money ! This video affirmed this. Before the “ budget rifle” craze this was your Best Buy for a reliable hunting rifle and still is today !

I've owned a few rifles of 30.06 caliber. My favorite was an old Remington model 740 semi-auto with buckhorn type open sights. I was hunting thick forests where my shots would range from 10 yards to 75 yards. I did a lot of "sneaking and peeking" and most of my shots were at deer that I jumped and were running shots. That 740 was so well balanced that it just naturally came into my shoulder and I acquired the sights immediately. Swinging on a running deer just felt natural and when the sight reached the front of his chest the round went off and it was a perfect shot in the sweet spot! A quick follow up shot was always there, but was only needed a few times! If you find yourself in the backwoods of East Texas and find that your shells magically didn't get loaded in the truck with everything else, you can always find some at any little country store and usually in the same bullet size (150 grain Core Loks). Don't ask me how I know this! 😋

I would have liked to see a premium ammo like the Federal GMM 168gr used as an accuracy test. I think using the Remington 150gr FMJ didn't do any of the rifles any favours, but at the same time there are so many combinations and offerings that whittling them down to three test loads would be pretty difficult.

I feel like the Remington 150 is a fair cartridge for testing. Its been used as much or more than any other load in the 3006. It may not be accurized, but it showcases what the 3006 is going to be used for.

I have a Model 70 in '06, with a barrel tuner installed. The rifle is over 20 years old, and still shoots .6 MOA consistently. Lots of rifles shoot sub-MOA groups. The real benefit of the tuner, though, is that I can get tight groups with a wider range of loads. If I find one that the rifle "doesn't like", I can generally tune it in to a sub-MOA configuration.

I am loading a Speer 165 grain bullet, BC of .52, that i measured at 3015 fps average. I am using a rem 700, with a Shilen 25.5 inch match barrel, Timney trigger, and Boyd's light thumb-hole stock. The only problem is Finding the powders I like. I have had this gun from original since the early 80's and this is its 3rd barrel. I have given my kids all 30-06's in different rifles, such as Browning A-Bolts, Savage 110's, and Thomson Center. The TC and A-bolts are very accurate and they have taken elk with them already. I gave my 12 year grand daughters the same and the are older now and have no problem shooting and using them. If they decide on a larger caliber for dangerous game, they can go up to 338 win mag. My load is capable of taking elk to 750 yards, deer out to 1050. and I do practice out to 800 yards and shorter. Love the show but a budget rifle like the Browning a bolt or a Ruger Hawk-eye Hunter would have been nice to see in the mix.

Thought about the 6, 6.5, 7 08, 7, 270, 25 06, 308, Took over a year to decide, but eventually I decided 30 06. Sure its old but it is one of the most versatile cartridges ever made. Picked up a brand new Savage 110 in 30 06 2 years ago. Very happy with it, got my first white tail with it last November. Going for moose this fall.

Great video! I noticed many didn't shoot good groups. I have a Parker Hale Deluxe which when added a new scope and zeroed in through the bore, I shot through the exact same hole twice. After resetting my target and adding a second board behind it, I was able to see my shots continued to go through the same hole over and over again. I had a pre '64 mod. 70 I used from 12yrs old until I was 18, and that and a sako AV with a mannlicher stock are the 2 guns I once owned in .30-06, and they're the 2 I regret letting go of the most and would buy the Sako again in a heartbeat.

Great review guys! I've had a Remington 700, a Winchester 70, and a Browning X-Bolt. All are great bolt action hunters. But my best groups are with the X-Bolt. I can reliably cover 3 shot groups with a quarter and occasionally with a nickel. That's with just a sandbag and me holding the rifle. I'm guessing it would be better with a bench rest. All 3 are 30.06 as is my 1917 Eddystone. It's all original from WWI, but with the military sights my groups are closer to saucer sized. Lets just say peep sights aren't my thing. Buckhorn and bead or scope works at 100 yds.

Great wrap up for the .30-06 week ! My favorites : Bolt action- Winchester model 70 featherweight ( of course I own one and love it ) Semi automatic- Browning BAR ( I own one of these also in .308 win ) it’s a tack driver and I’ve never had any feeding or ejection problems , that surprises me that you had issues with that one ) Lever action- Browning BLR .. I’d like one in .358 Winchester And for the lightweight version, I like the Howa with the carbon stock, that’s a nice little mountain rifle , I’d like one in 7mm-08 Remington.

Awesome series. I have a lot.....13 to be exact...... of 30-06 rifles. Surprisingly my most accurate is a gen 1 savage axis that I pillar bedded in a boyds at one stock. My favorite is a 1960s model 700 bdl. But the most accurate rifle I own is a sig cross in 308. It's a do it all rifle for me in the lower 48 and I have a really hard time leaving the house without it. Consistent 1/2 moa with 130gr barnes ttsx ammo.

Ron, there are alot of comments regarding the Remington 760/7600. Your clearly gonna have to contact someone in Pennsylvania and have a used one shipped to your ffl. They also want you to put the timney kit in it. We expect the episode w the 22" 30-06 version to be out next month 👍

Great rundown on the various makes of rifles. The 30-06s for me. The one I should never have let go was a Remington 7600 pump carbine. I used 125gr ballistic tips. Best rifle for the woods my opinion. Howa is hard to beat. I like my Savage 110 and Winchester XPR. Both with right loads go under an inch. Thanks for the comparison, great video. Thanks

An interesting footnote on the military 30-06's was the M1941 Johnson rifle. I believe it saw some limited combat in the Pacific in WWII.

Ron, Thanks for a great week of 3006 performance. Hows the shoulder? Howa 1500 rifles were given a bad rap back in the 1990's . I bought my first one back then .It was a barreled action in 223 I put on a Ramlite wood grain synthetic stock. Its one of my most accurate rifles . Since then I have bought a 3006 and a 7mmMag all are great shooters.

I would Love to see you do a 308 show. My father a I have always used 308' s to hunt in Pennsylvania and Maine. My father had a model 99 feather weight lever action and I had a Sako 308 Finwolf lever action. Love to see if you can find them and show them. They killed many nice bucks over the year's. 30-06 = Better ammo prices, much wider availability, Perfectly functional under 500 yards. I like some of these new cartridges, but I can't say that I actually need them. And I can still hit thousand yard targets or more with it if I have to. If you'rejust plinking, they will still hit at a mile. Drop calculations are kind of fun at that distance though.

I liked the Winchester 1895 in 30-06, bucket list gun! I own a pair of M70’s in 7x57, the FN/SC ones, beautiful guns, and luckily, mine like both 140 and 175 grain rounds. The first one, I paid $800NIB but I paid $1450 for the second, ouch! However, the latest ones I’ve seen on GB are about $2K! As for me, make mine Winchester! Great comparison of 30-06’s. A great round that’s gonna be around while many others will fade away; I wouldn’t be surprised if the 30-06 isn’t still available at 200yrs of age!

Retired on low income, I can buy one rifle. 30-06 would work for coyotes, hogs, deer, and bear in the south. Also, this does it all rifle would be nice if it served as a tactical weapon as well, God forbid it is ever needed for it, still, there are some semi-automatics out there that could do it all. How about comparing tactical versions in 30-06? To me, the ones I saw on video are ugly compared to the beauties you show here, but looks aren't everything.

Excellent video! I love the .30-06 because of it's versatility and historical significance. I often buy guns due to their cartridge. I am now looking for a 30-06 rifle. It's extremely versatile especially if you handload. 30-06 can be loaded heavy with large enough bullets for the largest game in North America. It can also be loaded down for small game.

I have a browning mk3 in 308 and a family member with a 30-06 like in this test not tack drivers but I’ve seen many of deer and pigs bite the dust infront of dogs. They are just plain quick and smooth. (Don’t need to hear the comments about deer and dogs isn’t fair chase). Love your vids Ron this one was really good should answer a lot of peoples questions and purchase hesitants.

I have always wanted a lever action and I do like my 300 WSM even though it’s right handed and I am a left handed shooter. I've got a decision to make soon - going to get my first hunting rifle, and I'm looking at 30-06. I considered 308, 7mm, 6.5PRC and 300WM. My preferred cartridge was actually 6.5PRC, but if I'm going to get good, I'd rather not spend thrice as much on 6.5PRC ammo. Recoil of a 30-06 is about 21.5lbs. Recoil of a 6.5 PRC is about 17lbs. Recoil of a 7mm RemMag is about 23 lbs. Recoil of a 300 WM is about 30lbs. I initially wanted that BLR Lightweight '81 Takedown, but the wait list for those in Canada is basically a year. I then wanted a B.A.R., but the video Ron did with the BAR and the Benelli autoloaders turned me off on autoloaders - they were out of the box, but all they did was jam and miss, even with 3 different types of ammo. I then looked at Tikka, who seem to rule the bolt action class - but I heard on two different channels that the recoil on those was too strong. I'm prepared for recoil, otherwise why would I be looking at 30-06, but I'm referring to unnecessary recoil. So that brings me to the Sako S20 Hunter. It doesn't seem to do anything wrong. I haven't seen a single channel not sing its praises.

One of the most accurate rifles I have is my Dads old Remington model 721 in 30.06 made in 1958. The metal butt plate is a little uncomfortable if it's held loose but still a fantastic unit for sure.

I’m surprised there isn’t a Remington 700. I’m impressed with the group of the Howa. I would think that you should get a better group out of the Sako.

If you notice the rifles with the heavier Barrels have the tighter shot groups.

Another good video Ron! Not surprised about the Savage shooting well. They may not be the prettiest girl at the dance but I haven’t had one yet that wouldn’t shoot sub-MOA with at least one or two loads. My personal favorite is a Tikka T3x. With Nosler Trophy Grade ammo in 165AB it regularly gives me nice little clovers just over 1/2” @ 100 and still under 6” at 600. I have most calibers from .17 to .338, several rifles in .30 cal. For some reason I never had a ‘06 until I was around 50. Bought my Tikka and now with the 165 Accubonds it’s my go to rifle for everything from goats to elk for the last few years.

Ron, I enjoy your videos. I know you are a western man . There's 2 rifles you didn't have in your 30-06 round up week. The 740 and 760 (7400 and 7600) I understand you can't get representative firearms of all models. My father shot a Remington 760 carbine in 30-06 for years, until I gifted him a model 4 in 30-06. (A gift for helping me with schooling after high school) My 7600 carbine is a 1" rifle with 180s. These rifles have served us well for years. Most of my cousins and uncles still use the 06 in these firearms. With some tuning, these rifles can do 1" groups. Mine does 1" at 100 yards with 180s,( I gifted my father's 760 to one of my twin sons. His model 4 will go to his twin after I take a whitetail with it. Don't get me wrong, I love my ruger bolts. I have M77 in 25-06, .338 and .300.

I love my savage 116 weather warrior series. Black synthetic stock and stainless barrel. It’s my go to. But anymore I use my marlin 336 30-30. Have really taken a liking to the lever guns. So much so that the browning BLR with stainless barrel in 30-06 will be my next purchase. Savage and browning seem to take care of us south paws the best though.

Walked through a gunshow, spotted a Marlin bullseye…but on a bolt gun. Some cash down and I’ve got a Marlin MR7 in .30-06, love it but I baby it just a bit. It hunts out of cozy blinds. The Browning hells canyon speed of course in .30-06 goes out in the weather. Edit: best PCCs, but get broad with it! Marlin 1894s, Ruger PCCs, the ARs, there’s a lot of potential there. Deer hunt with a Ruger PCC 9mm? Believe it or not, I know a guy!

If you want a really good woods gun, the rarer Remington pump, 30-06 carbine, with a 19" barrel, is the kicker. Recoil will surprise you, due to the light weight, but man, is it quick handling! Just love it!!

Inherited a Remington 760, has a Weaver scope kept at 3x.... absolutely wonderful deer rifle ... totally agree that the recoil is surprisingly light for a light rifle and can carry it all day.

My favorite -06 is the 1952 Styer Mannlicher I inherited. 5+1, full length wood stock and a bolt that the action is so smooth that if your not careful it will slide right out of the gun. Side mounted scope is just tall enough to use the iron sights underneath.

I absolutely love my 3006, it's so versatile and my favorite of the shelf rifle is the Remington 700. After years of use I decided to rebuild and upgrade this rifle. I chose a Er shaw match grade 26" cylinder profile threades barrel in the white. I then bead blasted it and blued it. I then trued the action and lapped the lugs and fitted the new barrel once I lapped and polished the bore. I choose a bell and carlson tactical medalist stock to put it in. Had to open the barrel channel some to free float it. Put a wyatts bottom metal kit on it with detachable mags and topped it off with a nite force 20moa rail and a Athlon midas tac 6-24 ffp mil rad scope. It's my budget M24 build. I use a 3 port brake from midway thier stoner brake. It is now a 3006ai, fires 178gr Eld's @ 3033 FPS (300 win territory) and is absolutely surgically accurate. We shoot pop cans at 700 yds with it. It's claimed a turkey at tic over 500yds. Fun to shoot and the recoil is similar to a 243. But it's a battle ship its heavy for most people at 18 lbs. But im an old soldier packed a m60 for years so I don't mind it.
