Years ago I settled on the 30-30 for my primary big game hunting rifle. I have taken Mule Deer, Pronghorns, Elk and Moose with no problems. Most every shot was under 200 yards, and most every animal dropped within 20 feet or less from point of hit. Yes, I have used the '06, and it is a great cartridge. But for me it was overkill. Point is: Every shooter should settle on the gun and caliber that works best for that shooter. I found the pre-64 Model 94 works best for me. Sights are always perfectly lined up with my eye when shouldered. Back in High School I and other hunters armed with '06s and such were embarrassed completely on an Elk hunt by a young man armed with his grandfather's vintage 30-30 '94 rifle with the long octagon barrel. That was when I became interested in the 30-30. Brought home the old adage "Beware the man who owns only one gun! He probably knows how to use it"!

What type of projectiles did you use? The 30.30 because of the tube mag should use a rounded or flat point. I'm guessing the 30.06 was a spire point? That would make a difference. Granted, the cartridge for 30.06 is larger, but I'd like to see a fair comparison of two spire point bullets. Also, I'm pretty sure I saw the 30.30 projectile bounce away after hitting #15!

Vic does gaming But he's shooting point blank range. Have him back up say 50 or even 100 yards. That 30-30 is going to flop like a wet noodle, whereas the 30.06 would be far more devastating. 30-06 has far more knock-down power at 300 yards where a 30-30 would probably be eating dirt. Not enough to land on target; also want the knock-down/shock too.

That's called key-holing on the 30:06 bullet--It turned side way. Your aim didn't appear to be straight inline with the disks. This caused flexing disc to push the bullet more on one side which caused it the bullet to turn sideways. Another example is shooting through brush. Key-holing can also be caused by not enough spin on the bullet. Reload the same bullet (such as a sierra 150 game king) for both guns. One rifle shoots slower so the penetration test is a forgone conclusion with all things being equal. If your interested A good read is : HATCHER'S NOTE BOOK written by Julian Hatcher, a Major General studying ballistics. Fun reading!

The only reason a 30-30 gets a bad rap as a lightweight is because all the commercial ammo is loaded for tube fed lever guns. You need a round nosed bullet to keep primers from going off in the tube and a fairly light powder charge. If you used it in a bolt gun or single shot where you can max out what the case will take and use pointed bullets with higher BC, they would perform right up there with the big boys. I've shot them out of a Ruger #1 and a shotgun/rifle combo made in Europe.

CaliforniaGunNut caliber literally means the diameter of the bullet in inches same as mm
@philverhey73356 жыл бұрын
Both Millimetres and Calibre are the diameter of the bullet... Calibre is in inches, Millimetres is in Millimetres. .50 calibre is .50 of an inch in diameter, .223 is .223 of an inch in diameter. people mix up "Calibre" and "cartridge", saying "30-06 calibre" instead of ".30 calibre in the .30-06 cartridge" TRIVIA ... 30-06 is .30 calibre bullet in the 1906 adopted standard case... both M1 and M2 ball (US Army) was .30-06, the M2 came after the Army realised the M1 was too ballistically efficient, and the safety buffer zone beyond the backstops of the firing ranges weren't long enough to prevent a .30-06 M1 boat-tail from falling short of people miding their own business.. so instead of going through the huge expense of making heir ranges longer ... they made their .30-06 ball ammo shittier so it wouldn't fly as far. ... and if you put modern .30-06 ammunition into an M1 Garand, you'll wreck it ... because the M1 gas system is set up for M2 ball.... you'll need to take out the gas plug and put in an after market vent. .. in otherwords, there's a lot to know about ammunition, so it's good that you're asking.
@SomeGuy-vo7we6 жыл бұрын
Caliber is SAE, MM is metric. .50 cal means the bullet is half an inch in diameter. 9mm means the bullet is 9 millimeters in diameter. Some older cartridges were named by the bullet diameter & powder charge in the cartridge like the .45-70Govt. The bullet was 0.45 inch wide and was loaded with 70 grains of black powder. Another way cartridges are named is by bullet diameter and year of development. A prime example for this is the popular .30-06. The bullet is 0.30 inch wide and the cartridge was developed in 1906.
@powerdog2426 жыл бұрын
Caliber is simply the diameter of the barrel at its narrowest point. Exactly what unit is used to measure that distance doesn’t matter. It can be in inches or millimeters, and it will mean the same thing. For instance .30-06. The name means the cartridge contains a projectile sized to fit a barrel 30 hundredths of an inch in diameter at its smallest point(aka “.30 caliber”), and it was adopted in 1906. 30 hundredths of an inch, when converted into the metric system, converts to 7.62mm. And most European cartridges are named with a system that lists the projectile caliber and the length of the shell casing, both in millimeters. So America’s 30-06 gets named the 7.62x63 in Europe. Just whose system is getting used determines where each region’s favorite spots on the caliber scale. America, for instance, LOVES 30 caliber-it’s such a nice round number in their minds. Europeans, for their part, prefer their own calibers in their own “nice round numbers”-6.5mm, 7mm, 8mm and so on.

I got an 30-06 and love it, but that is one nice looking 30-30. The 30-06 is great for retaining energy and accuracy at short and long range but in the brush I'd take that 30-30. I don't have a 30-30 but after seeing that one I've got the itch for one. Notice the big holes in the plates shortly after entering the plates from the 30-30. That means it's expending all of its energy in the target and will knock the snot out deer within 150 to 200 yards in the hands of a good marksman. P.S. I had a 742 and could kick myself in the butt for selling it. Well, after thinking about it, I had a 94 also but not as nice as that one.
