Testing a cast bullet load in 30/30 Winchester. Load is an RCBS 30-180-SP cast bullet bullet and vintage Dupont IMR-4350 powder. Test rifle is a Savage 340. IMR-4350 is not a powder normally used to load 30/30 Winchester.

Nice to see the old girl out for a range day. I just found a Rem 788 bolt action 30-30 that I'll bring up to standard and use on my deer hunts. Bolt action 30-30s are great rifles

I would like to add a 788 in 30/30 to my collection but they are somewhat uncommon and when they do come up for sale are expensive.

@@314299 Took me 2 decades to find one in decent shape with a decent price. The 44 mag took me 3 decades to find one. This 30-30 is a handy deer rifle but there are just so few of them left in the wild.

Always good to see the old Sav. 340 rifles, had one in 22 Hornet back in the day that was very accurate. It was stolen or lost when I had it shipped back to the factory to fix an issue, and I was never able to replace it. Brings back some good memories of my early reloading and shooting days.

4350 kind of works in alot of calibers. I use it in 270, 3006, 303, 308,300 win mag, 6.5x55. However now days its expensive..along with most reloading supplies, but 4350..H1000, Varget 4831 etc...seems price is up higher. Mostly i used the IMR4350. but use H4350 occasionally. Gd vid.

I would like to have a good supply of IMR 4350 to use in the 300 Mag, but the price scared me off that plan.

@@314299 at 75 grains or there abouts..per round, a lb gets eaten up fast Like having a 1970s caddy with the big 500 V8, 10$ to start... 5 $ per gear change and probably couple hrs runtime on a sizeable gastank. In simpler words... ( powder pigs. )

@@314299 last 4350 i seen when was atlast gunshow was 84$/tax per lb along with 4831 and H1000. Not really cheap. But if you can conversely use across a few cals ...id rather buy 1 gd powder instead of 4 others to keep the rifles going

@@314299 yes! By the way, do you have acces to a rifle in the 6,5x55? It would be intresting to see you load up something with heavy for caliber bullets like 150gr+ :)

Great Video, The RCBS 30-180-SP shoot really nice, I have had a Savage 340 in the past and in 30-30 just like yours. It's a hunting rifle perfect for Field use and mine was better than average for accuracy, mine grouped within 1-1/2 inches @100 yards, I find that few people complain that own them. anyway, I enjoyed this experiment and it was a success showing that Cast Bullets, properly made, sized and lubed can rival any production jacketed bullet in many applications, I would not Hesitate taking a shot at game with that load rifle combination and I doubt that using a Jacketed bullet would enhance performance for a clean dispatch of the animal of Deer size game. (That's my two cents) Maybe a video using the same powder/bullet in the .308 Winchester may have good results. Peace dude - Dave

That's an interesting idea to use the same bullet and powder in the 308 Win, I might give that a try in my Rem 700.

I might have a cardboard one pound container of H4831 around here (or I might have already used it up). I think it was labeled as being "war surplus" and that "storage life is not guaranteed" .

I just looked up IMR. 4350 is still produced and all IMR powders are now "Made in Canada". I have a couple of cans similar to yours. 3031 and 4064. I remember my dad doing some reloading for a friend (and himself) in the late 70's. All .30-30 loads. I'm thinking that's when he got those. Nice video. Looks like you've got that load fairly dialed in.

Yeah the plant making most IMR powders is located in Valleyfield, Quebec (south of Montreal and north of the US/Canada border). The IMR powders get shipped in bulk to the USA for packaging and distribution. As for this load I would say it is a good one to go to if a "full power" load is called for.

Richard Lee was a big proponent of slow powders with cast bullets. Looks as if you’re getting great good results here. Duncan has a 340 in .30-30 for sale if you want another one.

If one wants higher velocities the slower powders seem to be the answer. I think I saw the rifle he has for sale listed on Gunpost, he certainly wants enough for it.

I have mini keg of DuPont 700x works just as good as the day it was made in March of 1970. I’m curious do you think sizing that RCBS to .310 would help tighten up the groups.
@314299
@314299 4 ай бұрын
I've got C300 powder, the Canadian branded version of 700X, from about the same time frame and it also works great. I think storage conditions matter more than age. As for sizing to .310" it would not make any difference as the bullets were .309" out of the mold, the sizing did really did no sizing to the bullets it just crimped the gas checks on and applied the lube to the bullet.

Apparently a fairly stout load... seems to be producing some decent recoil for 30/30.

Yes, it felt like shooting a full power load and holding on to the fore end was important. The fore end got away from me a couple times and that most likely opened up the groups somewhat.

No, I've not had any leading. In fact I dont recall ever having any leading in this rifle with any cast bullet or powder that I've tried. Apparently it is a forgiving barrel with lead bullets.
