Great information. I would add a pair of readers or a magnifying glass for people who need help reading so you can make sure you can read the dosing directions, and maybe a small flashlight in case you don’t have power. Alaska granny suggests having 2 bins. One for adults and one for children, just to make sure you don’t give a child an adult medicine.

Regarding the alcohol wipes. Those should never touch a wound. Alcohol damages the tissue. In a perfect world, you'd use those to clean the equipment, like the tweezers. To clean the wound or wound area you would use something like Povidone-iodine.

Hey Kris. Thanks for being so relevant all the time. Three points: (1) Benedril for allergic reactions in case of stings bites or poison ivy. (You may have covered that with the sleep aid, but you'll have to make sure it's diphenhydramine HCI). (2) Anti itch creme for the same.(3) The Rexall brand cloth bandages at Dollar General are sooo much better at staying on in adverse conditions. There's no comparison. Thanks again for all you do.

A cravat regarding Benedryl... my adult son got a rash on his leg, & everyone said "Benedryl" 2 days later, it's worse, & now he is taking Benedryl pills, too. 2 days later, he's in the hospital! Hospital gives him Benedryl. He gets worse, checks himself out, talks to his Doctor, gets checked into the other hospital his Dr can practice at... HE IS ALLERGIC TO BENEDRYL!!! 😢 That wasn't the cause of the rash, but just a real heads up, that rare people are allergic to it. If someone is using it, & their problem gets worse- STOP using it IMMEDIATLY. Ps, Thank God, he is OK now. Hydrocortisone cream from the dollar tree works great on itchy rashes, stings, & both human & canine 'hot spots'. Just be sure to get the straight Hydrocortisone, not the one that also has Lidocaine. Don't know about it's effect on dogs. (& I'm allergic to Lidocaine, so that will never be in my kit.) 😅

Hi Kris, a couple of comments one it was really smart to put the items in Ziplock bags to also protect them from getting wet or dirty due to something leaking. Keeping the original package though cutting or bending them down is so important not only for directions and dose but for the allergic and medication interactions as always great information. I just wanted to add to the reasons why it's such a great idea. Thank you so much for everything you do may God bless you.

I've got a stock of adult pull up incontinence underwear. May sound strange but if you have a large bleed you can use this with duct tape or hold it in place. Can get them for cheap at thrift stores. Also rolls or kerlix and abd pads. Leftover med supplies from home are clients or family members etc. May no longer be sterile but in a SHTF situation it'll beat a blank. Same for disposable bed pads will offer a semi "clean" area to do wound care if necessary.

I definitely use the Dollar Tree to stock up on this type of stuff. Just watch the amount of product in the package. Sometimes it is cheaper per ounce or measurement of size, to get at Walmart, for example. That said however, it is great for making a first aid kit for your vehicles, or a short term emergency, or you need an immediate stock on a budget. My oldest and his fiance are finally able to move out on their own, and we went to Dollar Tree to stock their beginning first aid kit, and kitchen dry pantry and spices. It is an underrated store. Also good to have for a short term emergency or power outage is their packs of wet wipes, can't find those for $1.25 anywhere else and they work just as well.

As a former health care person, I would recommend checking with your physician about adding: Benadryl (liquid) for allergic reaction and tagamet for allergy and stomach upset, and pepcid/famotidine for stomach issues. In addition to boxes organised in bulk, maybe make up a dozen ziplock bags with single use sets of gloves, band aids, burn cream, wipes and bandages. That means you won't bleed over all your kit if you are badly cut. You can store these in any accessible place, such as car trunk/ boot, glove locker, handbag, man bag, kitchen drawer, bedside nightstand, caravan, or boat.

I made an emergency kit for my son's business last March. I went to Dollar Tree and put together a nice sized first aid kit for a reasonable price. This video is very accurate because I purchased most of these same items in March. My only suggestion is this: I found different first aid items at two different Dollar Tree stores. So, if you do not find what you need at one Dollar Tree, just go to a nearby Dollar Tree, and they may have the item in stock. I also bought ten bottles (small) of vodka from a local liquor store (one dollar each bottle) for cleansing wounds (antiseptic), soothing rashes, and reducing stress (consumption). The full kit cost less than one hundred dollars.

I used to use ziplock bags (mainly as my most used first aid kits were for search and rescue) for the protection from water when out in all weathers. I now use a cheap food vacuum sealer and seal them in vacuum bags that I can make to size and then vacuum. this does both waterproof them and reduce the size for storage. You can make a small cut in the vacuum bag (not so that it breaks the seal) so that you can then rip the bag at that point but scissors or knife are better to open them.

Might not be found at a dollar store, but you might want to include burn cream, insect bite relief, moleskin for blisters and something for upset stomach like Pepto, Gravol or Antacid. While it definately wont be in a Dollar store, splurging for a tourniquet is always something to have in a kit. It's one of those things that you really hope you never need, but you will kick yourself if you need one and don't have one. They can be improvised, but in a panic situation, the brain always seems to shut down.

The Boy Scout and Girl Scout handbooks have an excellent chapter about first aid and what to use as a tourniquet. I put together a basic trama kit of the X-large gauze pads and the bandanna or two as a tourniquet or sling for a broken arm. Check out the first aid chapter if you have children in Scouting. Check out the neighborhood fire department on first aid classes.

Make sure it's a quality made TQ. The cheap ones (china) the handle will snap in two trying to apply pressure. Refuge Medical and North American Rescue both have good, made in USA quality TQ's. At a minimum, I'd have one in the car and one at home. One on you if you're doing anything remotely risky such as firewood with saws. I say minimum, because if you and the family are in a car accident, you really don't want to choose who gets saved.

I take the cardboard tube out of a roll of toilet paper so it will compress better. Not sure if you can do that with the wrap you tried to compress flat.

If you add a few cotton rounds to the sanitizer bag, it doubles as a fire starter.
