When I was five I taught myself all of the presidents. Calvin Coolidge was my favorite at the time because I was almost named Calvin.

Sadly for Mr. Coolidge, he lost one of his sons during his presidency, and spent the rest of his term in a pretty serious state of depression .

+skippy3860 I remember hearing that. I also heard that his son's death played a big part in him not running for a second term. Nevertheless, President Coolidge was one of the best presidents we ever had!

R.J. Villa He also said a president shouldn't serve for more than 2 terms. He felt that 6 years was enough for him.

I've read Coolidge's biography, he did anticipate a crash by the end of his term and was concerned that the government would worsen it by increased deficit spending on counterproductive welfare programs. He understood that debt was and still is the greatest long term threat to freedom. He is one of the few presidents that left the federal debt smaller than when he had inherited it. A great man of modesty. We could learn much from his example.

LOL I have seen you comment across like 5 vids now XD, in general not spending money is a good thing, it means it is there when you need it, its all about context on what it is spent on, not just spending it because it was there like the left seems to love.

Calvin Coolidge age 52 1923, previous president Hardings secretary. Dry, knowing wit, known for being quiet. William Howard Taft swore him in. Tight reign on budget, lowered taxes, wanted small government and pro business. Fan of factories. Had great depression during tenure.

Of course Smoot-Hawley, and Hoover "abandoning the free market to save it" had nothing to do with the depression. Not to mention the instability that came from FDR. The reason Coolidge is forgotten is because his record was sterling, and it disproves Keynesian economics. It's a reality that too many historians refuse to accept...
@anonymousanonymous7250
@anonymousanonymous7250 6 жыл бұрын
You really don't know Keynesian economic theory, do you? Keynesian economic theory states that in times of economic distress the federal government spends on public works projects and engages in tight control over investments to bounce back the economy. This does get the economy growing, but it also grows the power of the federal government. Once the economy is booming, you raise taxes to pay back the debt. Then you turn everything back over to the free market. Keynesian economics is meant to be temporary. A quick fix. If you halt it too short, it will not work. FDR had to cut it short with had prolonged the Great Depression. If you extend it longer than necessary, than it will come back to haunt you. That is actually why the Soviet Union collapsed.

I also love Presidents that veto raises for the working class while giving tax breaks for their rich friends. It makes it better when they don't acknowledge the pending doom and have no connection to the people who will suffer.

Calvin Coolidge was a great president who supported limiting government and in so never thought he was to big as a president like Obama did he understood that when the government controls life is bad when it limits itself life is good
