I was really amazed with this 30 day beard shaving results done with a straight razor or in my case a Shavette. I thought the Rockwell 6C and the merkur futur we're going to be the stand out winners in shaving off 30 days of full beard growth. It is not easy for any razor but I did not plan on the straight razor / Shavette winning against all of my top safety razors. I did a shaving fail video just on this straight razor because it cut the hell out of my face as a beginner or noob. Look at me now a straight razor fanatic. When it comes to every day shaving, I still highly recommend any safety razors of my Top 3 safety Razor video. I still need to spend a lot more time with a shavette because i am not comfortable using it as a beginner for everyday shaving. Check one out below

When I first started wetshaving when I was 16 I used a shavette(the yellow razor you used) the best advice I can give you is to stretch the skin your going to shave with the hand your not shaving with, the chance of nicks/cuts is greatly reduced when the surface your shaving is as flat as possible When shaving the neck look straight up and pull down at the bottom of the neck to stretch the skin, you’ll get a closer shave that way also with a shavette/straight razor

@@OhioShaves no problem, I know it’s a bit tedious learning to shave with a shavette first because of having to use 2 hands, it can also make the shave last longer then it should, especially if your in a hurry for work or an occasion etc. once your used to it and have mastered the technique you’ll be able to do it without stretching the skin with your other hand, you’ll be able to angle your face in certain ways to achieve the best shave with no nicks/cuts or irritation, I know some people who shave daily with a straight or shavette and they can do a full 2 or 3 pass BBS shave in under 10 minutes(including pre and post shave routines), and they’ve been doing that for years Mastering a straight razor is the hardest shaving skill to learn, it gives a good sense of gratification and achievement once you’ve done it, great videos too by the way 👍😊

When I shaved my last beard off I had a barber cut it down to a stubble and then he gave me a straight razor shave. Did a good job, too, even though he said he rarely did shaves. After that began my years long quest to figure out how to shave properly. Went from electric razors to multi blade cartridges to settling on DE razors.

That's a lot of growth to remove. In my case, when I shaved a 2-month beard, I used a Philips Norelco all-in-one trimmer to remove the bulk of my beard. I finished with a regular 3-pass shave using a DE safety razor. As an aside, I've found that my Rockwell 6S can easily handle 4 days of growth using the R5/R6 plate for the with-the-growth pass, switching to the R4 plate for across the growth, and finishing with the R2 plate against the growth. In your case, I'm impressed that you used a shavette with such heavy growth. I don't like a lot of blade feel and would definitely not shave with a straight razor. Kudos on your "raw" shave...despite the blood bath from the Thorn.

I watched the entire video and read some of the comments. I know this video was done 10 months ago. I hope you have had a chance to practice regularly with a straight razor because really, you did very well with the shavette. It is a kind of art to shave with a straight and to know when and how to strop the straight razor and otherwise keep it in tip top shape. You really did well to get only a few nicks. It was good for me to study your use of the shavette, because you succeeded very well with it.

Hi! I use Feather blades exclusively and have never corked them. If I have a beard like that...and I've had a few of those in recent months...I would go to a barber with instructions to trim the beard down enough so that I can shave the rest of it off. The barbers generally double to quadruple check to verify that I really want my beard clipped off, then they go ahead and trim it off with electric clippers. I rather like being pampered by the barber at a particular high end barbershop that I favor. After the barber trims off the beard, my face is pretty irritated from the clippers. It gets more irritated when I shave right after. But the clipper treatment followed by the shave is a lot better than my trying to shave off my own thick beard with a razor. I have only seen the first 11 minutes of this video. I want to acknowledge your courage. You have great fortitude and determination to shave off your own beard. I salute you. 🙂

@@OhioShaves It just seems like a cut waiting to happen unless your technique is 110% spot on. That can happen with a safety razor (ahem, Thorn) but as the name implies it's inherently safer with the advantages of a razor blade shave. Thank you for experimenting on our behalf.

Nice shave. RazoRock's Hawk V3 open comb single edge razor can work quite efficiently and comfortably using Feather's most aggressive Super Professional Artist Club blade. This blade is normally used in Feather shavettes and kamisori razors and (if used with light pressure) more comfortably plows through beard growth than Feather Hi-Stainless DE blades, which, in the wrong razor, seems to painfully tear through long beard growth. I don't find a single razor (even an adjustable) can effectively do all shaving passes efficiently and comfortably, so also use Classic Shaving Occam's Razor single edge adjustable razor at highest setting (with much skin stretching) for XTG passes and an iKon Tech with a Feather Hi-Stainless DE blade (one of the most aggressive DE razors, used with the lightest touch) for ATG passes. Maggard's MR18 long knurled handle is a wonderful addition, as holding it at various points (bottom, middle, top) provide more control than smaller handles. Unfortunately, it can't be used with the Occam's Razor. Slant razors, as you know, also work well given they stiffen the blade, but I find their effectiveness works up to a point. Of course, some of my shaving issues may be due to myself not using these products as effectively as others. Best wishes for more effective shaves.

This was glorious to watch. Watching a razor take down that much growth is always fun to watch. One question, where was the R41 for this? Do you still have it? I feel like it would've held up better because of the OC and larger blade gap. Less clogging issues maybe?

Also, with the thorn razor, I’ve never used it myself but from the looks of it the angle the blade sits in the head seems to be what makes it more aggressive, the blade gap isn’t that much bigger then the twig so I think the main factor is the blade angle/exposure Maybe try change the angle you put the razor on your face and you won’t get as much irritation or cuts, another example of this is the Rex Envoy razor, the blade gap is very small but it’s a very blade forward razor so the angle the blade sits is what makes it a razor that’s on the more aggressive end of the spectrum, if you get the angle wrong it will cut you

I just recently started wet shaving my head. Just used a Gillette fusion to get a feel for it. I ordered the Henson al13 mild yesterday along with a blade sampler pack and alum block. I can’t wait to try this thing out. I’m also rocking a beard and haven’t shaved my neck with a blade in years (irritation, after burn, etc.). I’m definitely going to try my neck with the AL13 and see how it does for me. Great review!

When I need to chop down my beard, I use a clipper or a trimmer, and mow down the beard, before I use a DE Safety Razor. If you want an aggressive razor, get an iKon Tek, load it with a feather 🪶 or Kai blade. I've never had a more aggressive razor than an iKon Tek. You can make it even MORE aggressive, by putting a shim or spacer in it. I'm not a fan of straight razors. Maybe it's because I've watched too much Sweeney Todd or the Barber 💈 of Seville to ever feel comfortable using a straight razor. I'm a fan of the Vikings Blade Godfather, Vulcan TTO, of a Parker 78R loaded up with a Bic Chromium Platinum, Bic Astor, or a feather. I hope you got well soon and that Twig didn't leave a mark!

interesting video... only thing is when you use the shavette , u are suppose to hold your skin taut, the hand pulling the skin firm to make your hair stick up is what ive seen and been told. and i just used it that way the other day and it worked. less chance of nicks and irritation the more taut and flat you can make the skin. also kudos for you for using a feather blade in a shavette as your first shave ... using whats considered the sharpest DE blade for your first try is brave lol. it's considered very aggressive and irritation prone on a shavette i use astra and wilkerson blades lol and im still new , i usually use clippers but i lately decided im going to use razors for a few months and see if i can transition.. good video thanks

I got to be honest David, that was hard to watch. A couple of things I noticed, I would have trimmed my deer down with electric Clippers first, then used either the straight, or the Rockwell for the first pass. There are better shavettes that are much more forgiving. I would recommend a feather artist club SS with a feather proguard blade. I would use the Rockwell for the second and third passes. Keep in mind the easiest place to cut yourself with a chevette is around your mouth and Chin. Don't be afraid to use the shave that on your cheeks and neck and a double edge around your mouth area. Last little tip, always dry your alum block, it makes it last a heck of a lot longer. All in all you got her done, didn't have to call the paramedics, and you got to use a straight razor. That's a good day.

Shavettes scare a lot of people away from straights. Lightweight is not your friend with straights. Too sharp is also not your friend with straights. The whole shavette concept forces you to use muscles to move an ultra sharp blade. It’s a bad plan. As a straight razor shaver for nearly 20 years, I’ve never been so nervous for someone watching a KZbin video. For better results, try a nice heavy traditional straight with a semi hollow grind. Let the weight of the razor do the work. Use 2 hands, one to pull the skin taught. Takes a bit to learn the angles and how to see them in the mirror. The results are worth it. A one pass shave gets me by for 3-4 days and takes about 5 minutes. I have a goatee so a lot of the hard parts get skipped.

Can you explain the different between mild, medium, aggressive razors? For example, the Henson has the mild one and then you can get the titanium one in Mild or aggressive. What’s the difference? Also, I recently canceled my dollar shave club crappy razor subscription and am looking to switch over to a SE or DE razor. Never shaved with that style. Any recommendations? Also, don’t mind spending $300+ on a nice razor. Thanks man. Subbed.

Henson mild is my favorite from them if you’re going to make the switch. The mild is still very aggressive, compared to a disposable razors from the dollar shave club.
@don4476
@don4476 9 ай бұрын
Mild, medium and aggressive in context of a razor refers to what's called blade geometry which is the blade gap and blade angle. Blade gap is the space between the safety bar and the blade. Small space is mild. Big space is aggressive. Blade angle is the angle, in relation to the razor's head and safety bar that the razor clamps the blade down to. Each razor has a geometry designed into it. When someone loves a razor it's because the razor's geometry suits them. A mild blade is less sharp. An aggressive blade is more sharp. Mild and agressive are used to describe both razors and blades. I like a sharp, agressive blade, a feather, in a mild razor like a 6c plate 3 or Rex Envoy. For me a mild razor with agressive blade is the best. The mild razor protects you (gives you safety) and the agressive blade cuts cleanly with less irritation than a mild blade. It's counter intuitive, but an agressive blade can give you a smoother shave than a mild blade.
