Getting rid of “things” is freedom. It frees up room for relationships, de clutters emotions and your spirit. We sold our house, sold and gave away everything that didn’t fit in our one bedroom apartment. In the next four months before starting the PCT we will be selling and giving away everything else that doesn’t fit in two suitcases and a box of keepsakes. Freedom is possible.

I start back volunteering at my local thrift store (charity shop) on January 6 and I remember people bring in a lot of their extra things the first couple of weeks in January. So thanks for your donations! And I'll also admit I can't help but buy things and have collected a ridiculous amount of amateur paintings for my wall. Terrible stuff, really, but they were done with such heart.

I like this approach. Minimizing "things" so you can focus on what's important in your life. It implies minimizing consumption so it's a good thing for the planet too. OTOH some of the organizing gurus seem to focus on decluttering in a stand alone fashion but don't address the impulse to over-buy that gives rise to much of that clutter.

Another great video Mary! First, I love how your hair changes during the month.. ;-) Second, I lived on a small boat for almost 13 years so I had to be a minimalist of sorts just to keep the boat afloat. One trick I did was any time I got a new shirt or pants I would get rid of one. Same thing in the galley with pots and pans or other kitchen utensils. I live in a house now and clutter has taken over so its time to clear things out. Thanks for the videos!

Not to be “that” person 😂 but I just wanted to give you a tip, there’s alternatives to coconut oil that are better in my opinion - coconut oil is rather comedogenic (it tends to clog your pores) and because it’s a fat in lower temperatures it can clog your drains when you use a lot of it in the shower. Personally I use rosehip seed oil for everything because it’s a “dry oil” (does not make you shiny), it smells nice and it’s rich in vitamin E.
@MarysOutdoorAdventures4 жыл бұрын
I've not used that one before and following your recommendation I have looked into it. It does look a great alternative! It sounds quite a similar oil to another one I use, raspberry seed. I use this in the daytime as its a natural sunscreen too!

I am about to start this challenge again having completed it last year. I find it difficult to get rid of things given to me by loved ones. Having grown up in post war Britain I am of the Waste not Want not and Make do and Mend generation. I try to put as few things in landfill as possible. Finally, when my Mum died last year I had to clear 200 years worth of family memorabilia from her house some of which would be of social history importance so have been kept for cataloguing. I have a huge mountain to climb. 🙄

Very interesting! Great to see many of your decisions were based upon a more "natural" change. Two questions: how do you dispose of all of the items? I am going to have the the Mrs. S view this as she is one who holds onto too many items. What recommendations do you have for someone to embrace an one hundred eighty degree change of mindset concerning possessions? I shouldn't have had Mrs. S watch your video because she likes and wants many of your discarded items. If you see a brunette lady going through your garbage containers you will know who it is. 😯
@MarysOutdoorAdventures4 жыл бұрын
That is so funny🤣🤣 I will watch out for her!! I donate everything that is suitable, sell the occasional high value item and recycle the rest. I would suggest starting small and with something easy to get into the swing of things such as a sock drawer or magazine rack. Then just small steps. I'd highly recommend looking into a few documentary's about why people live with less, the minimalists have a few good videos/podcasts etc.
@scottsteel23344 жыл бұрын
@@MarysOutdoorAdventures Thanks for the sock drawer tip. I think that will be worth more than a thousand words or a few videos especially if the sock drawer is placed in a random place such as the dining room table or living room couch. The reality of seeing an out of place sock drawer may trigger the spark to address it in a different mindset than just returning the drawer to its proper place.
