That’s how you can really learn everything, with a teacher who really see how you are. My mom is a kindergarten teacher and she said everyone has a different way to learn, so she needs to implement a lot of methods in order to keep every child attention

The fact he shows how frustrated he gets, how vulnerable he gets, and anxiety from facing his fears, makes the video much more authentic and relatable. It’s better than some KZbinr just effortlessly learning and chatting with strangers. He shows the struggles along the way.

It was sooo good and important for him to show that frustration and isolation he felt. Hopefully, people will grasp that this is how foreigners feel in Western countries. We should extend the same grace to them as well. Great video, however. Love how you go out of your way to connect with different types of people.ypu appear to be a kind soul. God bless you x

Your video made me cry. I'm mexican and I've just recently moved to Canada. Your video remembered me the things I miss so much from my country, how welcoming, fun and open to new experiences our people are. I am struggling to make TRUE conecctions here in Barrie other than with my housemates or work colleagues. Still, I know that it's an adaptation phase as of how different our cultures are. As you said, I think you’re trapped in comparisons as I am myself comparing the life I had in México and the one I have right now. What I'm trying to tell you or anyone that reads this, is that you are not alone no matter where you are. I hope you find joy in the small things life has for us and appreciate where our old self has brought us. PS: spanish is so difficult even us as natives fail at it. Keep going, you are doing great!

Actually if you've ever tried skateboarding, try grabbing a board and riding around a skatepark, I've run into a bunch of randoms from different country's at parks n hung out with them here n there, lent one dude my BMX for a couple months. I will say though, probably don't go getting too close to people until you've hung out with them in public situations a number of times.. The majority of people are fine and even the sketchy dudes are usually fine but I've also met kidnappers, convicts, hard drug users who are on edge, wife beaters, gang members, etc... It's an easy way to meet people if you're just waiting to skate the same thing and small talk happens or if you ask them how to do something specific but there are also a lot of sketchy mofos that skate or even just hang around parks, I would recommend keeping anyone who just hangs out at the park at arms length

Hi, I would like to help with a small error I saw. You said “your video remembered me the things”, but when something brings up a past memory, we use the word “reminded” “Your video reminded me of the things” Yo creo que en español no hay una diferencia con como alguien diría ese, solo usé el verbo recordar. Pero hay una diferencia con “a ti me recuerdas” y “me recuerdas”, y en inglés este es lo que está pasando. “You remind me” “you remember me” Me ojalá que tu entiendas mi español y por favor ayúdame si algo se falta 🙏

I went through all of this to learn Spanish, and years later MAYBE I can say I’m conversational. You actually did amazing for just 30 days. Really proud of you! Lmao, the futbol guy in the black shirt was hillarious. Some of the things he was telling you were: 1) When he first saw you, he told the others "Yeah, that's my cousin", and then called you to join them. 2)When he gave you the 2nd beer and you tried to cheers it he told u "No, this is for you dumbass" (Just to clarify, in Mexico we use rude humor/nicknames as a form of affection. I can assure you 100% he didnt mean to actually insult you) 3)When they kept giving you the mezcal he said "Its a good thing you live right across from here"

For non-Spanish speakers I´m not an expert translator but I'll do my best, the interactions are pretty funny, make sure to read this in a re-watch, don't ruin the first experience. 0:34 "See you later" "Have a good day" 1:05 "Walk until you reach the wall an then all the way in (to the left)" 1:14 "$48.00" 1:32 "Do you want it (the tea) hot or cold" (They didn't know if Brad wanted an iced tea or hot tea and ice water, I'm myself not sure haha) 5:03 "Do you need laundry right now?" 5:56 "Ok, don't interrupt me a lot 'cause we have a time limit here" 6:56 "To sweep" "To clean" 7:42 "Do you want (the gringa) with everything?" (the toppings) "Cilantro/coriander, onion and pineapple" "Or do you want it all separate so you can taste it?" 10:45 "So you are trying to speak spanish" "Don't you want to clean your tennis shoes?" "Yes, it can be done" 13:25 "Yes, we are done playing" "Yes, it is over" "The heads are this one, and the fatty over there" 13:46 "Come here" "Cousin" "This is my cousin" (lol) 14:00 "No, it's for you güey, for you" (Now this is interesting, "güey/wey" has a lot of connotations, the way that buddy is using it to refer to Brad is like a mix of "mate" and "dumb ass" in very friendly and banterish way, normally used with friends, that man embraced Brad immediatly) 14:05 "Here, have another one" "...a box..."(seems like someone was making a joke about give him an entire beer box) 14:16 "In a moment we start the dance" "You wear a penacho (ancient headress) and start fire juggling" (they were messing with him) "Dance" 14:54 "Good thing you live just crossing güey" (lol) (He keeps using swearwords like "cabrón" to refer to Brad in a way you use to refer to someone close) 16:33 "Cheers, (a toast) to the pleasure of having you here"

Mexican, and even better, Oaxacan people are some of the friendliest, nicest, most open and naive people you will find. If you had been trying learning another language from scratch in a different country, most probably your video would show people walking away, closed doors, or (as it happened to me in Germany) people ignoring you because "they don't understand your accent", but these communities are so welcoming and kind hearted... I can so relate to this! I moved from Canada to Mexico six years ago and am still learning Spanish! I’m an introvert with social anxiety so don’t even feel comfortable speaking with strangers in my native tongue. My biggest issue is understanding the Spanish that is said back to me - I can usually put a sentence together, but the reply is the challenge. But, I keep learning and recently things have started to click in my brain and I can understand a lot now! The people here are so kind and helpful and really appreciate my effort. I’m putting myself out there now and it’s been great.

As a white man who found himself indebted to a Spanish-speaking family through the power of my newly born daughter, this video was just beautiful to see. Just as your experience went with the men at the lunch after their game, I have never felt more quickly welcomed into any environment or group of people quicker than I did with my (ex now) in-laws. Also knowing little to no Spanish at the start of things, I strived to learn it as best as I could to hold lots of conversations and show them I was interested in connecting with the culture, and it was the best thing I have ever done. Now, even though I am separated from the family, my ability to hold decent conversations with any Spanish speaker anywhere in the world is such a great feeling. It’s like a whole new set of friends you can make that you couldn’t make before. I respect you for going all the way to Mexico on your own for this challenge and if it wasn’t for my busy life full of bills and taking care of mi hija todos las días as a single father, I would totally make my own trip to Mexico like this.

How hard it is to feel not like a stranger but like THE stranger in the middle of this unkown culture. The simple task of going out there and talking to locals requires such bravery despite whatever you think of it. You may feel discouraged but in reality doing this makes you stronger, more curious and adventurous than others ! You did great and once again inspired us to go out there and connect with people, now all I want to do is share a meal with new people, and that's what its all about ! Inspiring content as always brother. Language is one of the best ways to connect and this video is a great example of that. I live in Texas and I’m beginning my career as an elementary teacher this year. I’ve had it on my goal board to become fluent in Spanish for a very long time. Like you, I’ve only made it to the second level of Duolingo. Still, my students would light up when I would speak their home language to them. Some would even call me, “maestro!” Your reflections on the boundaries to language acquisition are spot on. It can be so intimidating and frustrating to use the language. However, we must conquer those fears. Look what happened when you did. Some of life’s greatest moments come from uncomfortable situations. Thank you for making this video and I hope the algorithm gives it the attention it deserves. - Matt

I don't comment very often on videos but I loved this. I did this same thing but lived in Argentina for a year. I'm from Arkansas and had only 2 months of Spanish classes during high-school to lean on. Right before your moment of frustration, I found myself shaking my head... as you quickly learned, you won't learn much from just reading in a book or watching a show. Yeah, those will help refine your language but you will never find your driving force, your passion, in a textbook. As you discovered, you will find your passion when you experience the people and the culture! Isn't it such a beautiful experience to just talk with people and see how much love and excitement exists in the world?? When you just went and talked to the shoe guy, that was when I got excited while watching this video. Not only does your video inspire others to hopefully do the same if they haven't, you have shown how a little effort goes a long way to making connections and breaking social walls. These people were in love with you just because you said hi with a smile in their language with some broken grammar... how amazing is that?

I learned Spanish working at a bank because I felt useless not being able to help nice people who worked hard for their money. I asked my (cute) Mexican coworker to teach me Spanish. It started with numbers and then I built up the confidence to say phrases. Eventually, I fell in love with my coworker and now the Mexican culture!!!

Wow! What an excellent job you did documenting the insane emotional rollercoaster we all go through learning a language when we want it so badly. By the way, I think everyone who really wants to learn has broken down and cried out of frustration at some point (multiple times for me). You got some of the best advice from your teacher in that moment. It's so worth it and so rewarding to be able to learn the language and create those easy connections from one of the most welcoming cultures on the planet here in Mexico. Good for you! I am so happy you overcame your fears and blasted through some major barriers pretty quickly that usually keep people trapped there for years. ¡Felicidades!

Such a great video from beginning to end because you showed the true road you traveled, the ups and downs and coming out on top at the end. Learning a language is not easy and 30 days is very unrealistic, we just see people on KZbin who speak multiple languages and languages just come easy to them and think that we should be able to learn that easy too but that’s not reality. Mexico is a beautiful country, I definitely miss visiting Mexico.

I love the way that you communicate, because you show how frustrating it could be. Kind of ironic, I started watching your videos for two reasons: 1. I'm defintely not that good making bonds with others but I do recognize that I need it, so I enjoy and feel courage to try te create new interactions every time I see others trying it as well. 2. I try not to give up when it comes to learn english, and so I watch your videos to listen to you and keep "practicing". I totally understand the frustration of trying something new and immediatly, without being aware, starting to compare to yourself with others, and I'm so proud of you because despite of that, you tried it as hard as you could. You did it pretty well!

I love how you became more confident speaking with others. You did so good when you just let go and started speaking it! My grandmother spoke Spanish and didn't teach my mom because of racism where she lived and her mouth being washed out with soap by her teachers for speaking it when she was a kid in Colorado. I've always struggled with feelings of inadequacy, but I think I would be like you if I could just let go and do it. Brad, you are such an amazing human. I hope you know that. Hi there Brad. Your conclusions are so right. As an example… I’m from a Portuguese speaking native country, but because of “Hollywood “ I was exposed to the SOUND of English since my teen ages but had no idea what was being said. When I was 20, I just and simply went to London to learn how to speak and write in English for a month. I was all alone, stayed in a hostel and had 3 hours of classes in the mornings from Monday to Friday. The truth is that I always wanted to go to England that’s all. Because I was so relaxed and free I ended up leaving UK with an “Advanced level certificate “ in English. In the next year I got a temporary job in US after filling a loooong(seriously like a book) application form and after selected, a 2 hours interview by phone. I was told I shouldn’t pause any part of my life relying on this program because it was a global thing and very little people were selected. When I received a “YES” and exchanged contract, documents, etc, I flew in and I got to the place I was going to work in, it came to me “ Ok, it became serious, pay attention to everything during the training “. What happened? My mind blocked. It seemed like I didn’t understand anything people were saying. I decided to relax, not take it too seriously and all of a sudden everything started flowing again. Keep studying and relax… You will get it in no time. Such a long text for such a little bit of encouragement. BUT I think it’s worthy… Every nice word counts. Good luck and stay positive!

One piece of advice that helped me a ton is not just listening to music but singing it outloud, growing up i was what you would consider a “no sabo” kid, my parents are from Chile and Guatemala but growing up in the u.s specifically in a majority white school, i was placed into ESL (English Second Language) when that happened they told my parents that it’d be best if i were to forget spanish because it could hold me back in school knowing two languages instead of just english, so since my parents already spoke a fair bit of english considering they had been in the us for over 10 years both of them, it was pretty easy to forget spanish, i never fully forgot it but my speaking ability rapidly disappeared and i went probably 8 years without speaking a lick of spanish, and once i got to about 12 is when i started to try to learn the language again, luckily for me i already understood most of it, it’s more so i needed to learn to speak it again and develop an accent, and something that helped me a ton since i didn’t have anybody to practice with at home (my parents do speak spanish but it’s just insanely awkward to ask your parents to switch to completely different languages with you after almost a decade of them never hearing you speak a word of spanish) i would listen to music and eventually once i memorized the songs i would just sing out loud, essentially practicing speaking, and luckily since my parents had played for me a lot of spanish music as a kid there’s a lot of music/artists i already knew, and to be honest i’d say the best way to learn a language from a country is to just go there and force yourself to do what this person did in this video, i’ve been to my parents home countries several times but usually for not much more than 2 weeks, hopefully i’d like once i turn 18 to go to their home countries and spend a few months to fully be able to become fluent in spanish

I just went and randomly tried talking to people. I was with like 10 family and friends and they would all crowd into the back of a toyota and I would instead jump in a Pulmonia and then I would just wonder off on my own and go talk to random people. It was awesome. Then everybody flew home to Idaho after 10 days and I changed my plane ticket to stay a few more days by myself. It was epic. And omgosh the food is was soooooooo friggin GOOD!

I’m halfway through the video and here’s a little bit of my personal anecdote of relation. I’m a white girl from southern Illinois/ Saint Louis area and I have been learning spanish for about 7 years now. Although i understood about 95% of everything in spanish in this video, the process feels like it’s never ending. I remember in high school not caring about learning the language and one day I woke up and had a spark of inspiration. I am now a level B2 which is pretty independent when it comes to speaking/reading/writing. I still struggle immensely. The part where he describes to not try to translate from spanish to english & vice versa held me back for years and I know that’s a widely held experience for language learners. All in all, keep trying and keep learning. It is a super long process and I am still no where near where I want to be con el idioma de español. I don’t think i would have half the courage to do what you did and take this giant chance. ps, i personally know natives from Oaxaca, there is a dialect there called “Chatino” which may have made it even harder for you to learn/understand while you were there. It’s a verrrry different form of spanish. Almost an entirely different language.

I feel like I have lost a lot of my tradition and for a few years was lacking my Spanish I forgot how to say a lot of things in Spanish. So know I talk more Spanglish which isn’t good but Im still trying and that’s all that counts. In all seriousness I thank you for everything you do in all your videos and I love your personality. Great video! Many thanks to the author of the channel for the recommendations! The problem with many people is that they want to take a "magic pill" or get "secret knowledge" and immediately have skills and abilities. However, the truth of life is that knowledge, skills, and abilities do not come by themselves. You can't learn a foreign language without doing anything, without wasting your time and effort, just like you can't learn to ride a bike lying on a comfy couch, listening to lectures and watching videos about "modern methods of learning" on a bike. To really learn something, you have to really practice every day. You're going to fall down while you're learning, and you're going to get bumps - that's normal! The ups and downs of learning are an integral part of our lives. Motivation from success and depression from failure will always be your study companions. However, every student has problems in his or her studies that he or she lacks the knowledge to solve. It can be: poor memorization of words; no progress in language learning; the student can speak, but does not understand speech by ear; misunderstanding of grammar; incorrect pronunciation, etc. Agree that a problem you don't know how to solve is very demotivating. In order to find the answer to our question we have to spend a lot of time to read videos, articles and books by polyglots. In today's world, we have to solve problems as quickly as possible. I don't have time to study and analyze a huge amount of information. My goal is to master the basic knowledge of a foreign language as quickly as possible and already start earning money effectively in the international arena. I settled on the practical guide by Yuriy Ivantsiv " Polyglot's Notes: practical tips for learning foreign language". This book is always in my bag. If I have a problem while learning a language, I quickly find the answer in this book. There are many different techniques and tips for learning a foreign language in Polyglot Notes. I have made my own individual schedule and plan for language learning. Now I know what I am going to study, how I am going to study, when I am going to study and what results I am going to achieve. No problem could stop me! With an effective language learning plan my professional skills are more and more in demand internationally every day. Friends, don't stop there! Everyone has talents that millions of people around the world need! Learn the language and make your ideas and dreams come true! Thanks to the author of the channel for the informative and useful video! Your videos motivate me.

I speak both English and Spanish but I am native Mexican (which is also my 1st lenguage). No one in my immediate family spoke english, and honestly I don’t really remember someone teaching me or me learning. I believe I probably learned it because I grew up on the Tijuana/San Diego border and I would only listen to music in English. My point is; I never realized how priviledged I am, yes I knew that speaking more than one language is bad-ass. But I never really saw the struggle to actually people go thru. I am currently learning 3 languages (Italian, French and Portuguese) and they come super easy once you know spanish. I really appreciate that you took the time and the challenges to learn a new language.
