Such a unique and incredibly versatile OHBH … only top player ever to have an effective open stance OHBH, even on the run! Not to mention his bunted BH (see passing shots vs Nadal) where he keeps his left hand on the handle as long as possible for extra stability, only releasing the left hand on the follow through for extra control and feel. Incredible … my guess is he used to have a double hander and this gave him the ability to experiment with different techniques, each useful in specific situations

AFAIK he started as two-handed BHer though during his work with Günther Bressnik I think, his former coach, they figured out that he had problems with balls that jumped higher than usual, which is rather common on clay. So they changed his style to a single-handed BH which allowed him to take balls earlier and therefore use some of the momentum that is still in the ball to his advantage

Check for WAWRINKA Backhand and you will understand -- them lack of variety in backhand he hits one or two kinds cross and down the line his background is powerful but he lacks variety look how Wawrinka hits backhand and you will understand All the best ( Wilander, Mc Enroe, Courrier, Djokovic , Nadal, Federer) acknowledge that Wawrinka is the best one hand backhand............ In addition to that i m stating regarding the Open Era no one has a backhand better than Wawrinka.
