...and he won several times, specially against Federer
@J.-M.
@J.-M. 3 күн бұрын
@@gianmarcoortu7764 "Several times" is an understatement. As the ATP website wrote in their recent farewell article (which labeled his H2H with the Big 3 "shocking"): "The only players with better records than Thiem against the Big Three are … the Big Three." He won 5 of his last 7 matches with Djokovic (and even the two he lost were very close), beat Rafa repeatedly on clay, and he dominated Roger in their H2H (even though, admittedly, it was mainly because it was in Roger's worst period with his bad knee when he was playing poorly, especially in 2016).

Some of his iconic rallies and shots from his earlier years are missing, like that forehand bomb against Djokovic at the ATP Finals (people were using it as an animated GIF for many years) or the rally at set point against Murray in 2015 Miami with that jumping backhand. But most importantly, it's so sad that it's over. Like another iconic animated GIF said: "I've never seen anything like Thiem in my life". He won't be repeated.

Down the line tennis wins in the modern game where most players are grooved cross court ball machines. Theim proved it to be a winning strategy time and again. I’ll miss his one hander down the line.

Great player, he could have easily won 2 more slams if it was not for that injury. Only next gen player who has lived up to the hype, unlike Citybus, Zverev, FAA

Not only injury, he was just fragile, and choked in big moments, he was lucky Novak got dq'd in U.S. Open, and Zverev choked from 2-0 up, or he'd be on 0 slams his whole life.

Biggest what if in tennis history
@J.-M.
@J.-M. 3 күн бұрын
Well, maybe one of the biggest, but there are so many famous big ifs in the history... What if Borg didn't retire so early, what if the Open Era started earlier, how many more calendar-year Grand Slams would Laver have... Those things could potentially change the GOAT debates.
@TraeBeneck
@TraeBeneck 2 күн бұрын
I'd say Delpo ("what if" injuries didn't hold him back his entire career) and Kyrgios ("what if" he actually tried) are bigger "what if"s

I have bo doubt that Thiem still has the ability to play top level tennis. To me he no longer has the mental desire to keep playing. Maybe we will see him make a come back.

He clearly said the reason is physical. The wrist still hurts 3 years after the injury when he tries to practice at full intensity, it doesn't allow him to play at maximum level anymore no matter how much he tries.

Imagine a random commenter on KZbin knowing better than Thiem himself about his situation; he had been battling to come back to the level he wanted to for almost 4 years but couldn't reach it. Thank you for the laugh.

Shame I’ll always support the one handers sad to see after his surgery and comeback just never had the pace off the ground strokes he had before that won him so much. Prob right decision to retire but can be proud of what he accomplished. Also to add that sliding open stance single hander is legendary idk how he did it
@Sergio_Gonzales6

Several matches and points shown here were in the time when Thiem allegedly couldn't really play his best tennis, cause of no feel in his wrist, especially in his forehand.... For example against Hurkazc, which he won, Tsitsipas exactly one year ago in Vienna, where he was unlucky to lose against the Greek in a nail-biting match, or in Kitzbühel, where he reached the final in 2023.And these are just a few examples of many great matches of him, after his comeback in 2022 until end of 23, where he reached 3 ATP Semifinals, one final, beat players like Cerundolo, Hurkazc, Dimitrov, Bautista Agut, Tommy Paul, Bublik who were all ranked between 11 and 30 + several other wins against top 50 players and great matches against top 10 players like Tsitsipas 3 times. His head was much more a problem, than his wrist! If he could have handled his mental issues much better, he still would have had a decent, even great Carrer as a contender in many tournaments and at least as a top 20 player

Prime Thiem had a win % of 74%. That's his best ever. Meanwhile Alcaraz is casually sitting around mid 80s for a few years now and Sinner is 90+ this year, both of them significantly younger than Thiem.
3 күн бұрын
@@alburaq3290 Thiem had tougher competition though. Still not saying he would beat Sinner and Alcaraz easily but would be on par

Thiem had a good head to head against Big 3 but he kept losing to random players. Even in his best years of 2019 - 2020 Thiem lost so many matches to Non Big 3 players. It's not about tougher competition. Thiem was a bit like Wawrinka, he showed up for big matches but lost randomly to a lot of players.

Australian Open 2020 was his best grand slam even better than Us open 2020. He defeated nadal in 3 consecutive sets. Then zverev. Just fell short against djokovic. And he had 2-1 sets lead in the final also..then covid happened and.one day in 2021 i guess in mallorca he jnjured his wrist.and he was never same again.
@pauljohnson6019
@pauljohnson6019 2 күн бұрын
Stop blaming covid! He was weak mentally against Djokovic, and lost in the finals, yes injuries happened later, but mentally he was a wreck, just like Federer after Wimbledon 2019, who never recovered.
