Since you tend to watch a lot of gruesome / unwatchable horror movies, I have a fun pallet cleanser for you that I never see mentioned anywhere. It's called "I Had a Bloody Good Time at House Harker" (2016). This is a low budget, comedy/horror movie. It's a fun, and surprisingly heartwarming, vampire hunter movie you might like. If you need a break from the intense horror 🧛🏻♀️ Love the channel. Thanks for sharing!

Come and See could definitely fit in there. It's not a horror film by any means but the realistic depiction of war crimes and the fact that you know that these things actually happened takes it to a new level of disturbing.

Here's one that made me fear for the future of humanity: "Mystery Skin", directed by Gregg Araki and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt. It's about the long-term effects that childhood se#$al abuse has on two boys. As they reach late adolescence, one of the boys is surviving by resorting to male prostitution. There is no let-up from the trauma and sad situations. While Gordon-Levitt is amazing as always, the movie is super depressing.

Lilja 4-Ever by Lucas Moodysson could've fit this list. It's an ultra-depressing drama about an abandoned teenage girl living in the former Soviet Union, pushed into prostitution and other humiliations. Emma, I was astounded and happy that you lead off with Compliance. First time I've had someone consider this a hard psychological drama that crawls under your skin. Strict work structures with no recourse between levels or to speak for the lower (and mostly younger) workers may not move this fast in going from level of abuse to another, but this movie still haunts me no matter how many years ago I saw it. It's an important film, more so than ever before in US, as political leanings interrupt life as we knew it and make the landscape worse.

Genuinely surprised that 'Inside' didn't make the list. Great choices otherwise. Plenty of films I hadn't previously heard of that I can't wait to see. Cheers.

Excellent list and a big thanks to the commenters! I've added quite a few to my list. This is my favorite genre if it can be called that. Essentials missing from that list would include : Hereditary, The Lodge, The house that jack built, Inside, Visitor Q, Braid, Coming Home in the dark, Speak No Evil, The Platform (? been a while but had it listed) Most of them instilling a profound sense of dread or least and heighten unease, visceral repulsion on a human level leaving a haunting/lasting effect.

I'm glad someone finally mentioned Calvaire/The Ordeal in a video about disturbing movies. It's the weirdest movie I've ever seen and one that actually made me feel so uncomfortable after watching it. I love it, it's one of my favourite movies of all time.

I saw Dumplings many years ago, by "accident" (I think it was shown on TV) and I´ve not been able to let go of it ever since. Truly disturbing, but what a good film! I also watched The Nightingale just last night. It was a good movie, but it kind of took me by surprise, since I expected something more along the line of The Babadook (same director). This was just so dark and horrifying.

I liked Speak No Evil as well. Usually prefer the more bleak & realistic dramatic horror films to the conventional genre horror. Inside. Martyrs. Trouble Every Day. Bastards. High Life. Raw. Titane. Them. Calvaire. Irreversible. The Wailing. Memories of Murder. The Chaser. The Host. Eyes Without a Face. Vanishing. The Celebration. Melancholia. The House That Jack Built. . . . . just to briefly list a few. I know most fans of this type of film are aware of these, but I'm always looking for that hidden gem or lesser known work so I'll once in awhile leave a comment that may potentially alert someone to a "new find" & I'll continue with this video to see about an addition to my unique favorites. Still haven't found a copy of The Daughter/la Hija and would love some more info on that, preferably without needing a vpn upgrade. Thanks, stay safe & optimistic within these bleak & unsettling cinematic waters. The Seasoning House. Twenty Nine Palms. Ex Drummer. Vinyan. The Lodge. Violation. Trauma. We Are The Flesh. .....may be lesser known films. Also glad to see 13 Tzameti mentioned here, one of my favorites.

Thank you. Your pick of films interests me very much. I have started watching disturbing movies, and it’s almost now as if I can’t go back! Let me ask one question: you picked an Aster short as one of your disturbing films. Please where do you rank Hereditary and Midsommar. I believe that it was actually the second film that got me into so much darkness as it is. Aster seems like such a nice young man. Where does he get these horrifying images that have so disturbed me. What about you? Really enjoying your content and sense of humor!!

OMG YOU MENTIONED BAD BOY BUBBY!!!!! I have been trying to get Darren Van Damme to talk about this one for years and years and he ignores me!!!!! You get massive BONUS POINTS for Dogville. I thought I was the only person in the world who actually saw that movie. It was so dark, and I have to admit I enjoyed the little bit of redemption at the end. You have a new subscriber.🎉 P.S. Never, ever ever gonna watch A Serbian Film. I don't need that kind of stuff stuck in my head forever. 😉

I don't know if it would be worthy of this list, but 1 I feel is never talked about nearly as much as the film deserves has to be Perfume The Story of a Murderer 2006. Unique story, beautifully shot, and what a finally. I've been meaning to read the book for years but haven't gotten around to it. Would love to hear your take if you've seen it Em.

Hidden Gems - Pasture 2020: don’t even read the synopsis. Go in completely blind. Black Bear 2020: may be labeled as a drama but it is dark and messes with your head. Audrey Plaza is phenomenal.

Watched pastures blind last night based on you’re recommendation. Overall the movie was a fun watch until about an hour in when I realised that nothing was going to change from my intial 5 minute assessment. I loved the colour scheme, and the acting but overall it lacked structure and a meaningful conclusion. 6/10 - thank you for the recommendation

An American Crime is the most disturbing movie I have ever seen. Years ago it was on TV and I got sucked in halfway through. What that little girl went through was so horrific, it made me feel physically sick, and I didn’t even know it was a true story at that time. The last act was so brutal that I couldn’t even finish the movie, and what I did see, I still can’t unsee.

My flatmate tells me she hates horror. But she loves psychological thrillers. She saw Don't Worry Darling last night and didn't think it was all that. What top 10 psychological thrillers that are NOT horrors (but border on) could I recommend her to convince her that perhaps she doesn't hate the horror genre after all? Note: She considers a horror film to be anything supernatural or slasher

seeing the vanishing on this list is so weird as a dutch person, almost every dutch person will remember the book its based on as "the shortest book on the reading list", most of us probs havent even taken the time to read it and have just skimmed some online summaries but its still kind of infamous to dutch people, not because of how disturbing it is, but simply because it reminds us of how horrendous our literature education is.
