This is a quick and easy project, that took me less than an hour to make. I used some scrap boards and offcuts. I usually never throw anything away. And if you are like many woodworkers you have a bunch of thin strips you didn't throw away either.
In this video I show you how, I take those scrap boards, and even some waste I had from a project mess up, and turned them into a beautiful cutting board. This would make a beautiful gift, and in fact, as soon as I posted pictures on my facebook page, I had a number of people ask for one.

Just a quick question and I may be answering my question in my question, but, to me it seems that 1.5 inches thick is a thick cutting board. I know you can by a prefab one from department store that would be about .5 to .75 inches. I know because I have some but would like to make my own. My question is being it's made your way (meaning at home not meaning James's way), does it need to be that thick or is it simply preference? Is there an advantage to having a thicker cutting board versus a thinner one? I'm thinking I would stick to about an inch thick. Thank you for a great video and tips and advice. On a different note, my favorite part of your videos isn't necessarily the woodworking part. I love seeing the family involvement. Your daughter and my daughters both love to photobomb any chance they get and that's awesome. Both of my girls like to be involved in what ever I do. We swapped out a door and tailgate on my truck and the my daughter wanted to do most of the work. My boys are the same way, it just takes a little more incentive to get them outside. LoL! So many kids these days could care less about what their parents do. Great example as a dad. Thank you. God bless, Joe

The build looks amazing... and I can’t tell you how much I appreciate the family building together with dad teaching along the way! Reminds me of how I used to shadow my dad (a now retired carpenter) day in and day out when he was in his workshop. Sparked my interest years ago as a kid, and at the same time, shared a special bonding moment for he and I. Major props to u!!!👍

This is an added bonus for the children as they acquire another education into something useful that they can make use use in later years & just like their parent share with their own & perpetuate an ancestor's fine skill & passion. Beautiful board, I actually made one yesterday and tried to put juice groves on it with a palm router and straight edge guide and disaster happened, the edge guide moved and almost did a grove right in the middle of the board. What's the difference between pre-drilling a hole for a screw and drilling a hole for a screw? Sorry - pet peeve. No woodworker on KZbin seems to drill holes. They only pre-drill them. Excellent videos - I'm a new subscriber.
@KingsFineWoodworking
@KingsFineWoodworking 7 жыл бұрын
Hi David! That’s a great argument! Looking at it one way, it is clearly impossible to pre-drill a hole. The very act of drilling in the first place concludes the action. You can’t pre-drill something. You either drill it or you don’t. Haha, you can’t drill before you drill… But, here is my two cents. The word pre-drill is a contraction of two words, ‘previously’, and ‘drilled’. So perhaps it means to ‘have previously drilled a hole’ for something. Maybe the ‘something’ is ‘the inserting of a screw?’ Ultimately meaning, ‘drilling holes prior to, or previously to screwing.’ So perhaps we can take the word pre-drill to be a contraction of an entire sentence like this; “The act of drilling a hole, previous or prior to inserting a screw.” Oxford English Dictionary defines pre-drill as: “To drill holes in a material before sale or use; to drill a hole beforehand” Anyway, I like the argument on both sides, and thanks for subscribing. ~James
@bunnywarren
@bunnywarren 7 жыл бұрын
What if you "pre-drill" with a small diameter bit through the entire depth from one side. You can then use a larger bit from the same side until just over half way and do the same form the other side, using the "pre-drilled" hole as a guide and avoid any tearout.
@creep_factor
@creep_factor 7 жыл бұрын
Good argument. How about if someone doesn't have a smaller bit and they drive a small nail in to create the pilot hole? Would that be considered "pre-drilling" since it was done prior to the actual hole drilling?

Also would like to know I have been wanting to do some harder projects and not sure of the skill level needed to accomplish it. Did you happen to take carpentry classes to do what what you do just curious as most my answers get back to me and said they learned as the went. I'm a full DIY guy and built fish tank stands, beds and a few other things and looking to do more but every time I turn around I need more tools for the project and have to learn how to use them 😂 thanks in advance.

Hi William! Thanks! I've never had a class. Shortly after I was married in 1985, my father in law started teaching me some woodworking. But really everything was just trial & error and learning as I went. In the early days it was slower, since there was no internet. These days it's great! With KZbin I can look up a technique or method I've never tried and get great pointers. It's never been a better time to be a DIY'er! Good luck & have fun! :-) ~James

I do have a question though every time I flatten the end grain cutting board and put back on the bench It whorps back to the side just flattened, I can only use the router to flatten the board this has happened several times now the timber is very dry and end grain so I thought I'd ask the professionals for "HELP" before I quit the project this Is the first attempt to make a cutting board. Can you offer any suggestions? Cheers D
@KingsFineWoodworking
@KingsFineWoodworking 6 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, a planer will not take out a cup or a warp. You will need to surface one side with a router or a jointer first. After that, you would plane the other side into parallel. The planer just squishes the cup out of the board, planes it flat, and when the board comes out, the cup reappears. You should check out my Facebook Community page. Lots of woodworkers on there, including me, would be happy to take time to help you with any problems you may have. facebook.com/groups/134828903893994/

Do you recommen using a stain/varnish on the board, after engraving, and then using the oil/beeswax mixture? My worry is if you use the board to cut on, won't the cuts eventually get to the stained layer and contaminate the food?
@janwears
@janwears 3 жыл бұрын
A bigger problem is that when the board gets wet, it will eventually fall apart. Wood glue is not waterproof indefinitely. To last it needs 3 cross holes with bolts to hold it together, the nuts can be countersunk and hidden under plugs. Look at an old fgashioned butchers chopping block to see how it is done.

nice board bot some things I noticed (don't want to be a smartass here but one thing have to be sad and other things are just my nit pickings ) 1 ) using a jointer or ANY power tool for that matter in jewelry especially loose bracelets is a terrible idea, asking for a prosthetic hand 2 ) applying mineral oil with towel is like trying to spray paint with a vacuum cleaner , highly counterproductive and wasteful .., 3 ) it is your design but putting the juice groove so close to the middle takes out sooo much effective cutting surface

very cool. question about the thin strips. Are they face grain? Are all your pieces face grain to face grain? I am confused about putting face grain to edge on cutting boards. is that ok over time? I know not to ever mix end grain with face or edge but I can't get a definitive answer on face to edge glue ups. both long grain so should be ok?? anyway your boards are beautiful and definitely going to try one.

Are there woods that wouldn’t be safe to use in a cutting board? I was surprised to see Wenge being used. I love the wood.
@KingsFineWoodworking
@KingsFineWoodworking 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave, there certainly could be some species that would be toxic to consume. But I’m not familiar with any that are. In truth almost nothing from the cutting board ends up in the food anyhow, but it’s good to be safe. The Wenge you asked about is a toxic species if the dust is inhaled. It can cause neurological damage. And splinters can cause infections if not removed. However once sanded it doesn’t really present a threat. And furthermore, the acids in stomach along with digestive enzymes are enough to prevent Wenge from becoming an issue. To be completely safe, you could do a google scholar research, and look for periodicals that have researched that. I found one from the NIH some time ago, although the number of species it covered was pretty limited.

Very Nice! Eventually I will have some scrap around to do things like this. Or just have to buy the stock to build one.

I’m just learning woodworking, and I’m wondering why at around 4:50 you guys used a joiner and not a planer to get the finish off the boards? Is it simply because you don’t have one? Edited: nvm, you do have a planer! Lol

What did you put on your miter saw for dust collection? And did it actually improve it?
@KingsFineWoodworking
@KingsFineWoodworking 7 жыл бұрын
I wrapped a piece of leather and taped it around the existing dust catcher to make it bigger. The improvement is very slight. Before I put the leather I actually had a piece of cardboard taped there that actually worked much better for some reason. From what I hear the Bosch miter saw has better than average dust collection, but it seems pretty mediocre to me.

Feet make it a one sided cutting board. I might consider using a core box bit to make finger grooves on the short sides, and spray it with water to raise the grain so it can be knocked down...

Hi Chris! I'm not sure what the weirdest thing I've ever made is, but some more unusual things might be a deck I made entirely of mahogany for a wealthy client, a computer tower case entirely of wood, and maybe even my bench vise, which is made of wood, but I use it a lot for metal work.

I love the video and the end result but two small things I find kinda disturbing. 1) Please mention that you should NOT use expensive knifes on a board like this. To help your blade maintain it's sharpness you should use an end grain cutting board 2) I guess most of your viewers do not own most your tools. Why not show on how to do it with basic tools instead just mentioning it? :)
