Speaking of which, if I could rank all of the renowned German/Prussian leaders in history, it would go something like this: 5th) Frederick William the Great Elector - managed to defeat the Swedes on the field at the Battle of Fehrbellin, destroying the myth of Swedish military invincibility. 4th) Erich von Manstein - single handedly saved the Wehrmacht with his great operational counteroffensives. His greatest success was certainly the 1943 Third battle of Kharkov which was instrumental in halting the Soviet advance. He was still able to conduct operations in 1943 with very limited resources of every kind. 3rd) Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck - held against the 300,000 Entente troops with just 14,000 soldiers (3,000 Germans and 11,000 Africans) for four years. He's considered the great grand father of special operations. 2nd) Moltke the Elder - Genius reformer, invented the Mission type command structure, reorganized with a more formal officer corps, conscription, and a doctrine supporting low level officer initiative. What won Prussia its wars above all else was logistics, trains and rapid mobilization are devastating in the hands of an expert like Moltke the Elder. 1st) Frederick the Great - in his time, the Prussian army wasn't actually great. It wasn't actually notable in terms of organization or competence of individual soldiers or officers. Its success derived entirely from Frederick's military genius, without him the army is no different than any other army in Europe. Just look at how Napoleon absolutely demolished Prussia even worse than Austria or Russia. Napoleon considered him a military genius and a bit of an idol.
