It's a good thing that the people around the hotel were attentive and kind enough to get their attention before they got too far away, especially that taxi driver getting the call, turning around, and telling Mikochi that there's always someone with bigger Pon!

The hotel usually does the calling for you, that way you can wait in the lobby until the taxi arrives. Keeping records is a separate thing, of course, but that isn't too surprising (esp if they have some sort of contract with the taxi company, those will be the records they use to pay the company)

I've been to some where the concierge calls and arranges your taxi while you checkout and informs you when it arrives as you sit in the waiting area

Japanese ryokan usually handle the arrangements of calling a cab for their guests, and with onsen resort towns, there’s only 2-ish companies in the area(bus services from the local train station might be available, but departures are easier to arrange by car). Most ryokan would tend to prioritize a specific company’s services for ease of cooperation for such cases anyway. But yeah, Japanese hospitality service in Ryokan tend to be the above and beyond sort.
