Yes, I know many "metal fans" think this sort of thing is "poser metal", but frankly I don't give a rip! I like it! Sticking mostly to the 80's and early 90's, here is a list of 30+ of my favorite pop/glam metal albums.

When i saw Metal Church a few years back, they asked the crowd to let them sit down for 10 minutes after their set and they would come hang out with everyone, and they did. Signed stuff for every single person that waited, and seemed happy to do it.

Back in the 80's we called it "commercial metal"...that being said, "pop" metal can be absolutely great because the hooks, song-writing and playing are often top notch. Some bands had many great songs...Ratt, Icon, Holy Soldier, Vow Wow, Loudness, Dokken, Guardian, Stryper, Rage of Angels, Frehley's Comet, LeMans, Tesla, XYZ, Angelica, Europe, The Brave, Killer Dwarfs, Shark Island, Whitecross, Vyper, Vinnie Vincent Invasion....I don't care for every song or lyric some of them did but admire all these and more for their great melodies, song-writing and playing abilities.
@nolifetilmetal1

Sounds like we have a lot in common. Yup, commercial metal, pop metal, glam metal. Have used all those descriptions too. Funny thing is, most of these bands sound nothing alike.

@@nolifetilmetal1 I'm glad you don't let anyone tell you that you can't like extreme metal, traditional metal, pop metal, hard rock, even pop music and other genres. A good song is a good song. I can play death metal for an hour and after I've had my fill of that, I can go right to something much lighter. And then alternate. I think having eclectic tastes makes the whole experience more enjoyable. Also I too got into many of the bands you mentioned from those early albums, and many times those remain the favorites.

You showed some awesome albums on this list. I think I added damn near everyone to my rotation (that I didn’t already have) after listening to them. I noticed that a lot people are very rigid when it comes to adding certain bands and albums to a particular genre/sub-genre, but your suggestions really encompassed a diverse range and they were spot on. Keep it up.

Love your show!! We think alike, metal wise! I love all your choices, especially Motley Crue, & WASP. Especially like your pick of Y&T; I saw them live in the very early 2000s, waited 25 years to finally see them, AND the classic line-up was still together and alive (Sadly, Leonard, Phil, & Joey all died, RIP); as a life long Philly guy, I LOVED hearing you mention WTSP & WMMR & Metal shop!!

Hi Scott!! this is a great video, the 80's hard rock is one of my favorite genre in the metal world. I almost know all the band you shown, they are all fun bands and played some killer music, great hooks and catchy chorus. Of course lately the style when over the board and was more about the image than the substance of the songs and music, but great memories and can't deny this type of music made a huge impact back in the day...... missed LA Guns by the way and i like the term "gritty rock"

Great list! I scrolled down thru the comments below and am trying to suggest some ones missed. Remember "Fastway"? Their first 3 albums are excellent. Follow-up band "Katmandu" featuring Dave King on vocals and a Krokus guitarist is very good. "Arcade" (s/t) was a great album too. Featured Stephen Pearcy (Ratt) and Fred Coury (Cinderella). "Southgang" Group Therapy is an amazing record. If you can get past the cheesy lyrics, "Kane Roberts" s/t album is incredible. His guitar tone is fantastic. Love his work on the 2 80's Alice Cooper records "Constrictor" and "Raise Your Fist and Yell".

Y&T - You mentioned Chris Tsangarides (pronounced Sanga-reed-eez, btw)... My old band recorded an album with him some years back, then he set up a label with Strawbs singer Dave Cousins and my album was the first to come out on it. Great guy, awesome producer and I used to sit listening to his stories for hours. Sadly, CT died a few years ago. Always nice to hear his name, though. Great vid - first time viewer.

Finally someone who doesnt like to use the term hair band . I cant stand when folks talk about how much they love these bands and use a term that i think was made up as an insult to them. Lead singer of the Cure had big hair but they werent tagged as a hair band. I think if you are a real fan of the music you should boycott using the terms hair bands or hair metal. If you use those terms that usually means all you know from the bands are the singles that MTV played. Im Like you when listening to metal /hard rock, if its good i will listen to it whether it be something like Slayer all the way to stuff like Kings x
@nolifetilmetal1
@nolifetilmetal1 4 жыл бұрын
I agree! I hate the term. Like I said in the video, Roger Daltrey had big, long hair, doesn't make The Who "hair metal." Robert Plant had long, curly hair, doesn't make Zeppelin "hair metal." It is a derogatory term that somehow got adopted by some fans, including guys like Dee Snider who did his hugely successful syndicated show "House of Hair". But seriously, the term was derogatory meaning that it was all looks over substance, which is nonsense, especially considering the crap that was coming out in the 1990's.

People don’t know how easy they have it now to listen to and find the music like this. I collected the music from this era for a long time. I used to have to look for it from sellers in Japan, because of the rise of grunge and boy bands in the 90’s. I already owned all but 2 of the records you showed on either cd or vinyl. 3 bands I would’ve added to my list off the top of my head would be Lillian Axe, The Scream, and Love/Hate. I have and love so many more of the bands from this era.

I think I told you that I saw them possibly a few times back when they were playing a club called Narcissus in Kenmore Square. The club used to have Heavy Metal Wednesdays. I never knew that Motley Crue was considered Glam Metal. Never even knew that there was a metal genre called Glam. I knew of Glam Rock from the seventies. But I thought that it kind of fizzled after the seventies was over. Would it be fair to say that Glam Metal was the same thing as Hair Metal. A term I truthfully never understood. They did only one album name Behind Enemy Lines, from 1989. Killer stuff, they sound like a Christian Queensryche circa 1984. The guitar player, George Ochoa played in Deliverance, very underrated . Great video

Yes, First Watch was produced by Oz Fox. The album took nearly a year to make from what I know due to them pushing the band to tighten their playing, honing their sound, etc. The good thing about that is we got a stellar record. The bad thing is the album came out in 1989 instead of 1988 when it might have made more of an impact. Oh I know Recon well. I've seen them live many times and shared the stage with them a few as well. Behind Enemy Lines was just released as a Gold Disc Edition which I will show in my new NoLifeTilMetal update. Thanks for the suggestion.

Scott Waters Cool man. Guardian was one of those bands that came out a little to late to get as much exposure as the bands that came before between 85-88. The guitar player Tony Palacios was outstanding on the record in my opinion. Mass Voices in the Night is great as well, very well produced polish sound, remind me of In God We Trust. I’m a huge Quennsryche fan ( classic period) and Recon is just as good as QR. George Ochoa, and specially vocalist Vett Roberts were outstanding on the album. I like Robert Rock in the band Joshua, their album Intense Defense from 88 is very underrated. Dennis Cameron very talented,

I actually didn't hear "First Watch" until maybe 4 years ago. I was floored! I couldn't believe how good it was. A few songs are a bit cheesy but the good ones totally crank. The guitars even have that elusive "brown sound" that EVH blew everyone away with on the first Van Halen album. It's a favorite for sure. Recon, same thing. Didn't hear the whole album until maybe five years ago. It's also a favorite. It bridges the gap between Queensryche and a crunchier U.S. power metal sound.

A very good list leaving out the big names what shows us many forgotten albums. Like Heavy Metal is the term Glam Metal an umbrella term for different styles including Glam Metal itself. The stupid term of Hair Metal i didnt hear before 2000. Glam Metal covers following styles: +) Glam Metal as such: Heavy Metal Music with glam outfit (precursors: Sweet, Kiss (Masked period), Judas Priest, ...): e.g.: Mötley Crüe-Too fast for love, WASP-Debut, Twisted Sister-You cant stop RocknRoll, Wrathchild UK-Stakk Attakk, Ratt-EP, Kiss-Animalize, Malice-Debut, Ozzy Osbourne-Bark At the moon,... +) Melodic Hard Rock (a more harder AOR)(precursors: AOR, Aldo Nova, Russ Ballard, Van Halen, Uriah Heep, Queen...): e.g.: Def Leppard-Pyromania, Dokken-Under Lock and key, House of Lords-Debut, Tesla-Debut,... There are also links between Melodic Hard Rock and Melodic Power Metal: Queensryche: Rage for Order or Empire In recent days the difference between Melodic Power Metal and Melodic Hard is very hard to make. Through production technics both styles are merged. The difference between Meldodic Hard Rock and Pop Metal is more obvious. Pop Metal is more Radio friendly. +) Sleaze Rock / Sleaze Metal (=harder Sleaze Rock) (precursors: Aerosmith, New York Dolls, Johnny Thunders, Hanoi Rocks, Girl, Alice Cooper, David Bowie, T.Rex, Mötley Crüe, Van Halen, AC/DC...) e.g.: Guns Roses-Appetite, LA Guns-Debut, Skid Row-Debut(Sleaze Rock), Slave to the grind (Sleaze Metal), Poison-Look, +) Southern Hard Rock (precursors: Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZTop, Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, CCR, Whitesnake, AC/DC... ): Circus of Power-Debut, Badlands-Debut, Asphalt Ballet-ST, Little Ceasar-ST, The Cult-Electric, The four Horsemen-Nobody said it was easy +) Pop Metal (similar to Melodic Hard Rock, dispite the vibes, which are more fun and party orientated): Def Leppard-Hysteria, Bon Jovi-Slippery when wet, Mötley Crüe-Girls, Ratt-Dancing Undercover, There are a lot of albums which cover many different styles of Glam Metal especially between Sleaze Rock, Southern Hard Rock, Pop Metal and Melodic Hard Rock like Shotgun Messiah-Second Coming or Bon Jovi-New Jersey...

I was traveling when you put this out so it took me a while to get to watch this. I'm surprised that i was at least aware of all bands in this video. This made me think what is the most important factor that places bands in to different categories. When you think of Twisted Sister, their first two albums don't fit the hair metal bracket.. So why weren't they just a metal band like Aerosmith for example. Were they first just a metal band in the press? Did they fall into hair metal because of their make up or because they achieved commercial success with Stay Hungry? (title track certainly doesn't fall into hair metal sound) How come bands like Kiss or Judas Priest weren't considered hair metal though both bands released hair metal records? (Crazy Nights/Turbo) Because they had already solid fame as metal bands before, so a side step couldn't move them anymore? Pasi
@nolifetilmetal1
@nolifetilmetal1 4 жыл бұрын
You are correct. The early Twisted Sister stuff was just heavy metal. It wasn't pop or glam or anything like that. I can understand why they fell into the "hair metal" circuit with I Wanna Rock and We're Not Gonna Take It as those songs were more like anthems and didn't have the same energy that songs from the previous albums had. I also think the commercial success made people think of them that way too, as you said.
