Great overview of a topic that is often reduced to ‘use the rule of thirds’. Seeing so many methods together like this reminds me what a mysterious an art photography is. Whilst you are ultimately moving some dials and pushing a button, the way it is all composed is the source of the magic. I run a photography club at my school and my students really need too be aware of this. Aware of it so that it informs how they compose through the viewfinder and experiment with different angles. The theory thereby becomes a source of art. I have to say that watching this was a really great use of 30 off minutes.

I always thought the rule of thirds grid meant that the object/person has to be in the center square. Not the intersection of the third. This changes things

Yes! You can definitely place the subject in the center square as there are really no "rules" with composition, only guidelines. But yes, Rule of Thirds primarily suggests placing the subject at one of the intersections or along the lines themselves. This creates a more balanced and aesthetic composition.

To me having 30 compositional rules is akin to a psychologist putting a name to a persons psyche. Any photo can be described as following one or more of these rules. It would be very difficult to avoid one of them. Instinctive knowledge of what constitutes an amazing image rather than a good one is what identifies the artist.

agreed! I think you can look at any photo and identify at least one of these composition techniques. The "rules" can be a starting point, but the artist's unique interpretation and intuition often lead to the most compelling and memorable images.
