Based on the historians approximations, the 300 spartans (with the help of the 1000 assorted greeks from different city states) killed roughly 20,000 men before their deaths so your estimation of 20 to 1 was a little off as it was about 18 to 1. Xerxes army was roughly 200,000 total. Also, Spartan Hoplites were HEAVILY armored. This is a stylized graphic novel take of the battle itself. Agoge (their training regimen) was an actual thing. To be in the Krypteia (the kings bodyguard) you must've passed your agoge training, with additional specialized training (the modern day equivalent being special forces training)

in real life they did stay in their lines that was the whole strength of their army was that they didnt break rank and run out there, they also picked a spot that was a ledge 2 foot up so that they could stab down and the persians would trip over each other pushed by the soldier behind them that couldnt see what was happening to the lines in front of them in that pinch point.

35:02 "May you live forever (with the shame of what you've done.)" Not just in Sparta, but anywhere. Leonidas rejected him for not being able to form up a shield, and then spent 80% of the movie slow-mo dancing like a sissy and letting a larger man give him a shoulder rub. Dude wanted to fight and die for honor and was told no, so he took matters into his own hands. He's the hero of most of Frank Miller's books. Just not this one.

Many of the most badass lines, “only spartan women give birth to real men”, “then we shall fight in the shade”, “come and take them” etc come from Ancient Greek historical documents describing the Spartans and this battle.

Fun-Fact #1: The line, "Then we will fight in the shade," is a real documented quote from Spartan soldier Dienekes who fought alongside the real King Leonidas at the Battle of Thermopylae. Fun-Fact #2: King Leonidas was actually 60 years old when he fought & died at Thermopylae.

This is essentially a stylized version of the battle of Thermopylae. They weren't almost naked, historically. They actually wore an ancient version of Kevlar; many layers of tightly woven cloth and thin bronze plates* (according to the historians who specialize in the period) And their training was insane; likely even more intense than the movie showed. Casualties during training were not unheard of.

Facts: 1. King Leonidas was around 60 years old when he fought this battle..!! Also today's military schools, teach his war tactics.. 🔥⚔ 2. Efialtis (Εφιάλτης) (The traitor who told Persians the secret passage), actually means "Nightmare" in Greek 3. The phrases below, were actually told by Spartans in that battle a) Get back with your shield, or on it. (᾿Ή τὰν ἢ ἐπὶ τᾶς) b) Then we will fight in the shade. (Εἰ ἀποκρυπτόντων τῶν Μήδων τὸν ἥλιον ὑπὸ σκιῇ ἔσοιτο πρὸς αὐτοὺς ἡ μάχη καὶ οὐκ ἐν ἡλίῳ)** c) Come and get them. (Μολὼν λαβέ) (Actual translation/meaning: "If you find the mental reserves, come and get them") P.S.: Spartans didn't wore full armor because it was heavy and would make them move slow in the battle.. Also their swords, spears and shields where made from various alloys that made them very superior against other armies.. **Dienekes, disciplined, modest, and laconic, at the age of forty, had declined every proposal for promotion and advancement. He remained at the rank of Enomotarch, commanding 32 or 36 men, because, as he said, "…I only know how to count up to thirty-six!" According to the laws of Lycurgus, he could have avoided participating in the campaign since he had no male children. However, he arranged for one of his slaves to claim she had given birth to his son, allowing him to take part. Besides, he was a dear friend of Leonidas, and they often dined together. Dienekes had studied fear and asserted, “If we drive it out of the flesh, where it is born, the mind will simply follow.” His fearlessness led him, along with the Olympic champion brothers Alpheus and Maron, the sons of Orsiphantus, on a daring nighttime raid to Xerxes' tent. They nearly assassinated him, but his generals Mardonius and Orontes moved him elsewhere in time. Dienekes ultimately fulfilled the meaning of his name: "the eternal," "the one who lasts forever," "the unstoppable," through his "excellence" on the third day of the battle. Herodotus describes the furious battle of the Lacedaemonians around the dead body of Leonidas until, after killing Xerxes’ two brothers, Abrocomes and Hyperanthes, they dragged the body towards their side, routing the enemy four times. When they were encircled by the traitor Ephialtes, they retreated to the hill at the entrance of the pass. “...At that very place, they made their final stand, using knives if they still had them, or their hands and teeth, while the barbarians covered them with arrows, not daring to approach them…” Thus, the tragic truth of the unstoppable warrior Dienekes’ statement was confirmed: “...If the Medes darken the sun, we will fight them in the shade and not in the sunlight...” The brave Greeks fought to the bitter end, “In the Shade.”

The reason he said he fought many times and dinally hooes to find aomeone able to give him a good death....Spartan army was comprised id companies that were joined by invitation only so one had to show skill, bravery strength and tenacity to be invited. Best companies had more chances to go front line deployment thus raising their chances to die in service to Sparta which was the only way to earn a gravestone and as such a claim to immortality after they pass away . And vererans like thus guy here were fughting the hardest to arill show they were worrhy to fe in frontlines as the years and age that they could still remain active were closing retiring age . For women that happened if they died during childbirth as they were birthing one more Spartan citizen.

The middle East had a problem with this movie due to the depictions of the war camp. 😂 FYI Spartans were trained for war. The other city-states used "National Guards" that trained for few day every month. In actuality Spartans wore bronze armor and chainmail. And yes, they stayed in formation during battle. Leonides was a great tactician, he had studied Xerxes, and set up formations to defeat each attack. The Persian army were mostly conscripts that used bamboo, and wicker armor.

The ending is so bad it makes the rest of the movie worthless. Most lists of worst movie endings have it in the top 10.

Frank Miller is definitely a legend. He got a bit too high off his own hype after the 90's. However Sin City is great and while he hasnt been as hands on his Daredevil & Batman work are definitely oresent in Nolan - Reeves work (even TAS a bit)
